Former Joy Division and New Order bassist, Peter Hook (billed as Peter Hook & the Light) will be returning to Minneapolis this November 2nd.

As with Hook’s previous appearances, there’s a theme to his set. In May 2018 and Oct 2016 he played Substance from Joy Division and New Order. In Nov 2014 he played a collection of early New Order, Brotherhood and Low-Life.

This 2019 tour, Hook will revisit New Order’s albums Technique and Republic. We’re very excited about Republic, because the record spawned some massive hits for the American audience.

Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany Young will be headlining First Avenue this November 1st. Young is an American, but was discovered by South Korean entertainment agency SM Entertainment at the age of fifteen. She moved to South Korea to join Girls’ Generation (later Girls’ Generation-TTS).

Venezuelan/American songwriter Devendra Banhart will be stopping by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis this November 2nd.

We last saw Banhart in May 2016 and said, “The Saturday night would also have a similar setup, Devendra Banhart, this time with a full electric band, would open up the show. As described by Banhart, there were no established setlist for his band and some sets were entirely improvised and some old songs are completely redone in a different direction. Whatever they decided to play, it was clear that Banhart was absolutely giggly about the whole thing. You can hear it in his voice and his mannerism, he was extremely excited to perform these songs for us.”

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... Black Angels Forget the Polar Vortex, the Winter Psych Storm is coming. A taste of Texas psychedelia hits the road as Austin’s The Black Angels brings 13th Floor Elevators rock legend Roky Erickson … Winter Los Angeles-based dream pop/shoegaze band Winter, they are touring in support of their debut LP earlier this year on Lolipop Records, with all-new single on Burger Records. …

Crowds gathered seamlessly this year into the Moreno Beach area of Lake Perris for the autumn ritual of camping, yoga, swimming and the hottest bands you’ll see all year. In its 8th go-around, this was a vast improvement from the insane parking situation and nasty weather of 2018, thanks be to the gods. Desert Daze is quite often referred to as the greatest festival ever, and in all my years of music festivals (and believe me, there have been many) I have to concur that this one undoubtably tops the charts. From art instillations that will dazzle your mind to tea ceremonies in tents under the desert morning sky, this festival is for the light of heart, the TRUE music lovers, and the seekers. While I was mesmerized by the first DAZE I attended at the Metaphysics Institute in Joshua Tree in 2017, there is something magical about the festival continuing on with its desert theme while adding a sparkling lake that you can drift in whenever you please. It’s also an hour and a half away from sunny Los Angeles, so fellow Angelenos should consider themselves pretty blessed 🙏.

SUNDAY

I caught the Q&A with Sean Lennon and Les Claypool. There was a lot of talk about festivals just being a vehicle for looking cool on social media (namely Instagram) and orgies and a book called Sex and Rockets. The two musicians laughed about DIY corporations and record labels and being a part of a movement that they forgot they were a part of…for all of the good reasons.

Samira Winter of the LA shoegaze pop band Winter hit the Block stage Saturday at 2. Samira has stated that she makes dreamy tunes to align with her inner child, and she certainly looked that part in her 90’s getup of blue side buns and pink sunglasses with a matching glittery hot pink dress. Her voice is soft and girlish, and her Portuguese is impeccable from growing up in Brazil. The band played some songs from their newest album Ethereality, and I think it’s a genius name for the album.

I hadn’t seen The Black Angels since 2012, so I was super stoked for their set. This Austin-based quintuplet is named after the penultimate track on Velvet Underground’s debut album, which in and of itself rocks. They opened with 2008’s hit Science Killer, and as the crowd is somehow lost in the thick haze of all the psychedelia this band emits, there is a calming energy that we’ll be here for awhile and we’re all fine with that. In the forefront of the spinning circle visuals and strobe lights, these guys went on to play Entrance Song, Currency, Bloodhounds on my Trail and Vermillion Eyes. They ended the show with the darkly delicious hit Bad Vibrations from their 2010 album Phosphene Dream.

