Celebrating pride month, German-born, Los Angeles-based pop singer Kim Petras headlined the sold-out Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Friday night, June 21st. As soon as the doors opened, a massive crowd of young fans staked out the coveted front of the stage. The fanbase of mostly LGBTQ wasn’t a surprise, as Petras found herself as a pioneer when she became one of the youngest people to undergo a gender transition at the age of 16. This was a huge deal, because, at the time, in Germany, you had to be at least 18 to undergo this process.
Matthew Mazur or better known by his DJ stagename Mazurbate opened the show. Traditional opening band requires 20-30 minutes to change and setup for the next band, but since it’s just a DJ setup, Mazurbate decided to start (and end) his set late (starting at nearly 9pm rather than the original 8:45 announced time). Like I said, it didn’t matter, because Mazurbate’s setup hardly required much to add and remove from the main stage… and he was able to vamoose with minutes to spare for Kim Petras’ team to take over.
With typical DJ shows, you’re not really watching the DJ, but rather dancing to the music. Mazurbate started his set with the Charli XCX’s “Boys” and kept the crowd moving throughout his nearly 50-min long set. He played it safe and stuck to mostly pop songs like Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been”, but the most surprising song on his mix was The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” (which had a massive reaction from the audience). I’ve heard that song covered by so many young musicians, and it’s always a favorite.
Kim Petras came on stage shortly after the countdown intro, with the same Beat/DJ that tour with her in October 2018. Unlike her opening slot, Petras, now as headliner, had a full hour plus set to pick her songs, theme, and full control.
All of her singles, that she previously released online (“I Don’t Want It at All”, “Heart to Break”, “Feeling of Falling”, “1,2,3 Dayz Up”, etc.) were all really well-known to her fans. Almost every song was greeted with the audience singing back to every word.
With help from Dr. Luke (who produced Petra’s latest project, Clarity) and Charli XCX (“Unlock It” features Kim Petras and Jay Park), you can tell that the future is really bright for Kim Petras. Looking at the entire sold-out North American tour, this Fine Line Music Café appearance may be the smallest venue that Petras will likely ever play.
