Squeeze 2019 Tour Read More Squeeze "The New Lennon and McCartney", Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook (billed under their popular band name Squeeze) will be playing an acoustic set across America this November. ... KT Tunstall I’ll never forget seeing KT Tunstall over at the now-defunct Epic in Minneapolis in November 2010. KT actually paused the show so she can ask the girl in front to stop talking on her cellphone.

The “Lennon and McCartney of their generation” Squeeze is celebrating their 45th band anniversary this 2019. To celebrate, the duo is on their “The Squeeze Songbook 2019” tour.

We caught the band in Nov 2015 and wrote, “Everything old is new again as classic UK band Squeeze is back on the road, in the Americas as an acoustic tour featuring founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, playing a lively two-night sold out run recently in town and promoting Cradle to the Grave (Virgin/EMI Records), their thirteenth album and first new music since 1998.”

KT Tunstall will open the show. We’ve seen KT a few times, the last being Sep 2016 and we described it as, “The funny story about her biggest hit ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’, she said after moving to Florida, she walked by an Irish bar and heard the local bar band covering her song. The singer started shredding on the solo, and she locked eyes with the singer and gave him the A-Okay hand gesture. The punch line is, the band at the Irish bar, had no idea who she was.”

UK singer/songwriter Barns Courtney is headlining the Fine Line Music Café this September 3rd… touring in support of his new album 404 (set for release September 6 on Capitol Records). We saw Courtney in Oct 2018 and said, “Rising singer-songwriter Barns Courtney opened the evening with a spirited half-hour opening set that left him completely drenched at the end of things. New full-length is due soon on Virgin Records, but in the meantime, Courtney has released various singles and has both a lyrical sensitivity and a big room stomp sound to his songs, which include radio-friendly songs, ‘99’, ‘Glitter & Gold’, and ‘Fire’ (which first caught on in the Bradley Cooper-as-chef movie, Burnt).”

We love Irish singer Glen Hansard (from The Frames and Swell Season) and always happy to see that he’s back in town. We last saw him in Nov 2015 and mentioned, “We've seen Glen Hansard before, but never quite like this. He's joined on stage by a large ensemble (see entire cast and crew photograph below), including both a horn and wind instrument section. Familiar The Swell Season songs were suddenly shown in a new, livelier, and possibly improved, versions of these classic songs.”

Hansard is returning with his new record This Wild Willing.

Singer/songwriter Grace VanderWaal will be headlining the Varsity Theater this Friday, September 6th. We saw VanderWaal at Starkey 2017 (when she was 13 years old) and wrote, “The youngest star of the evening, thirteen year-old Grace Vanderwaal next took to the stage for a short three-song set. The winner of last year’s America Got Talent competition seemed very humbled and appreciative to be invited and opened with ‘Clay’ from her Perfectly Imperfect EP (Columbia Records). “Music is the universal language, it connects to everyone in some way” she said before ‘Light the Sky’ and ended with picking up the ukulele for her first single, ‘Moonlight’.”

VanderWaal’s new single “Waste My Time” is out now and Teen Vogue described it as “synthy dance-pop smash”.

Beloved Los Angeles band That Dog (stylized as that dog.) will be releasing a new album Old LP on October 4, 2019 via Ume… their first new album in 22 years (or 3.14 in dog years)!

We just saw PBDY last week. The Los Angeles-based producer and DJ recently released his brand new single “Eucalyptus & Lavender / So Help Me (DOG)” via Brainfeeder.

The track features Jeff Parker (of animal-named Tortoise) on guitar, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on viola and Justin Brown (from another animal-named band Thundercat) on drums.

Joyero is the new project from Andy Stack (the founding member of rock duo Wye Oak). His solo debut record Release the Dogs is out now on Merge Records. Personally speaking, I’m not that surprised, considering that the other half of Wye Oak, Jenn Wasner has her own project with Flock of Dimes… so that probably left Stack with a little time on his hands to produce this solo album.

