You know I’m a massive Radiohead fan. In fact, I famously have told this story about my days as a radio DJ at KFSR 90.7FM and I had an opportunity to interview Radiohead during The Bends promotion. I wrote all my questions for either singer Thom Yorke or guitarist Jonny Greenwood... and when we went live on the radio - I got Phil Selway! It was so funny, I had to throw out all my questions and had to improvised. I’ll never forget it, and somehow I love Radiohead even more.

When I bought Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser in 2008, I wrote, “It would seem that the main reason behind why they left rock-pop music behind was because singer Thom Yorke's taste in music have drastically changed since OK Computer. Despite releasing three electronic albums (pre-In Rainbows), Yorke continues to write songs that doesn't quite fit into the Radiohead universe.”

Yorke, with Nigel Godrich and visual artist Tarik Barri, will be performing Yorke’s solo works for this upcoming show. If you’re going to the show expecting Radiohead songs - don’t bother! Still, if you love Radiohead and Thom Yorke, you should be there, at least to honor what he’s done to the world of music.

British cellist and producer Oliver Coates will be opening the show. Coates previously worked with Radiohead, so it made sense that he’s been asked to support Thom Yorke on this tour. Oliver Coates’ third solo album Shelley’s on Zenn-La is out now. If you pick up the album, you should be happy to know that portion of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to Down’s Syndrome Scotland, an organization supporting people with Down’s syndrome.

Michal Menert (of Pretty Fantastics) is playing a solo show at The Exchange on December 6 in support of his new Pretty Fantastics album From the Sea. Again, this isn’t the full band, but knowing Menert’s expertise in production and jazz, it should be fine.

According to Menert, his brother Manic Focus will be joining him on these solo shows.

Haley Bonar, now simply Haley (stylized in all caps HALEY) is playing the Cedar Cultural Center in support of her new album Pleasureland. I understand the reason for the name change (she recently reverted back to her maternal family name of McCallum), but I’m actually not a fan of the one-name thing (especially because there is a punk band called Haley from Philadelphia and EDM singer called Haley... and it’s close enough to Halsey!)

Name change or not, we still like Haley’s music.

The Halestorm and In This Moment co-headlining tour will stop by the Armory in Minneapolis this Saturday, December 8th.

We previously saw Halestorm in July 2014 and said, “The band wasted little time in entrancing the crowd, as it opened with radio hit, ‘I Miss the Misery’ from previous album, The Strange Case of… (Atlantic Records). Lzzy Hale was adorned in all black- sleeveless top, leather pants and matching eye liner, while younger brother Arjay banged (and climbed) the drums behind her with restless manic energy.”

Special guest New Years Day will open. The hard rock band’s new music video/single “Disgust Me” came out recently... taken from their new EP Diary of a Creep (RED Music).

As many of you are aware, we’ve been massive Stars fans since the Nightsongs LP in 2001. Over the many years of seeing the Canadian band, we’ve come to understand that the band doesn’t really play music from their first album (understandable since so many bands have grown up and evolved beyond their initial sound). However... with this upcoming Winter tour, the band have asked fans to pick their encore songs. Which means if enough fans want it, they can demand those heartfelt early songs! It should be interesting to see what songs they play on this upcoming show at First Avenue.

Show up early to check out My Brightest Diamond (aka Shara Nova). The singer just dropped her new album A Million And One on November 23rd on Rhyme & Reason Records. She’s currently touring Europe with Ian Chang and will debut with Stars at First Avenue on December 2nd.

We previously caught the musician in November 2014 and wrote, “ Somewhat heavy stuff, but it was the basis of My Brightest Diamond’s set and was referred to a few times during the evening, which gave additional enlightenment for Worden’s song selections. The singer/multi-instrumentalist was dressed in all-white suit and moved deftly from keyboard to guitar and back, as the evening progressed, with more than able support from rhythmic sidemen, Nathan Lithgow (bass) and Tim Mulvenna (drums).”

Remember Danity Kane? The original all-girls five-piece was massive when they first appeared in Making the Band 3 television show in 2004. Currently, the girl group is down to three (Aubrey O'Day, Dawn Richard, and Shannon Bex) and fans know them as simply DK. Originally the 2018 did not include Minneapolis, but all of that has changed with this upcoming show at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on December 3rd.

If you show up early, one of the girls, Dawn Richard, will open as Dawn (or formerly stylized as D∆WN). Her opening set will focus on her forthcoming, yet-to-be-announced new solo record.

Creator, writer and host of Adam Ruins Everything on truTV, Adam Conover will be on tour called The Mind Parasites Live Tour this month. Conover will stop by the Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis on December 5th. This should be a fun time for fans of comedy or Conover’s show.

