For something called Wrong, everything on this night seemed so very right—
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club returned to the concert stage on their Wrong Tour at a crowded First Avenue Mainroom, for a performance that again answered their own music question, ‘Whatever Happened to my Rock ‘n Roll?’
The evening got started at a volume level of eleven as Dallas psych-rock trio Night Beats roared out with an impressive forty-five minute support set that left ears ringing and mouths agape. The group’s (Danny "Lee Blackwell" Billingsley- vocals/guitar; Jonah Swilley– drums; Jakob Bowden – bass) latest full length is 2016’s timely-named Who Sold My Generation (Heavenly Recordiings) and helps make the strong case for Texas remaining the psych-rock capital, channeling forefathers of the genre like 13th Floor Elevators and The Red Krayola, while putting a twist on things to call their sound all their own.
Amongst dim lighting and full of echo, reverb, and delay, the trio even put Bo Diddley’s ‘Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut’ from 1964 through their psych-rock transformation machine, keeping its rolling bassline intact, but amp-ing up the guitar sound and with the vocals sung in a trippy, transcending way.
Songs like ‘H-Bomb’ and ‘No Cops’ gut-punched with such fire and fury that many in the crowd were visibly surprised with such brash fierceness from a support act, but also likely left as newfound fans.
While you were already in peril if you forgot ear plugs after the opener, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club might have made you wish you brought sunglasses, as their light show went from low level blues, pale reds and purples, to all-out strobe lights, set along a stage landscape of rolling dry ice fog.
The Bay Area trio (Peter Hayes- vocal, guitar, harmonica; Robert Levon Been- vocal, bass, guitar; Leah Shapiro- drums) has been perfecting this presentation and their accompanying music since the late ‘90s with eighth studio album, Wrong Creatures (Vagrant Records) out just last month.
The two-hour headlining set began with the new ‘Spook’ and never really let up, the alt-garage noise rockers taking the crowd on a musical journey through their twenty years of existence.
Showcasing the new tracks continued with the literally breathless ‘Little Thing Gone Wild’ (Been noticeably exhaling at song’s end) and ‘King of Bones’ before the swamp blues of ‘Beat the Devil’s Tattoo’ and ‘Ain’t No Easy Way’ both stomped in, with Hayes strumming guitar and blowing harp concurrently.
The brooding new ‘Question of Faith’ purposely wanders about, asking “What leads you in the nights, just a question of right” while ‘Circus Bazooko’ adds some trippy whimsy with its calliope-esque organ anchoring the song.
Been took time mid-set for a brief two-song solo acoustic break, saying their new record was recorded at California’s Sunset Sound, the same location Purple Rain was mixed, before cueing his keyboard up for a stripped ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’, “God bless Minneapolis” he said, finishing the song. After an odd shout-out to the small town of New York Mills, MN a stripped down version of BRMC’s 2005 song, ‘Fault Line’ sounded as bare and poignant as Rick Rubin-produced Johnny Cash.
The band re-emerged for the bluesy ‘Shuffle Your Feet’, getting things really going with 2001’s ‘Love Burns’, then slowed things down for the piano-driven ‘All Rise’ before ending the main set again back to a cut from their debut album, with ‘Spread Your Love’.
The longest song on the new record, ‘Ninth Configuration’ began their two-song encore, a dreamy journey that muses philosophically aloud, before feedback introduced the band’s biggest hit, ‘Whatever Happened to My Rock 'n' Roll (Punk Song)’, ending things as crowd members jumped about with arms raised in the air.
Out of the darkness and fog, there is still light… and noise, as again evidenced by the sonic barrage that is still Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, continuing to bring their unapologetic blend of no-holds rock to audiences everywhere after two decades.