DOG IN THE SNOW doginthesnow.com Dog In The Snow is the stagename for Brighton–based artist Helen Ganya Brown. Her album Vanishing Lands is due this November 15, 2019, on Bella Union. We randomly saw Brown in July 2016 at a Fear of Men show (she worked the keys and bass). The record promises “an imposing, haunting and luminous collection of songs in the darker spaces between dream-pop, art-rock and electronica, lifted by euphoric melodies, ravishing vocals and absorbing lyrics.”

HACKTIVIST hacktivist.uk.com British rap metal band Hacktivist released their new single “Dogs of War” this month. The song was inspired by a series of talks by Mark Passio and George Orwell’s themes of “double think” and “news speak” (from the novel 1984). The Bacon Brothers (Kevin Bacon and Michael Bacon) returned to the Dakota Jazz Club last Wednesday, August 21st.

Unlike their last appearance, this show was strictly all-Bacon Brothers, meaning a slightly longer set and no opening band.

Again, the live band features bassist Paul Guzzone, keyboardist Joe Mennonna, guitarist Tim Quick, and drummer Frank Vilardi. Everyone in the band seems to be multi-instrumentalists, occasionally switching to the mandolin (for “Don't Lose Me Boy”), ukulele (for “Perfect Pitch”) or cajón (for “She's Easy on My Eyes”).

The brothers were in very fine form, and they were quite humble to the sold-out audience. Kevin adding, “Thank you for being here, we all know there are some places you could spend your heard-earned entertainment dollars.”

The cello was brought out for Michael Bacon to take lead on his “Interlude” song, which sets up nicely the medley to “493 Miles”.

The best story had to be for their song “Beneath Perfection”, which Kevin Bacon described as a title of a film he was working on. He thought if he wrote a song with that title, that they could use it for the movie. With his wife being pregnant, he wrote about how he felt about this and how imperfect he was “beneath perfection”, etc. Of course, at the punchline was that the filmmaker changed the title to “Tremors” (a cult-classic film that spawned four sequels and a television show).

New song “Picker” was described as a song written by Kevin Bacon about Michael Bacon, and required plenty of guitar picking.

Set closer was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cover of “Don't Do Me Like That”, a song that was on the encore on their last tour. And speaking of encore, it didn’t take very long before the band came back on stage to play “Only a Good Woman”. This is followed by a medley of “Peace Dance” and Kenny Loggins cover of “Footloose”.

If you didn’t know, the latter encore song was the theme song to the box office hit movie of the same name. The movie starred Kevin Bacon as a teenager who moved to a small town that banned dancing.

The Flying Lotus brought his spectacular 3-D show to First Avenue on Tuesday, August 20th, in downtown Minneapolis.

Opening the show was Salami Rose Joe Louis, a lone DJ/mixer playing on her keyboard and singing songs over melodic sound. Like all the acts, videos were shown on the big backdrop while they play. Not sure if the images were specific to the songs, but they were definitely custom made.

The Californian native was playing songs from her recently released album Zdenka 2080, available on Brainfeeder.

Between sets, PBDY (Paul Preston) was the DJ. He played about 15-20 minutes of some dance/electronic beats. The first set (after Salami Rose Joe Louis) was a little calmer, space out with lots of percussions, while the second set (after Brandon Coleman) felt more chaotic and noise-centric. The latter set probably had more to do with the crew moving and setup for Flying Lotus.

Throughout his set, the logo of Brainfeeder was on display on the backdrop. Apparently PBDY is one of the spokespersons for the music label and currently running the music collective, TAR.

Prior to Brandon Coleman (billed as Brandon Coleman Spacetalker) coming on stage, a video of “spacetalker” was shown - which turned out to be a nice tribute to Ras G (aka Gregory Shorter), one of the founders of Brainfeeder and Los Angeles Beat Scene.

Coleman only had excitement about playing at the legendary First Avenue, citing how he remembered watching Purple Rain all those years ago and how incredible it was for him to play on the same stage as Prince. He dedicated “Love” (or as announced as “Unconditional Love”) to the purple one.

Filmmaker, producer, and DJ The Flying Lotus (aka FlyLo) closed out the show.

Before we talk about show, we should mention that the 3D show was a step up from most shows. The high-res 3-D video were powered by an Alienware laptop, with the aid of a dedicated external Graphics Amplifier. Each show seemed like they were different, with the video director making small modification to the videos before the main show.

