Debi Martini (aka Connie Champagne and E.Z.Wider), the punk rock singer and bassist for the legendary all-female punk band The Red Aunts (pronounced as “red ants”) has died on January 17th, 2019. The band formed in 1991 in Long Beach, California, and broke up in 1998 with the release of Ghetto Blaster on Epitaph Records.
The band re-formed years later and played on and off throughout the past few years.
Martini’s death came directly from the band, announcing January 17, 2019 at 1:07 PM: “With tremendous sadness we are heart broken to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of our sister and friend Debi . She was our rock goddess and our anchor and we will always treasure our time together and all that we accomplished . Thank you to all our friends and fans - we love you forever . If you would like to send a message please email theredaunts[at]gmail.com and we will share with Debi’s family and friends . We are devastated . We love you Debi .
Xo,
Terri , Kerry and Lesley”
Also, The Germs’ bassist Lorna Doom died on January 16, at the age of 60. I have a little regret of not watching the documentary What We Do is Secret (which is about the band). It’s not the first film about the band, in fact, they were also featured in The Decline of Western Civilization.
With only one album, (GI) in 1979, The Germs’ album was declared as one of the “Greatest Punk Albums of All Time”, according to Rolling Stone.
The Germs broke up in December 1980 with the suicide by heroin overdose of singer Darby Crash.