As I have stated before, Desert Daze is not a festival for the people who want to party and galavant around in the hopes of “getting noticed”, as some of these modern-day musical shenanigans are all about. Sure, people party, but as a fellow-goer 3 years in a row, I can attest that people are truly there for the music and good vibes. In a sea of thousands of people, in this day in age, it’s incredibly refreshing to see people giving love and support to these artists who pour their heart and soul into their performance. There is a glow of acceptance and respect that infiltrates through the festival- and as long as Phil and his massive crew keep this going- it is surely not a weekend to be missed.

SATURDAY

Polish band Trupa Trupa took the stage first thing on Saturday at 1:30 on the Moon stage. Unfortunately, the Daze crowd were still rubbing their eyes and scrambling for coffee (especially after The Flaming Lips, which I was too much of a grandma to make it ’til midnight to see) so the fans were slim for these guys. Lead singer Grzegorz Kwiatkowski (pronounced Gregory in the states) introduced every song by title, so I know that they mostly played songs from their newest album Of the Sun.  In recent years, Trupa Trupa have toured extensively, playing at Austin’s SXSW, Primavera Sound, Iceland Airwaves, Colours of Ostrava, and Waves Vienna. The song Turn is super heavy with powerful drums, and I would be interested to know the context of their lyrics in a future interview. “From Poland with love!” was the band’s sweet sign-off.

Blackwater Holylight was one of the sickest highlights of the festival. This all girl band are like Hell’s Angel’s dressed in black and ready to knock your socks off. These Oregon based gals had their second album drop on Friday, and they were “So happy to be sharing it with you guy.” Amidst technical difficulties they gained massive support from the crowd, and got through a killer set quite effortlessly.

Altin Gün had a pretty little redhead in a white dress singing vocals with a tambourine, a ridiculous guitarist and a sound that is influenced by the Turkish 70’s. They have two drummers which is always entertaining, one playing the bongos with maracas interspersed throughout. Their new album Gece, released this April is one to keep in heavy rotation and was the entirety of their set.

JJUUJJUU got the crowd amped as they graced the stage in all their desert glory…white doctor coats included. “This feels pretty damn good right? We work all year for this weekend! My  name is Phil and I work for YOU!” Phil Pirrone screams into the mic. It’s not about selling tickets for him. It’s about getting bunch of good people together to listen to good bands in a good place…that’s it. I attest to this because I have seen it over and over- the good people, the good bands and the good places. He brings life to music and the energy together for the fans and for musicians alike. And they also put on one hell of a show. JJUUJJUU is not only an act not to be missed, it’s an experience, a recognition that makes you believe that rock is indeed not dead. As the festival grows, this band grows…and what a sight it is to see.

The Lumerians put on a crazy set with all black costumes and headlamps. Don’t ask me what they played. Just ask me if we danced (we did).

Pussy Riot was packed in the Sanctuary for the evening. This Russian act is beyond political…it’s downright explosive. They are creepy and somehow nostalgic of something between t.A.T.u. and like…Slipknot. The bizarre outfits and masks and slippers…oh my. It’s a heart-palpitating sight and their Russian version of ‘London Bridges Falling Down’ makes you rethink society as a whole. In short…a spectacle not to be missed.

Oh, man. Temples. The best show of the night. These guys single-handedly made the entirety of Desert Daze worth it all. God bless this British rock band. The mostly played tracks from their newest album Hot Motion, while throwing in Keep in the Dark towards the end of their set. This neo-psychedelic band is like going back to 1968, and I am beyond obsessed.

“Global LGBTQ icons” Tegan and Sara sold out their Fitzgerald Theater, in St Paul, on Sunday, October 13th. If you arrived early, there’s a small chance that you might get an upgrade on your seating. We were seated in the back of the venue, but right before the show started, the ushers came and moved closer to the front of the stage (to fill in any empty seats from late comers or no-shows).

This current Hey, I'm Just Like You tour is unlike previous T&S tours. First of all, it’s a very personal show… both for Tegan and Sara and their fans. It’s also a book tour, for High School, in addition to their new album, Hey, I’m Just Like You.

Since it’s partly a book reading show, they asked that we turn off our phones and remain in our seats (if we have to leave, they ask that you wait until they start playing music).

