Leon at Fine Line
Leon Setlist
|
Swedish singer/songwriter Léon is currently touring in support of her debut self-titled album… selling out the Fine Line Music Café in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday, April 30th.
Opening up the show was rising alt/pop singer Morgan Saint. Like her last local appearance (in October 2018), she’s joined by Tommy on keys and Dan on drums… the only difference is that her hair’s blond now.
The other change is that her setlist’s been upgrade to a few new songs, among them the new single, “God Bless Our Souls” and something called “I’m All Good” (as written on the setlist).
The Long Island born and raised, Morgan Saint is still a very new young artist, as she’s only released two EPs, her debut 17 Hero and follow-up Alien (released last year on Epic Records), but already her sad, vulnerable songs have critics like New Yorker, Vogue, and Time, praising the gender-defying singer. Paper even went so far as proclaiming her among “100 Women Revolutionizing Pop”, which is such a feat to consider how young she is.
With a limited 30-min set, Saint had little to say between songs, sometime mentioning how personal the songs are to her. Again, “Glass House” remains her most personal song she’s ever written, as the song is about being broken and needing someone to really understand.
She ended her set with her most well-known song, “Just Friends”, asking if anyone knew the lyrics could help her close out the set on a high note.
We first caught Léon (stylized as LÉON), in August 2016, before her Spotify Singles and after her debut EP Treasure… so she was fairly new to the music scene. That still didn’t stop her from debuting on The Late Late Show with James Cordon, a huge boost for the Swedish singer to the American audience.
Even back in 2016, she tried her hand at covering Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”, which she noted is “one of my favorite songs- I listened to this, like every day”. Of course, as her favorite song of all time, she worked the song in her 2017 set: “I love Stevie Nicks, I think she’s one of the best singers of all time.”
On this current set, she incorporated “Dreams” with her song “Body”, which seemed to work out well, because both versions had a stripped-down piano chord driving the song. You can hear how well the two songs medley together on this youtube clip.
Léon’s fanbase can only grow at this point, but I feel the only thing holding her back are there are so many other Leon names out there (Kings Of Leon, Leon Bridges, Leon III), so it might be hard for her to stand out from the confusion. It probably doesn’t matter, as based on hearing fans singing back lyrics to her songs, such as her two biggest hits, “Tired of Talking” and “Surround Me” (saved for the encore).
