Singer/songwriter David Berman, from Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, killed himself by hanging on August 7, according to Medical Examiner Rules via pitchfork.com.

Silver Jews formed in 1989 by Berman, along with Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. It’s often mistaken by casual fans that Silver Jews was a “Pavement side project”, but it was really its own entity. Silver Jews broke up in 2009.

We briefly mentioned Nerdin Out Con last year, because we like attending these comic book conventions (read our coverages on MN Fan Fest, MN Toy Posse, Wizard World, Blizzard World, MSP Comicon (formerly Fallcon/Springcon), Crypticon, and C2E2). We didn’t go on their inaugural show, but we did manage to attend their second show - which took place August 10-11, 2019.

The first thing you should know is that it was created by a comic book/pop culture store called Nerdin Out in Rochester, Minnesota. So naturally, their convention also took place Rochester. The city is over an hour’s drive from where we live (north of Minneapolis), so it’s really an effort for us to make it to the show.

The other thing you should know is that although they advertise their price as “low as $10”, that is a little deceiving. That price is reserved for children, adult ticket prices are about $20 ($25 at the door) for adults.

Last, if you’ve never attended these conventions, the admission prices do not include autograph fees or photo fees, etc. However, I would have to add, that the prices for the celebrities at this show are reasonable (about $20-$30 for autographs and $10-$20 for photos).

The main programming for Saturday was for Jake “the Snake” Roberts and Hacksaw Jim Duggan, reflecting on their wrestling days. There was also a costume contest later in the day and a paid comedy show, but since we were attending only as fans, there was no obligation to stay and fully cover the event from start to finish.

From my understanding, everything was improved over last year’s event: more guests, bigger space (there were two very large rooms), and more vendors (merchandise and food sellers).

We were impressed with the turnout (their Facebook page boasts at least 5,000 in attendance) and we loved talking to the friendly dealers (they were always willing to go down in prices). We think the convention can only grow larger and larger every year.

The only problem we have is that the convention is located in Rochester… which is a little too far for us.

P.S., We also checked out the Nerdin Out store, which was located near the convention. We were very happy we stopped by, because we found an action figure that were searching for 12 years. Anyway, the store had a little of everything: toys, back issues, new comics, gaming, and tables for gamers.

Portland’s Summer Cannibals kicked off their 2019 tour at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on August 8th.

Starting the show was Minneapolis punk trio Meese (not to be confused with New Zealand’s Meese or New York’s Meese or Toronto’s Meese or UK’s Helen Meese)… formerly known as Mease (not to be confused with Rhode Island’s Mease). The band played some grungy/punk songs that sounded like “No Skin On My Soul”.

From my understanding, neither Meese or punk duo TV Moms had played the 7th Street Entry before, and the tiny venue impressed TV Moms’ singer (labeling Summer Cannibals as “legit”).

At one point, TV Moms played so hard, they ripped their guitar plug and unintentionally ended on one of their song. They jokingly added, “We planned that.” And with that, they closed their set with the first song on their new album Believe Anything , called “Get Away”.

It's hard to believe that the first time we saw grunge/punk band Summer Cannibals, they were one of the opener for electronic pop band Chvrches in June 2014. We wrote, “Summer Cannibals opened the show with a 35 min. set, a Portland-based post-grunge band featuring vocalist/guitarist Jessica Boudreaux and former Minnesotan Marc Swart on guitar, who was cheered on by family in the audience…. Boudreaux has a sometimes fierce vocal, not unlike Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, and Swart’s fuzzy guitar recalls the best things about the Northwest sound of the early ‘90s. Swart, who hadn’t been back to the state in five years, had even teased a Nirvana riff before one of the songs, while perhaps unconsciously promoting a competing show with his Red Fang t-shirt, as that band was playing down the street the same evening. Tracks like ‘Wear Me Out’ and ‘Hey/I was Saved’ sounded both influenced and updated for a 21st century audience.”

After we’ve seen the band two other times, we can conclude that the band absolutely loves Minneapolis. This is partly because they probably have a former Minnesotan band member (guitarist Marc Swart). Singer Jessica Boudreaux (with slitters on her eyelashes!) mentioned that, “we haven’t been here in three years now”, noting that their last appearance was in Apr 2016 (they opened up for The Thermals) and we wrote, “The blistering noise-pop of Portland brethren and Thermals pals, Summer Cannibals, came next to punch holes in our faces and light fires under our asses.”

Since the tour is for their new album, Can't Tell Me No (Tiny Engines), the band did play quite a few new songs, including new single “False Anthem”.

Australian singer Mallrat just headlined the sold-out 7th Street Entry show in Minneapolis on August 7th.

Opening up the show was Minneapolis-based Denny (stylized as DENNY), featuring Alexander Rollins, Randon Nelson, and Sully. The trio ended their very brief 30-min with their 2016 hit single “Bloom”.

DJ Denim came on stage shortly after 8pm, and warmed up the crowd with a medley mix of some popular songs (such as Princess Nokia’s “Tomboy”).