Between each song, the Tegan and Sara read excerpts from their memoir and showed some home videos. It’s to show us that, they’re “just like us”, that they came from humble beginning. Everything is laid out here, from their first taste of music (discovering a guitar under the staircase) to discovering their sexual awakening.

It’s interesting to note that prior to Sara falling in love with her best friend Naomi, that Tegan and Sara shared everything. For the first time, Sara had a secret that she kept from her sister, and it was a weird time for them.

Eventually, during the course of the show, that you find out that although the two didn’t really talk about their secrets… but it was out in the open all along in their songs.

Each book reading really give new insights and context to the songs they had written. Some of these songs were written when they were 16 years old, but it shows a sign of maturity that goes beyond their age.

While this show was a very special and meaningful tour for their diehard fans, I wouldn’t recommend it for casual T&S fans. This isn’t the “Everything is Awesome” tour, and they’re not going to play the hits. However, for those who love T&S and want to know everything about what makes them Tegan & Sara, this is a must-see (and hear) show.

This is another debate altogether, but in 2016, we wrote about how T&S’ overexposed pop-ness lead a divide in their fanbase. It feels like the Quinn sisters are returning to their teenage songs and perhaps leaving the pop stardom world behind? I guess we’ll find out with the next album.

Crowds gathered seamlessly this year into the Moreno Beach area of Lake Perris for the autumn ritual of camping, yoga, swimming and the hottest bands you’ll see all year. In its 8th go-around, this was a vast improvement from the insane parking situation and nasty weather of 2018, thanks be to the gods. Desert Daze is quite often referred to as the greatest festival ever, and in all my years of music festivals (and believe me, there have been many) I have to concur that this one undoubtably tops the charts. From art instillations that will dazzle your mind to tea ceremonies in tents under the desert morning sky, this festival is for the light of heart, the TRUE music lovers, and the seekers. While I was mesmerized by the first DAZE I attended at the Metaphysics Institute in Joshua Tree in 2017, there is something magical about the festival continuing on with its desert theme while adding a sparkling lake that you can drift in whenever you please. It’s also an hour and a half away from sunny Los Angeles, so fellow Angelenos should consider themselves pretty blessed 🙏.

FRIDAY

Los Angeles psych rockers Frankie and the Witch Fingers played Friday afternoon at The Block Stage. Most of the set consisted of songs from their newest album ZAM, which came out in March. These guys are funky and amazing to see in the daylight because you can really get lost in the goofy faces of frontman Dylan Sizemore. Lead guitarist Josh Menashe donned a dope Canadian tuxedo while slaying away on his solos, and bassist Alex Bulli rocked an 80’s-esq mohawk. Dylan yelled to the crowd towards the end of their set “Thanks for putting this on Phil, it’s the greatest festival in the world!” They ended with the single ‘Tea’, a heavy-hitting single that perfectly topped the performance.

Zachary Cole Smith of Brooklyn’s DIIV announced as they came out on the Moon stage that their new album Deceiver dropped on Friday. “We’re gonna play the whole album. This is kind of a nighttime record…kind of funny to be playing it here…” as the sun was blazing down on the crowd. They went right into Horeshead, the slow, grungy track with the slightly-more-than morbid lyrics “Horsehead…I’m never quite enough…I wanna breathe in and never breathe back out…” Laughing one of the members exclaimed, “Every song is in a different tune.” Skin Game, one of the more dance-worthy songs on the album, is like if Elliot Smith, Silverchair and Explosions in the Sky had a baby, with its transcendent vocals and catchy chorus. “Thanks for coming out guys, you’re being real nice, we thought there’d be like 50 people here,” exclaimed bassist Colin Caulfield, before ending their set with Acheron.

Jessica Pratt came out decked in a black suit wearing dark shades, her blonde hair shaggy around her face as she clutched her acoustic guitar. I had never heard her music before this festival, and after giving her latest album Quiet Signs a solid listen I was beyond thrilled to find this lady. She’s a 70’s folk dream, a lullaby and a haunting figure as she strummed her guitar and mesmerized the crowd with her breathy tunes. Accompanied by Matthew McDermott on piano, the set was slow and soft, a nice sigh of air as festival goers sipped on their coconut waters and beers. Ya gotta stay hydrated in the desert, people.

