Varsity Theater marquee Grace VanderWaal Setlist
|
America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal played a sold-out show at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Friday, September 6th.
Los Angeles, by the way of Wisconsin, Patrick Martin opened up the show, playing his debut single “Cinema Love” and “Stranger Nights” and other songs from a forthcoming debut album.
You can tell that he was interested in music at a very young age, and influenced by classic rock bands like Fleetwood Mac and Allman Brothers.
He ended his set with what sounded like “Hunger Years”, and based on the audience’s liking to his sound, he could be an artist to watch for in the future. The unfortunate thing is that he shares a common and there are many authors or similar-sounding names out there.
As for 15-year-old Grace VanderWaal… she’s possibly the youngest and richest singer right now. Her career started when she was 12, winning America's Got Talent in 2016. We were lucky enough to see her in July 2017, fresh off her winning.
It’s obvious, based on her many, many tween/teenage fans (and their parents), she’s built up quite a fanbase here.
VanderWaal is still young, so she basically played almost everything from her debut album Just the Beginning, plus throwing in a few cover songs (Billy Joel’s “Vienna” and Rex Orange County’s “Best Friend”).
It’s pretty amazing that she still had so many songs and ideas in her, even though she was always apologizing for trying to play new songs… including “The City” from a forthcoming EP she has in the works.
The new songs are good and shows a sign of maturity, and hopefully she’ll be returning back in town soon. For many young pre-teens, this was their very first concert and it sounded like it’s a great experience for them.