It was a top of the world moment as Kimbra played a crowded Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, previewing her upcoming new album and setting the stage for bigger things from the artist, in the year ahead.
The evening got an experimental start from electro trio Arc Iris, a project that bloomed from former Low Anthem member Jocie Adams (vocals, guitar), adding in Zach Tenorio Miller (keys) and Ray Belli (drums), and in support of recent releases Moon Saloon (ANTI- Records) and their covering of Joni Mitchell’s entire classic album, Blue.
Their style is an eclectic mix of electro driven, experimental indie pop sounds, as evidenced on previous single, ‘Kaleidoscope’, which takes the essence of its 70’s folk and pop elements, twists them slightly, and updates the sound for the modern palate. Adams’ art pop seems to echo Mitchell’s line in ‘A Case of You’- “love is touching souls”, which is what they’re trying to achieve through their own music.
In the middle slot was Los Angeles-based KING, (not to be confused with 80’s UK pop band of the same name) an R&B electronic dream pop trio that has its roots in South Minneapolis, as that’s where twin sisters Paris and Amber Strother are from, with Anita Bias completing the group. Prince took notice of the group early on, having them open for him at the LA Forum, and well as at Paisley Park a handful of times for one of those legendary late night parties.
The Grammy-nominated We Are King (King Creative Records) is the group’s latest, with many of the performed songs culled from the release, including ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Native Land’, with the trio adding in ‘The Story’, the first song they worked on and an extended version of which, appears on the latest album.
The stage had been set all night for a conceptual audio/visual experience unlike the venue has seen before, with a large projection screen backdrop and sets of lighted vertical bars (resembling a jail cell) that would encase her two sideman, as Kimbra took to the stage for her eighty-two minute headlining set.
The new album is called Primal Heart (Warner Bros Records) and is out on 20 April (after being pushed back from January) and the loyal audience was treated to a generous portion of the new material, as well as previous favorites as the set began with a series of bleeps, bloops, projected patterns, sequentially lit poles, and the new ‘Version of Me’.
Her music can be best described as a modern melting pot- part electro, some R&B/dance, and art/dream pop, with a voice that can coo and yelp like Kate Bush one moment, emote like Imogen Heap the next, and raise to the rafters on command.
Veering from the printed setlist, first solo hit ‘Settle Down’ was bumped to the third song played, with its tempo changed to slower and more reflective, and filled with sounds from her electronic ephemera.
“Are you guys down for some new music?” she mused, going next into new album opener ‘The Good War’ as the screens filled with patterned warplanes arching across the somber sky. ‘Love in High Places’ from 2014’s The Golden Echo seeks to unify through music in this current world of division and the crowd was completely quiet for the low electronic knocks that began and ended ‘Everybody Knows’.
Kimbra returned to her songwriting roots, taking up the guitar for an acoustic and tender ‘Past Love’ with the set of widescreen music becoming much more danceable during ‘Two Way Street’, played about two-thirds through. ‘Sweet Relief’ was built around a funky bassline and a didgeridoo-like drone began the set-closing ‘Top of the World’ with Kimbra half-rapping the lyrics, saying “I knew this would be fun, Minneapolis!” as she introduced the song.
The encore began with another insight into her craft as Kimbra emerged solo for the new ’Real Life’, playing it in almost demo form, and as it appears on the new album, using looping effects to magnify her voice to choir-like levels.
After participating in the Prince Tribute concert and joining The Revolution more recently at First Avenue, there was probably no way she couldn’t honor Prince at this show, choosing to play a just-rehearsed version of 2004’s ‘Call My Name’ (“the first Prince record I ever heard was Musicology” she said in her song intro {...yes, I feel old) alongside Arc Iris, to end the show solemnly and dignified.
With a new album imminent, a fully realized stage show, and vocal chops to match, look for Kimbra to play even bigger venues as the record releases and gains momentum, ever expanding her electronic pop sound palette, while still showing things close to her primal heart.