Atlas Sound’s Bradford Cox came out onto the Moon stage in all of his androgynous glory in a mustard yellow blouse and Mr. Roger’s style trousers. The golden hour sun hit his shaggy brown hair just right as they went into ‘The Light that Failed’, off the album Logos. This is one of my favorite albums of all time so I was beyond stoked that they played mostly the whole thing. The crowd went nuts as Lætitia Sadier from Stereolab came out to join them in the song Quick Canal. This was one of the coolest moments in DD history, in my humble opinion…it was beyond legendary. Afterwards Bradford reapplied his lipstick and sang the lyrics ‘Everything was bathed in light…everything loved its way…everything makes sense when you look at it from another way…’ to end the set.

The group Crumb from New York was a super rad show to see as the sun started to finally give relief over the campgrounds. I believe they mostly played songs from their album Jinx, the song M.R. seeming to be the biggest hit in the crowd. Lila Ramani is hypnotic and a definite stunner, and their music is melodic and super synth-heavy thanks to Brian Aronow. These guys definitely seem to be on the rise and they had just ended a several month tour prior to the festival.

Stereolab was as delightful as I’m sure they were in the 90’s. Laetitia swayed about the Moon stage in a multi-colored dress yelling to the crowd “Let’s ping pong now!” going right into the song off the Mars Audiac Quintet album. She kept saying cute little quips to introduce songs, such as “This is, yes, it’s a love song!” or “Are we all on an extension trip? Yes, this is the future of illusion. Fantasy.” These guys rocked out while still keeping it dreamy with a sort of sprinkling of mod 60’s pop. This upbeat set under an almost full moon was otherworldly and something that is a once in a lifetime experience. Come and Play in the Milky Night and French Disko neared the end of the show, with Lo Boob Oscillator capping it off.

Although I was dying to hear My Girls, electro-psych band Animal Collective’s set did not disappoint. They opened up with the old school tune from 2005’s Feels, Banshee Beat, fronting stunning visuals of disco dancing girls and hearts. These guys played a bunch of new material, a few being “Gem and I”, “Bolder”, and “Strangers”.  Another, “DownDownDownDown” was one that was rare and unreleased. The trippy background art was ridiculous, the one with hands almost holding onto each other being my favorite. Their encore performance was “For Reverend Green”, which they hadn’t played in 12 years.

Lucy Dacus sold out the Cedar Cultural Center show, in Minneapolis, on Saturday, October 12th. Like Dacus’ last appearance at the Surly Brewing Festival in 2018, it’s an all-girls lineup.

First up was Austin’s Sun June with a brief 30-min set. The group (Laura, Michael, Justin, Sarah, Stephen) was selected as part of the official SXSW 2019 Showcase, after wowing them at the Audiotree and KVRX Library Sessions.

The band played some tracks from their debut record, Years, including their closing number, “Young”.

Next was Liza Anne (with full band of Josh on bass, Cody on drums, and Robbie on guitars), who could not get over at how cold it was in Minneapolis (it was randomly snowing throughout the day). The Nashville-based band only packed T-Shirts and jeans, so they were not prepared for the change in temperature.

They started their set with “Paranoia”, followed by “Small Talks”. Speaking of talks, Anne mentioned that the “I’m Tired, You’re Lonely” song is about how you shouldn’t talk when you’re tired or drunk (or both).

Richmond-based singer Lucy Dacus ended the all-women show, playing plenty of beloved songs. Fans loved it… but we already this was the case when we saw her headlined the sold-out 7th Street Entry in April 2018: “Still in her early twenties, Lucy Dacus is already showing a musical maturity, years beyond her actual age. The Richmond, VA singer-songwriter is touring in support of her second full-length, Historian (Matador Records), an album of leaps-and-bounds growth for her, that is the exact opposite of any sophomore slump and she seemed genuinely happy to be headlining here, after previously opening for Car Seat Headrest and Hamilton Leithauser. Dacus is so confident in the new album (considering it her definitive musical statement), the first seven songs played were all from the new record, beginning with single, ‘Addictions’. Her seemingly calm voice belies a building sound and lyrics that dive deep into wells of adversity, though provide a glimmer of hope in any darkness.”