Every paying guest was given a passive 3D glasses, like the ones you get at the movie theaters. These particular glasses had Flying Lotus branding on them, making them the perfect souvenir to remember the fabulous show.

Center stage was FlyLo in his custom DJ stand, which looked like it was inspired by Katsuhiro Otomo’s cyberpunk classic Akira. Starting his set off with a video, featuring Twin Peaks creator David Lynch, playing perfectly into “Fire is Coming”.

Like all 3D shows, you really need to view the show in the center. Unfortunately, since it was really crowded, if you got in late and saw the show at the side, it’s not a great viewing experience.

It’s a real trip to see flying particles and roller coasting movements. When it’s in full effect, watching the 3D videos and hearing the music, it blows away any regular DJ sets. Let’s face it, most DJ shows aren’t that exciting, as you’re just watching some guy(s) pushing buttons and pulling knobs. The Flying Lotus shows solves this problem, making his 3D show a truly unique experience.

Electro-pop/danse wave band The Faint headlined the Fine Line Music Café on August 12th.

Opening up the show was Closeness, the project from the Faint’s singer Todd Fink with his wife Orenda Fink. Their music isn’t quite like the Faint, but more like The Knife. For example, if you listen to their song “End of the Maze”, it’s not fast-paced electro-pop/dance that you would expect from the Faint’s singer… but it felt more experimental and even thoughtful.

Since their music isn’t quite the same, it also felt weird that the lighting was very similar to The Faint’s set (very frenetic and energetic).

Speaking of lights, in contrast, Detroit’s Ritual Howls played in blood red lighting throughout their set. I was quite impressed with their very dark goth music, which sounded a bit like Peter Murphy or maybe something like She Wants Revenge, thanks to the singer’s deep vocal style.

The trio (Paul Bancell, Ben Saginaw and Chris Samuels) did not have a live drummer, instead relying on a drum machine. From my understanding, this might be the band’s first time in Minneapolis… but at the end of their set, they promised to, “see you next year”, indicating they’ll be back shortly.

As for The Faint, they are truly a great live band. It is pretty amazing that the entire band ( Todd Fink, Graham Ulicny, Dapose, and Clark Baechle), dancing their hardest throughout their entire hour plus set.

Although the tour is for their new Egowerk album (Saddle Creek), looking over their setlist, they played quite a few older classic songs, such as crowd pleasers, “The Geeks Were Right” and “Desperate Guys”.

Most of their songs sounded like straight out of their studio recording, but there were a few that they mixed it up live. One of those songs was “Take Me to the Hospital”, which started surprisingly slow (but obviously does pick up as the song builds).

“Young & Realistic” was dedicated and is about Fink’s wife, Orenda. Even if you didn’t know that, the line “Do you know if this room's under Orenda” should clue you in.

The set ended with two of The Faint’s best songs, “Worked Up So Sexual”, which Fink said this is the song that they would always play, and “we hope you like it”. This combined with closer “Paranoiattack” was a pretty good combination. Unfortunately, about 50 seconds into the closing song, they messed up and had to restart. Fink shouted out, “we only play this song every 10 years!” as they restarted again. It was incredible satisfying to hear the entire crowd “Paranoia! Paranoia! Paranoia!”

For the encore, “Child Asleep” (new song from Egowerk) and fan-favorite “Agenda Suicide” with “Glass Danse” (the latter two are from The Faint’s most important and best-known album Danse Macabre).

To close, the Faint’s fanbase is very dedicated and have supported the band throughout the years. Singer Todd Fink was very humble, stating that he would love to personally meet and talk to everyone at the show and sounded like he really meant it. If they didn’t have to go back on the tour bus for a long drive to their next venue, they would probably handshake everybody at the show.

GOG Galaxy 2.0 Closed Beta

As you know, I’m a huge GOG (Good Old Games) fan and was very excited about the news of GOG Galaxy 2.0 in June 2019. I have been using the GOG Galaxy 2.0 closed beta this past few weeks and here are some of my thoughts on it.

