Opening the Wednesday night show was Minneapolis-based Aaron Rice. The one-man electronic artist was originally a duo called Aaron and the Sea, or shortened to AATS. Assuming the two parted ways, but Rice decided to continue on without his music partner.
We’ve been seeing Rice around the city since 2013 and his style has always been lo-fi dark synth (or often described as “murderpop”).
Playing a brief 30-min set of older songs and newer songs (such as “Heartthrob Mob”, played early in the set). Rice mentioned that his solo debut album will have an album release show at the Turf Club on May 2nd. According to the listing on the venue’s website, Zoo Animal (aka Holly Hansen) will be co-headlining.
Starting the show with an intro music of background soundtrack of a travelling train and the sound of a conductor, it promises the audience a special journey with Hælos, featuring Dom Goldsmith, Arthur Delaney, Lotti Benardout and Daniel Vildosola. On this current 2019 tour, the band employed a new drummer called Matthew Mason, who joined the band after answering a social media advertisement. The Fine Line show was somewhat special, as Mason recently turned 22 years old the day or two before.
While the old songs were well-received, I personally thought their new singles, including the popping “End of World Party” was very good. It’s a good direction for their band, especially as it sounds like the Party show had a Big Audio Dynamite influence on it.
The show went on smoothly, until they hit a problem with “Ark”, when it was announced that something called “The 404” (probably a synth sound machine?) was broken. It’s not the first time that they had this issue, as Dom Goldsmith announced “R.I.P. 404” as the code they would use. Their travelling sound person Ryan quickly came on stage to fix the problem. By the time “Empty Skies” was played, the band had resurrected a working “404”.
Now that Hælos had a second album written (although not available for purchase just yet), the band filled out a nearly 90 minute set (including the one song encore). Unlike before, on their first Minneapolis appearance, the band had to play their entire album, and also throwing in a cover song, just to play a 45-min set on their sold-out 7th Street Entry show. Compared to their first appearance, their second time sounded much fuller, especially since they added two additional band members (giving Arthur Delaney and Lotti Benardout exclusive vocal duties).
Hopefully, when Any Random Kindness is released, we can get to see Hælos again on a proper, full North American tour. For now, the new songs that the band played live sounded fantastic and worth checking them out, if they are coming to your area.