Constantine: City of Demons - The Movie (UHD/Blu-Ray)

I’m a big fan of John Constantine, so I was disappointed (but anticipated) that NBC cancelled the series. Of course, I also knew that the show producers and DC Comics (now DC Entertainment) wanted to bring the series to another outlet, possibly The CW, since they already had a string of successful DC shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.

Constantine did live on The CW, but as a streaming-only format animated show as Constantine: City of Demons in April 2018, but we didn’t like the advertisements every five minutes.

Thankfully, all those segments are collected into one long 90-min ad-free Bluray/UHD release, re-titled Constantine: City of Demons - The Movie with a Rated R rating. To make it a full movie, 20 minutes have been added to the movie.

As for special features, there’s also a documentary “The Sorcerer’s Occultist - Understanding John Constantine” and the WonderCon Constantine Panel.

Unless you’re a massive Constantine fan, I wouldn’t recommend paying full retail price for the disc(s), but on sale for $7.99 (which is the current Black Friday sale price) - it’s almost an impulse item. All physical disc copies comes with a digital code (expires Dec 2019).

As for a live-action Constantine show, it would seem that Matt Ryan, starring as John Constantine, has been added to the regular cast of The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow. Although the series is somewhat silly at times, it’s kind of nice to see Constantine back on the small screen.

I did give up on the Legends of Tomorrow show after season one, but have started watching the show again this year, thanks to the addition of Constantine to the roster.

Ireland’s platinum-selling band Kodaline will be returning to Minneapolis at the Varsity Theater on Monday, November 26th. The band (singer Steve Garrigan, guitarist Mark Prendergast, bassist Jason Boland and drummer Vinny May) is touring in support of their new album Politics of Living (Sony Music UK/RCA Records).

The last time we saw the band, it was in October 2015, and we said, “We’ve been fans of, and have followed Irish quartet Kodaline, since they started coming to the Twin Cities over three years ago as openers; with an increasing fan base (especially locally), this was their third time in Minneapolis in 2015 alone! Clearly the band love playing here...”

Ocean Park Standoff will be opening the US tour.

Yukon Blonde and The Zolas are co-headlining a North American 2018 tour. They will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on Monday, November 26th.

We saw Yukon Blonde in Nov 2015 and mentioned, “Yukon Blonde, based in Vancouver, had played the Twin Cities and this club in particular before, though in 2011 as the headliner. At that time they were touring in support of their first self-titled album and their subsequent EP Fire/Water, and their sound could only be described as bright, almost unbearably catchy indie pop. Their music was characterized by great hooks and beautiful harmonies.”

We attended the Sound+Vision Pop Culture Collectibles show at the Valley Creek Mall in Woodbury, Minnesota, on Saturday, November 17. The show is free and takes place three times a year (Spring, Summer, Fall).

I am only guessing, but about 25 dealers line up along the hallway of Woodbury’s only indoor mall, Valley Creek Mall, from one end to the other. There was great foot traffic, with some people going to the show intentionally and some people there by happenstance.

Dealers sold everything from comic books to music (vinyls were the most popular), toys, sports cards/memorabilia, original art, movies, etc. If you collect something, chances are you might find it at the show. Prices were reasonable, nothing more than what you would pay full price.

The best part of this show is that every hour there were prizes given out. We like free stuff, so were pretty excited to see some free promotional items like posters (Ant-Man and the Wasp, plus various others), pencils (Sorry to Bother You), upcoming movie passes (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), movie downloads (Incredibles 2), shot glasses (Atomic Blonde), T-Shirts (Skyscraper and a few others that were snatched up before I saw it)… plus many others that I’m forgetting or never saw.

The next Sound+Vision will take place on a Saturday in Spring 2019 from 9am to 3pm. Date to be announced on soundvisionmn.webs.com.

Arcade1Up Cabinet

Read More Games Pathfinder: Kingmaker is not out yet, but I was so excited about this game coming out on GOG that I pre-ordered it. This game is based on the Pathfinder tabletop game, which was and offspring of Dungeon and Dragons…

Ever since the arcades went away, I’ve always wanted my own personal arcade cabinet. A few weeks ago, I saw these Arcade1Up boxes at Walmart, and looking at the box art, they appear to be “full sized” cabinets for $300!

After doing more research and contemplating on the pricing, I’ve decided that it’s actually a good deal to buy a Street Fighter 2 cabinet.

Putting the cabinet together was pretty easy to follow, thanks to the pre-drilled holes and easy-to-follow instruction book. All the parts are clearly labeled, and anyone with a Phillips screw driver can put it together in under 30 minutes.

Some minor complaints:

The ball joystick could be like later generation Street Fighter 2 fight sticks that I remember (they were more sensitive to movement and was a little taller).