If you didn’t know, GOG Galaxy 2 was supposed to unite all the game launchers out there under the GOG launcher. At the time of this writing, there is only one official integration, which is Xbox. The rest, Epic, Steam, PS4, Origin, etc., are all community-created. And not all launchers are available to connect either, we’re missing some major ones like Blizzard’s Battlenet and Bethesda. I suppose you have to keep in mind that it’s still early days, and GOG is working on connections to all the major players out there… but that does mean that the problem mostly lay with the other launchers.

When everything does work, it’s beautiful. You get to see all the games you own under one area and see immediately your duplicate games or history of your game play. You can see all the games you own (I’m seeing that I own 672 across the various platforms… which is nice to know), achievements, and hours you sunk into your games.

In addition to the games, GOG also unite all your buddies and friends from across the board, and you can get a broad overview of how all your friends are doing. It also keeps track of games you recently played, as well as recent plays from other users (so you can see what’s popular with all the GOG users). It’s all very cool.

The other nice thing is that you may see games you didn’t know you own or hadn’t seen in a long time (because it’s on a launcher you rarely use).

Now for some bad news. And again, I should stress that this is still in Beta, it could change or improved by the time it’s officially launches.

First of all, your connected launchers will randomly disconnect and required you to re-log back in. I understand this is a security thing, but some launchers require more frequent passwords than others. It’s gotten to a point that it’s so annoying to put in passwords and second authentic codes that I had to disable the two-factor authentication to make it less of a pain to log into Epic every two or three days.

The other problem is that you still need those other launchers to run your games. It can get annoying, when there are multiple launchers tied to one game. For example, if I wanted to run For Honor on Epic Games, it also launches Ubisoft’s Uplay. This isn’t a problem if you’re always up-to-date on your patches, but chances are these launchers may take an additional two or three minutes to patch and update. Then, once those launchers are running, they remain running until you manually shut them down. The automatically closing down the other launchers is forthcoming, as an option you can choose, but is not available in my closed beta.

Finally, although you can connect to the two major consoles, Xbox and PS4, you can’t obviously play your games on your PC. What you can do is view your achievements and install games remotely on your primary consoles. It’s a nice feature, but it’s probably something that I probably won’t be using in the future (considering that I haven’t really used either of my consoles since I bought the Fallout iBuyPower PC in March 2019).

Hopefully, GOG will address a lot of these problems, and get official integration with the popular launchers (especially for Steam), so you won’t see these random disconnections. Plus, I’d like to see these other launchers open up and share achievements and friends (not all launchers will allow this).

It’s good to see Lilly’s name again, as she previously toured and opened up for the Bird and Bee in November 2015. … Samantha Sidley Alex Lilly opened up the show with her two helper-singers (Samantha Sidley and Inga Roberts) and Wendy Wang on guitar. They were mostly all wearing a purple sparkly dress ... and you find out later that Lilly, Sidley and Wang are also all in The Bird and the Bee's live band. …

The Bird And The Bee headlined the Turf Club in St Paul on August 11th.

Opening the show was Samantha Sidley, who thanked the audience for “breaking my touring virginity”. This is true and false, as she was on tour with The Bird and the Bee previously, but simply a backup singer. This time around, she is the lead singer and performer, directing and putting together songs to sing.

Joining Sidley on stage was multi-instrumentalist Vikram Devasthali, guitarist Alex Lilly, and Sidley’s wife Barbara Gruska on drums. All the members would later resurface as Lilly and Inara George’s backup bands/backup singers.

Sidley has only released a couple of singles, and working to release her debut album Interior Person… but already critics have already called her music “lesbian jazz”, mainly thanks to the lead single “I Like Girls”.

Like many jazz musicians, Sidley also admit that none of the songs she was singing were written by her, instead relying on Lilly or Gruska to provide the songs. She filled up the rest of her brief set with two covers, a Judy Garland song, “Over the Rainbow” (which appears on The Wizard of Oz) and a Beach Boys cover of “Busy Doin’ Nothin’” (from the album Friends).

Next up was Alex Lilly with another brief set, featuring, once again the talented Vikram Devasthali, and backup singers Samantha Sidley and Barbara Gruska (who came and went when the song required them to appear).

The last time we saw Lilly perform, she only had one album, so she basically played them all. Now she’s about to release 2% Milk, so the majority of these songs are from the new album. Plenty to love about the new songs, including “Pornographic Mind” and set closer, title track.

