The Growlers at First Ave

Los Angeles-based rockers The Growlers headlined First Avenue’s mainroom in Minneapolis, in support of their upcoming album Natural Affair.
Oklahoma’s Sports opened the show. The band is normally a trio (Cale, Jacob, and Christian) but for their live set, they’re joined by an additional guitarist.
Although I love the matching costumes and their performance, I think the band’s name is just too common (and confusing). In fact, there is another band called Sports from Philadelphia, but they’ve re-named themselves as Remember Sports.
The group’s latest is called Everyone's Invited, which features their single “Cadillac”.
The Growlers (core members: singer Brooks Nielsen, lead guitarist Matt Taylor, and keyboard player Kyle Straka) closed out the show. Speaking to some fans in line, they mentioned that their fanbase are hardcore fans… many of them collecting everything they’ve released (on cassettes and vinyls). Listening to their music, you can hear influence of surf and pop music… it’s actually hard to put your fingers on it, but the band insists on calling their music “beach goth” (which they’ve named their record label and music festival on). Whatever it is, it’s a very laid sound.
They’re also associated with Burger Records (which we saw them headlined the Burgerama Caravan of the Stars tour in 2013), but I feel their more successful and polish, than what the cassette label can produce.
Growlers actually recorded their new album Natural Affair already (with singles like “Pulp of Youth”), but the actual album won’t be released until October 25th.