Singer/rapper Mallrat (aka Grace Shaw) came on stage to unveil her brand new crazy pink folded top (which resembles a flower of some sort). Shaw would later confess that the shirt is too big and she can’t properly move her arms… describing that she felt like a Tyrannosaurs Rex.

Starting out her set with “Tokyo Drift”, she would move back and forth and smiling brightly as she sings, “and we're never on time, laughing at the wrong time”.

Shaw quickly mentioned this was only her second time in Minneapolis (first as headliner). She previously appeared with Maggie Rogers in October 2018… which we saw and mentioned, “Mallrat is easily likeable. After starting her set with “Make Time”, she quickly got our hopes up when she said, “that was our slowest song, so from here onward, it’s all bouncy dance songs.” Sure enough, she’s out dancing and being the self-described “Hannah Montana of the rap game”.”

Since we already mentioned that Mallrat is relatively new to the scene, having only released two EPs: Uninvited and In the Sky , she basically played everything that she wrote and throwing in a few cover songs.

The last part of her set were basically all hits, “UFO”, “Groceries” and set closer “Uninvited”.

Hopefully, with an upcoming tour, and by the time Driving Music is released (set for September 2019), we may hear more music from Mallrat.

What an unbeatable combination: Ben Folds (of Ben Folds Five) and Violent Femmes co-headlining the upcoming Surly Brewing Music Festival on Wednesday, August 14th.

If you grew up in the 90s, you’ll probably be at this show… so naturally all general admission tickets are sold out. We’ve seen both acts many times before, but to have them on one bill is pretty amazing.

We saw Ben Folds in 2012 and wrote, “This is a fact, but the Ben Folds Five show I attended in 2012, it was one of the best show I've ever seen. Singer Ben Folds clearly had a lot of fun touring and meeting their passionate fans... and they played all the hits.”

We saw VF in Oct 2017 and said, “Violent Femmes’s triumphant return to First Avenue (their first night) took place last night, July 5th. Having experienced both VF’s shows (July 5th and July 6th), I can tell you, on reflection, that the band really wanted to give fans that attended both nights something worth their time and money. Sure, the popular classic tracks were a staple on all their shows (although rearranged in some cases), but it’s the rarely heard ‘Gimme the Car’ that were indeed special for fans who attended the first night.”

New Wave Welsh band The Alarm will be headlining the Fine Line Music Café this August 14th. The band had a massive hit in 1983 with “Sixty Eight Guns”, so expect to hear that song live.

We’ve seen electro-pop/danse wave band The Faint before, and we can say that they are one of the best live acts we’ve ever seen. We saw them in Sep 2016 and wrote, “To me, the Faint are the musical equivalent of hanging yourself upside down and letting all the blood rush to your head; the warm, sparkly disorientation that follows is exactly what I felt listening to Danse Macabre all those years ago. Now, 15 years later, this great band can still give me that tingly sensation.”

The group is back with a new studio album (their first in four years) called Egowerk (Saddle Creek).

Kamasi Washington is currently on a Summer tour with legendary pianist and composer Herbie Hancock… and between those shows, Washington decided to do a few side shows - one of which is this Sunday’s Kamasi Washington headlining show at First Avenue.

We saw Washington at Rock the Garden 2018 and mentioned, “Kamasi Washington introduced us to his father (Rickey Washington) on soprano sax for the jazzy song “The Rhythm Changes” (featuring Patrice Quinn on vocals). Quite fitting, especially on Father’s Day weekend.”

American duo The Bird And The Bee is back in the area at the Turf Club this August 11th. As previously mentioned, only singer/bird Inara George is touring. Her musical partner, the bee, Greg Kurstin famously does not tour/refuse to tour. With their last appearance in town, George will likely call Greg and have him say hi to the audience via facetime.

Alex Lilly and Samantha Sidley to open. It’s good to see Lilly’s name again, as she previously toured and opened up for the Bird and Bee in November 2015.

Former The Kinks keyboardist Ian Gibbons has died at the age of 67.

According to ultimateclassicrock.com, singer and co-founder Ray Davies said, “To simply say Ian will be missed would be an understatement. When he auditioned for the band, he only played a few chords before I knew he was the right guy to have on keyboard, he seemed to know the right voicing to musically slot in between the other members of the band. And with the Kinks, that took some doing!”

It’s definitely not Gotham. Pennyworth is the new drama television series from Epix, based on Batman’s butler Alfred Pennyworth. I never thought I would ever care for a show based on a very minor character, but now I’m convinced this is the best Batman show ever.

I feel that the creators are really into pop girl singers and possibly Morrissey fans. Looking over their future episode titles, “Cilla Black”, “Sandie Shaw”, and “Marianne Faithful”, all have ties to Morrissey - particularly Sandie Shaw, whom Moz tried to resurrect her career in the 80s and 90s.

Let’s break down how these singers are related to Morrissey:

Shirley Bassey: Bassey’s songs “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “Ave Marie”, and “This is My Life” were used as the outro songs to The Smiths (1986) and Morrissey’s concerts (1988, 1991 and 2002).