After a successful 2018 tour, and meeting with other like-minded women singers, Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker, they decided to form Boygenius (stylized as boygenius). While the supergroup is currently in hiatus, expect the three to get together when they record a debut LP. She didn’t play any boygenius songs, but with two critically acclaimed albums, No Burden and Historian, she really didn’t need to. Instead, she played a couple of cover songs, an Édith Piaf song, “La vie en rose” and Phil Collins’ signature song, “In The Air Tonight”. Both these covers were recorded and released as singles from Lucy Dacus in 2019. Based on other covers she’s released (like Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark”), you might think there’ll be a cover-lover collection coming out soon.

Heavy metal band Gwar headlined Skyway Theatre on October 11th, as part of their Use Your Collusion tour.

Opening up the show was Detroit’s Against the Grain (featuring bassist/singer Chris Nowak, guitarist Nick Bellomo, guitarist/singer Kyle Davis, and drummer Rob Nowak).

The band first came together with the release of their self-titled album in November 2010, and since then have signed to Self-Destructo Records to produce Motor City Speed Rock, Surrounded By Snakes (which they ended their set with the title track), and Road Warriors.

Songs were sung by their two vocalists, Chris Nowak and Kyle Davis… but both can be seen singing to Motörhead’s “Stay Clean”.

Up next was Portland’s Toxic Holocaust. The band looks and plays thrash metal, originally formed in 1999 by singer and songwriter Joel Grind. Currently, the band features drummer Tyler Becker and guitarist Robert Gray (both joining a few years ago).

Naturally, with the new band members, they are familiar with their new record Primal Future: 2019 (Entertainment One Records) … but taking a look at their setlist, you can see that the band chose to concentrated on older classic songs that worked well live (especially considering they only had about a 20-min set after soundcheck).

“You guys are f**** awesome,” Grind said, after seeing as how well the audience slammed danced to “Nuke the Cross”.

They ended their set with “The Lord of the Wasteland”, a song that they confessed as “a dance number” and looked forward to seeing everyone at the show shaking their bodies.

Second to Gwar, Sacred Reich (singer/bassist Phil Rind, guitarist Wiley Arnett, drummer Dave McClain, and rhythm guitarist Joey Radziwill) was the most intriguing band on the lineup. You see, the band actually broke up in 2000, but after a long hiatus, got back together to play local shows and keeping their legacy of the band alive. Last year, the Phoenix-based band signed to Metal Blade Records and wrote and recorded their fifth album, Awakening - making it their first new music in over 26 years!

Instead of playing hit songs from the 90s, the band decided to mostly stick to new songs… which you can tell they were really excited to showcase.

Since the band had a longer set to play, singer Phil Rind spoke quite a bit between songs. Everything from mentioning their newest guitarist, Joey Radziwill (age 23), was originally from Buffalo, Minnesota, to ice-fishing was just an excuse to drink beer. Rind also tried to compare Minnesota (“Don’t remember it being so cold!”) and also asked if anyone in the audience remember the Minneapolis venue The Mirage (which according to the internet, the club closed in 1997 due to lack of a liquor license).

For a band that hadn’t toured in over two decades, they were seasoned pros at playing their music. As Rind puts it, “Us old cats know what we’re doing.”

Gwar (currently Mike Derks, Brad Roberts, Brent Purgason, Michael Bishop, Casey Orr) was the headliner. Although there are no original band members since the death of Dave Brockie in 2014, the crew does Gwar justice by carrying on their unique music legacy… by combining metal with Warhammer, orcs & demons, and distinctively costumes.

We’ve seen Gwar a few times (Des Moines (27 Aug 2015), Minneapolis (18 Nov 2012), and Chicago (15 Sep 2012)), and it’s always a new and different show.

You see, with each tour, there is a new storyline in the world of Gwar. Last year, the band killed Donald Trump, so this tour, the band is being impeached by the planet Earth. With a new storyline, that meant new songs (to fit with the them) and also delightful new dialogue from the band.