The Bird And The Bee took the stage shortly after. As singer Inara George would later explain, the show almost didn’t happen: “our bus broke down twice getting here!”

Again, as already previously established, co-creator Greg Kurstin was not at the show. This is because he refuses to tour, and Inara George had to clarify that the band did not break up or anything. I think by now, fans already know this is the case.

Vikram Devasthali would fill in Kurstin’s place, playing everything from trombones to acoustic to bass, etc. Similar to their Nov 2015 show, Alex Lilly and Samantha Sidley would become backup singers.

In addition to the terrible bus problems, the show started off on the wrong foot with singer Inara George saying how much she loves Minneapolis. She was immediately corrected by the crowd in front: “we’re in St Paul!” George would settle on saying how much she loves “The Twin Cities!”

To promote the forthcoming Van Halen cover lover album Interpreting the Masters Volume 2: A Tribute to Van Halen (No Expectations / Release Me Records) the group played three VH songs, “Panama”, “Runnin’ with the Devil”, and “Ain’t Talkin’”. The first of the three was song by Samantha Sidley, because George played the trombones.

Overall, you can tell that these ladies (Inara George, Alex Lilly, and Samantha Sidley) loved touring and love meeting their fans. They certainly enjoyed the last time they were in town (in 2015), so you can bet they’ll be back in the area for a future tour.

Technically there wasn’t an encore, but rather the rest of the band leaves the stage, while Inara George stay on to play requests. She would facetime Greg Kurstin to keep him in as part of the show.

R.I.P. Peter Fonda

The Easy Rider, himself, Peter Fonda has died at the age of 79. Fonda is from a family of famous actors, as the son of Henry Fonda (whose The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles is named after), brother of Jane Fonda, and father of actress/singer Bridget Fonda.

While most people might know Peter Fonda as an actor, he did dabble in being a singer after a recording of a 7” in 1966 called “November Night”, backed with “Catch the Wind” (a Donovan cover).

Fonda also starred in the film Outlaw Blues, which is about a musician, and as a result required him to sing with co-star Susan Saint James for the film. The two songs from this film “Outlaw Blues” and “I Dream of Highways” appear as a 7” from Capitol Records.

Also, notably, The Primal Scream sampled Peter Fonda from The Wild Angels 1966 film as the intro to their song, “Loaded” (which the film The World's End used to good effect at the film’s start).

We’ve always liked these guys, and fairly excited about their new song “Mister Impossible”, which was a song that they’ve had an idea of it for a long time. After building their studio called Harmony West in Laurel Canyon, they put together the song in their own space. The song finalized last spring when they took it to Joshua Tree.

The annual Minnesota State Fair is back, this year running August 22 to Labor Day, September 2nd. I won’t be listing every bands set to attend, but the major ones. Please note in addition to the concert ticket, you’ll also need to spend an entry fee into the fair.

We don’t go every year, as it’s very expensive to attend. On top of the entry fee, the fried foods are marked up - so for a family of four, you’re looking to drop over $150 easily. Personally speaking, I rather take that money and go to smaller concerts or buy yourself some CDs or DVDs.

The last time we went was on Labor Day in Sep 2017, because we had the day off work.

The Bacon Brothers is back at the Dakota Jazz Club this Wednesday, August 21st. If you didn’t know, Kevin Bacon and Michael Bacon are passionate about their music, even though many people might only know Kevin Bacon as simply an actor.

We caught the brothers in July 2018 and wrote, “As the group play their ever-changing setlist, they kept adding various instruments in their shows. But it’s for the love of their songs, that the band brought on a cello to play an untitled interlude song, or mandolin for “Driver”, or bongos for “Don’t Lose Me Boy”, or four ukuleles for “Perfect Pitch”, or banging on the Peruvian cajón for a love song devoted to their “Bus”. Speaking from someone who attends a lot of shows, most bands make up the setlist based on what instruments they have with them. Meaning, if a song requires a strange instrument, it might be dropped from their set because they don’t want to bring it on tour. It’s a practical logic, but apparently not for the Bacon Brothers! You have to love them for that.”