The other complaint is that it’s actually not a full-size cabinet, but rather a 3/4 scale. To solve these complaints, Arcade1Up actually released a branded riser to lift the cabinet up to about five feet… which will set you back about $40-$80, depending on where you buy it.

Some praises:

The artwork is beautiful and high quality. It’s brand new and faithfully reproduced from the original Street Fighter 2 cabinets by Capcom.

Joystick and six buttons configuration - it’s how SF2 was meant to be played! Spacing is good, and includes a second six button for a challenger!

After some research, I found out that the suggested retail price to these cabinets are $400. Most stores were pre-selling them at $400 (originally published pricing of $500), but then Walmart announced they were selling it at $300 - forcing the other stores to match the $300 price. I wish they were cheaper, but you have to think that the margin is already thin at $300 if the markup price was originally $400 or more.

I do have my eye on the next Capcom cabinet (Final Fight, Ghost n Goblins, Strider, and 1944: Loop Master)…. And I also want both the Galaga cabinet (Walmart is selling these for $250 as a Black Friday sale) and Pac-Man (for the classic artwork).

UPDATE: After watching and reading about these Arcade1Up from collectors who owns original arcades, some agreed that old cabinets are very expensive, heavy, and requires a lot of maintenance of aging obsolete technology (CRT monitors). One guy said it took two guys to carry a 200 pound machine up one flight of stairs and it nearly destroyed him. Imagine having to move two or three arcade machines? One of the benefit of a smaller Arcade1Up is that it's only about 60lbs, and a grown person can move it around easily. The other nice thing about the Arcade1Up is that pricing at $300 is fair, some people said it's cheap compared to $1,000 for a real machine... Still, we'd all like it to be cheaper.

As for the ball joystick, you can buy replacement "bat" top styling and easily replace the ball. The batstyle is only about $5 each, so it's reasonably priced.

The other complaint a lot of people have mentioned is that they wish the marquee would light up. It is a cost-savings issue, so I understand why they didn't include it with this initial release. I would love Arcade1Up to offer a more expensive "deluxe" version that lights up or comes with a taller frame (instead of having to buy an extra "Riser" to lift it up to standing level)... because I would shell out an extra $50 to get those things built in.

We got the announcement that legendary “superpicker” Roy Clark has died at the age of 85 due to complications from pneumonia at home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He’s probably best known for the being the host of the longest-running syndicated show in television history Hee Haw, even though he was already famous being for being one of the first cross-over pop and country musician.

He was always smiling, and the reason why: “A TV camera goes right through your soul. If you’re a bad person, people pick that up. I’m a firm believer in smiles. I used to believe that everything had to be a belly laugh. But I’ve come to realize that a real sincere smile is mighty powerful.”

Roy is survived by Barbara, his wife of sixty-one years, his sons Roy Clark II and wife Karen, Dr. Michael Meyer and wife Robin, Terry Lee Meyer, Susan Mosier and Diane Stewart, and his grandchildren: Brittany Meyer, Michael Meyer, Caleb Clark, Josiah Clark and his sister, Susan Coryell.

A memorial celebration will be held in the coming days in Tulsa.

Local favorites Hippo Campus will be playing a double night at the Palace this November 23-24. The band just released their sophomore album Bambi.

We’ve seen the band several times, including one from March 2017, and we can safely describe them as simply amazing: “As soon as the band took the stage, a hundred cellphones went up in the air to record every moment of the band.”

Other local favorites Now, Now will open. Legendary Marvel Universe creator Stan Lee has died at the age of 95.

Lee, along with Jack Kirby were responsible for many of the original Marvel Comics’ characters, such as The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, and X-Men, etc.

Although Stan Lee is not necessary a musician, many singers and songwriters have been influenced by Stan Lee or many of his creations. For example, Joe Satriani’s classic album Surfing with the Alien features Stan and Jack’s Silver Surfer on his cover. Or bands like The Ramones covering the Spider-Man theme song, etc.

I actually have played a bit of this game via PS4, and I can confirm you can play the single player campaign without the need of PlayStation Plus.

Microsoft's XBox is giving away a couple of free games. The first is part of their free multiplayer celebration this weekend (November 8-11), you can grab PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (aka PUBG) and Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 (aka PES 2019) for free to all XBox Live members (not just Gold members).

Although you do own the game, it may be useless if you don't actually have Xbox Gold, since those games requires the subscription to play.

Also, Crackdown is free. The 2007 game can be played on both Xbox One (via backward compatibility) and Xbox 360, you can get it here microsoft.com.

With the free games from MicroSoft, I’d say they are winning. Sony is too cheap to give away any games on their popular PS4 (unless you pay for PlayStation Plus, of course).