Even if you don’t like metal music, you’ll still be very entertained by beheading (and the infamous blood squirts - so wear a raincoat to these shows!), puppets, and incredible costumes. Personally speaking, it’s the most entertaining show we’ve seen all year.

Nashville’s Judah & The Lion will be headlining the Palace Theatre on Halloween, October 31st. The group’s “Let Go” song was recently chosen as ESPN’s New College Football Anthem for 2019-20 Season, which is quite a big deal…. Although not as surprising as you might think, considering their catchy/singalong style of songs - and the fact that they were part of Minneapolis’ March Madness 2019: “Local DJ Lenka Paris was obviously having fun spinning before and between sets and Nashville's Judah and the Lion has grown leaps and bounds since we saw them less than five years ago at the 7th Street Entry.”

And yes, we first saw them in November 2014 and was blown away: “ To paraphrase one of Judah & the Lion's song, the band is not rock and not country, but 'somewhere in-between'. It's feel-good singalong folk rock, think Mumford & Sons, and you get the idea. Many of their songs got their most dedicated fans to help sing along, especially on "Back's Against the Wall", where Akers stopped a second to hear his fans finish the lyrics... with the biggest grin on his face.”

Philadelphia-based band The Menzingers is touring in support of their Hello Exile album (Epitaph Records). The record was produced by Will Yip (Mannequin Pussy, Quicksand), was recorded over the course six weeks at Yip’s Conshohocken, PA-based Studio 4.

We caught the Menzingers in August 2016 and wrote, “The Menzingers was next, showing up on stage after the inspirational speech from Independence Day. This pop-punk (although leaning more towards the punk side) band from Philadelphia seems to be gaining speed and fans with each day that passes. This band is not new to the scene as their first album A Lesson in the Abuse of Information Technology (they didn't play any songs off of this album) came out back in 2007 but they didn't seem to get the recognition they deserved until On the Impossible Past came out in 2012. Since then, these guys have been thrilling audiences with their great live shows which are full of energy and talent.”

The Menzingers will be bringing Tigers Jaw and Culture Abuse on tour.

We saw Toro in February 2013 and reported, “Audrey reported that the show at the Fine Line Music Café on February 20th was sold out. Brooklyn-based art pop project San Fermin is returning to Minneapolis this October 26th. The group released their new album The Cormorant I via Better Company (bandleader Ellis Ludwig-Leone's new imprint under Sony Music Masterworks).

We last saw the band in Apr 2017 and wrote, “In stark contrast, San Fermin’s performance was bright and full of brilliant colors. They have stepped up their game, especially since we saw them in 2014 and 2016 and very little effort was put in stage production. With the Belong tour, San Fermin had custom background and custom color-changing lights... making their show, at least visually, very appealing.”

Brody Dalle A deeply personal album, Brody Dalle's debut solo release, Diploid Love (out April 29) is a recording about life: creating it, living it and surviving it. Brody spent a year writing, playing, recording and co-producing her first solo album.... Death Valley Girls Death Valley Girls, who previously appeared at Desert Daze 2017 will open the show. The 2018 tour starts today, and will stop by Minneapolis’ First Avenue on April 19th. ....

When I turned 20, I was as Britney (and Dido) said, “Not a girl, not yet a woman.” I was, however, a serious music fanatic, feverishly listening to anything I could get my ears on. I was also a frustrated college sophomore at a small garbage school in nowheresville Wisconsin. My desire was for something, anything really, that didn’t reflect my conservative football-centered surroundings and spoke to my burgeoning rebel soul. Something brash, angry and unapologetically female. At this point, Courtney Love had all but abandoned music to pursue movies and Oxycontin. I loved Patti Smith but craved someone more modern. I was on the path to discovering PJ Harvey and Sleater-Kinney and a few years out from other rock and roll heroes who weren't cishet white men. I wanted angst and passion and blood. Enter: Brody Dalle. Dalle shredded her guitar, screamed like a holy terror and wrote songs with brutal imagery, guillotine blades and chests bursting open revealing oozing, weeping hearts. I. Was. Hooked. Brody and the Distillers became the glue as I pieced together my awkward adult self and cemented the very important Ride-Or-Die female friendships that would see me through my 20s.