Cilla Black: The Smiths covered “Work is a Four Letter Word”. According an interview with guitarist Johnny Marr, he cited this was the song that basically broke up the Smiths: “'Work Is A Four Letter Word' I hated. That was the last straw, really. I didn't form a group to perform Cilla Black songs. That was it, really. I made a decision that I was going to get away on holiday. The only place I could think of was L.A. L.A. was the only place I knew where there'd be sunshine, so off I went. I never saw Morrissey again.”

Julie Christie: A young Julie Christie’s image was used as the backdrop to Morrissey’s concerts in 2011. Also The Smiths’ “William, It Was Really Nothing” was a song based on Billy Liar (the film starring Tom Courtney and Julie Christie).

Sandie Shaw: There’s a long history of Sandie Shaw and The Smiths/Morrissey. I don’t need to list them all, but for the record, Shaw did cover The Smiths’ “Hand in Glove”, “I Don't Owe You Anything” and the rarely heard “Jeane”.

Alma Coogan: Some people seem to think Morrissey’s song “Alma Matters” celebrates singer Alma Coogan, but I don’t believe it. The truth is probably, like “Lucky Lisp” (which is based on the popular phrase “Lucky Lips”), it’s just a playful wording of “alma mater”.

Marianne Faithful: The title (Marianne Faithful) may be a misspelling of singer Marianne Faithfull (or “Faithful” could be a character in Pennyworth). The real Marianne Faithfull covered Morrissey’s “Dear God Please Help Me”.

Speaking of girl singers, Paloma Faith plays a villain that looks a bit like Myra Hindley (of The Moor Murders). We were lucky enough to saw Faith at the Triple Rock Social Club in Oct 2014, writing: “Personally, I like it when singers talk on stage, especially if they tell some interesting stories. I felt like she was really down the earth, hearing her thoughts on things. For example, she's not going to sugarcoat why she doesn't tour America all that often - it's expensive to bring her here, and the label won't put up the money unless the album sells really well in the States.”

Season seven of CBS’s Elementary is probably the best show on television right now. It’s a shame that no one I know is watching this amazing show. It’s currently my favorite show this year.

This wasn’t always the case with me, because when the show first started in 2012, I wasn’t exactly sure if I liked it at all. You see, I wasn’t a fan that they changed Dr Watson to a Chinese woman sidekick. Over time, the show made her into a great partner (not just a sidekick) and can hold her own toe-to-toe with Sherlock Holmes.

I also wasn’t a fan that they made Holmes into a struggling drug addict (or rather former addict), because I thought he was too smart to experiment with drugs… Again, the show, over time, did a wonderful job in convincing me why the character would do this.

If you haven’t caught up or don’t watch the show, last year saw Holmes confessing to the murder of serial killer Michael Rowan (to save the real killer from going to prison). As a result, Holmes (and Watson) fled America and we saw the duo in London at the end of Season 6! I was very much looking forward to the further of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in London… but probably due to budgetary reasons, only one episode took place in England in the current season.

The two quickly returned back to America, investigating the shooting of NYC police Captain Thomas Gregson. Their investigations eventually led to our current main villain, Odin Reichenbach (played by the brilliant James Frain). I won’t go into details, but that last Elementary episode saw the death of a close personal relation to Holmes.

What a gut puncher of a cliffhanger, and I just can’t wait to see Holmes’ next move against Reichenbach.

One of the best crime drama in 2019 is Cinemax’s Jett. It might start off a little slow… and you may be confused by the many characters in the drama, but once you get past the first few episodes, you’ll really love this smartly-written show.

The show is about an ex-thief (well, not really “ex”) called Jett (played by Carla Gugino). There’s a large cast of characters and the show does a good job in introducing each character, such as the ruthless crime boss Charlie Baudelaire (played by Giancarlo Esposito from Breaking Bad) and his brutal son Junior.

This show is very adult, it has plenty of sex and violence (thanks to being on Cinemax) and it’s generally just a dark show. However, there are some silly moments (any scenes with Jett’s young daughter), which I’m not a fan of. I understand why the producers wanted a little sunlight in this dark world, but those scenes just feel like they belong in another show.

So far, Jett is in deep trouble, but I just know that she has a plan to dig herself out… and based on what I’ve seen, the writers will do an amazing job in satisfying and tying up all the loose ends.

Portland indie punk band Summer Cannibals is returning to Minneapolis with their new album Can't Tell Me No (Tiny Engines). We caught them a few times, the last being April 2016, which we said, “The blistering noise-pop of Portland brethren and Thermals pals, Summer Cannibals, came next to punch holes in our faces and light fires under our asses. Guitarist/vocalist Jessica Boudreaux, drummer Devon Shirley, bassist Jenny Logan and newly minted guitarist Jen sweated and shredded through an hour set spilling over with gems from their first two records as well as the soon-to-be-released Full of It (out May 27th on Kill Rock Stars).”

Can you believe it, that the first time we saw Summer Cannibals, they opened up for Chvrches in June 2014?