The Distillers went through some growing pains themselves. Just 3 years after their breakout album 2003’s Coral Fang, which saw a reluctant Dalle claim the Hot Topic crown and enter a bigger arena of fame, the group disbanded. Rigorous touring, the music industry, and inter-personal struggles took its toll on the four members. Drummer Andy Granelli went on to play in Darker My Love, bassist Ryan Sinn joined Angels and Airwaves and guitarist Tony Bevilacqua and Dalle formed the short-lived but excellent project Spinerette, with rock veterans Jack Irons and Alain Johannes. Dalle also released her first solo album Diploid Love in 2014.

In early 2018, Dalle started teasing some recent photos of herself and the band and unveiled a video on social media, confirming the Distillers were back from the dead. The Coral Fang line-up announced their first reunion show in late 2018 and released the singles “Man vs. Magnet” and “Blood in Gutters.” 

Which brings us to now: 13 years after their last Twin Cities show (was I there? Was it at the Quest with Queens of the Stone Age and Millionaire? Cuz that show was bonkers) a very enthusiastic Varsity theater crowd welcomed the Distillers back to the frost-bitten streets of Minneapolis. They brought along bad-ass stoner rockers Death Valley Girls and that mysterious Mojave-desert-cool that follows that quartet wherever it goes busted through an initially icy reception. Bonnie Bloomgarden and company bring the heavy Black Sabbath-y riffs and chugging Cramps vibe, but also a serious dose of charm. Bloomgarden was delightful and hilarious, telling the audience that we made “the right decision” by spending our Friday night with them and then applauding our decision. I wish everyone was as supportive! 

The Distillers took the stage to the triumphant swell of Edith Piaf’s “No Regrets” and amidst flashes of colored lights and an outpouring of adoration, dove into their 20+ years catalogue. To be honest, this was the first show in a very long time where I knew EVERY SONG and *almost* ALL THE LYRICS. These are tried-and-true anthems about being young and confused and looking to music for salvation and stomping out an identity in spite of the status quo; the opener “Sick of It All” to “Crazed Young Peeling” to sexism-bucking rockers like “Oh Serena” and “Seneca Falls.” My favorite track “Hall of Mirrors” sounds just as sharp and painfully personal as it did when I first spun Coral Fang in my car and “Gypsy Rose Lee,” a stirring love letter to childhood, was especially exciting to hear as it hasn’t been played much since 2004. Other show highlights include the fantastic “For Tonight You’re Only Here To Know” with its urgent siren-like hook and the straight-up singalong that occurred during fan-favorite “The Hunger.” A cover of Frank Black’s “(I Want To Live On An) Abstract Plain” was a wonderful surprise along with their latest single “Man vs. Magnet.”

I noticed early on that the band was taking some time in between songs for Dalle to recover. Singing can be taxing on any vocalist, but for a singer like Dalle, whose expressive wailing and screaming are at the front and center of every track, it looks physically exhausting. Dalle is no slouch though and killed it on challenging tunes like the lusty 5-minute-plus “The Hunger” and “Dismantle Me.” And besides, the minute long breaks served as a great time to shout out just how much we loved and missed our Distillers. 

The band was in great shape considering the spate of bad luck that had befallen them in the last year; drummer Granelli (who was sporting a Dead Moon t-shirt) sustained a terrible hand injury in a bike accident that forced them to cancel their August dates and Dalle battled sickness early in their tour. Thankfully Granelli is healed and back to busting the skins and everyone looks healthy! A make-up smeared and very zen Bevilacqua flanked Dalle’s left side while Sinn bounced around on her right. Dalle took time to thank the undulating crowd not once, not twice, but like 5 different times.

But the pleasure is all ours, Brody. To a woman whose music was and has been my salve for many frustrating, humiliating, soul-crushing experiences, my respite from anyone who wanted to keep me small and quiet and complacent... thank you, Brody.