I’m in the middle of a massive inventory all of my comics (so far, I have entered in 4,200 comics and I’m only half way). I haven’t looked at some of these comic boxes in over ten years, but looking at some of these covers, it’s a fun trip down memory lane.
I started collecting in 1984 with Crisis on Infinite Earths #1 and have been a dedicated fan ever since. I did stop buying monthlies when the average singles were $2.99 (it’s now $3.99)… much more than the $0.60 to $0.75 cents when I started collecting. There’s an argument to be made though, comic books published today are printed on better paper, and thanks to digital, the colors and letterings are much cleaner and readable.
Anyway, two of the books I ran across were these signed Deathmate Tour Books at Heroes Comics & Cards in Fresno, California, on August 14, 1993. The funny thing is that the Deathmate Tour Bus broke down on their way to Fresno, so, according to my friend in line with me, he said that the signing was delayed by six hours! We’ll just take his word for it, as it’s established that I have poor memory (and in fact, did not remember my friend in line with me). Anyway, by the time the bus did arrive to the comic book store, it was dark, and there were probably only 10-20 fans left.
The Deathmate crew were just so grateful to see any fans that they gave us the Deathmate Tour Books with the Certificate of Authenticity for free. The autographs shown are by Brandon Peterson, Dan Panosian, Sal Regla, John Ostrander, Dan Fraga, Jimmy Palmiotti, J. Scott Campbell, Joe Quesada, and Jorge Gonzalez.
Joe Quesada, J. Scott Campbell (as Jeffery Scott), Jimmy Palmiotti, and Brandon Peterson, are probably some of the (now) best known artists in the group. I was also surprised to see John Ostrander on this tour (he wrote Legends with art by John Byrne as the “sequel” to Crisis and introduced the then-new Justice League of America).
Quesada, as you know, was the most beloved and longest-serving Marvel Comics editor-in-chief, other than Stan Lee.
Just to give you the backstory on Deathmate, this was the company cross-over event between two rising comic companies at the time: Image Comics and Valiant Comics. The event would go down as a disaster, with all of Image’s comics not shipping on time. Despite the epilogue issue having a February 1994 cover date, Wikipedia suggests the actual shipping date were delayed, by as much as six months. Former Valiant editor-in-chief, Bob Layton, recounts having to fly to Los Angeles and literally sit on Liefeld’s doorstep until Liefeld finished his penciled art for the Deathmate Prologue, and who then inked the artwork himself in an Anaheim hotel room.
In an interview with Todd McFarlane interview by Larry Marder from Image Comics: The Road to Independence (TwoMorrows Publishing), regarding the Deathmate, McFarlane said that the long delays of the Deathmate books forced them to put in place the ability to return unsold books if they were delayed. Here’s what McFarlane had to say about the Deathmate Tour:
Deathmate was thought up by those guys [Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and Marc Silvestri], and (Joe) Quesada was part of it too. People forget that now. But I’m not here to dump on Joe. Deathmate took advantage of the popularity of the creators and the characters of the two hottest new companies and attempted to team them up. Steve Massaraky, who was the head of Valiant at the time, came up with the idea of getting a tour bus and putting these guys out on tour, and they were touring and promoting a book that nobody had drawn. It was insane.
In all of my years of collecting comics, I’ve never seen anything else that came close to the Deathmate Tour, and it’s a signing that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.

Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has died on Friday, February 9th, as confirmed by his manager. He was 48.
We caught Jóhannsson on a rare U.S. tour in October 2016 and wrote, “we are very lucky to have caught Jóhannsson on this truly unique tour.” Those words, now have a deeper meaning… as we think about how truly, truly incredibly grateful to have seen him in person.
Tim Husom, Jóhannsson’s manager provided the following statement:
“I’m so very sad. Today, I lost my friend who was one of the most talented musicians and intelligent people I knew. We came a long way together.”
The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency provided the following statement:
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our client and dear friend Jóhann Jóhannsson, whose great talent, humility and kindness enriched our lives immeasurably. His music has inspired many new generations of filmmakers and composers. He will be so greatly missed by his Gorfaine/Schwartz family as well as the entire film music community.”

As you know, since the Oasis break up, Noel has been releasing music under the Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds name. His latest album Who Built the Moon landed #1 in the UK charts, and the critics are calling the record “best album yet”.

Breakout British artist Jade Bird confirmed that she will be heading to SXSW 2018.
The tour dates come on the heels of the release of Jade’s latest single “Lottery,” which MTV hailed, “Jade Bird gives Joni Mitchell a run for her money on this beautiful new single.”
We caught Jade Bird in
November 2017 and wrote, “London alt-country singer-songwriter Jade Bird in support of her first EP, Something American (Glassnote Records) , released in July.
Bird has a delightful and somewhat cheeky demeanor, with a vocal twang similar in parts to Jake Bugg (enough so that they should collaborate and call themselves A Bird and a Bugg) and started with the strumming ‘Run and Hide’ and bluesy ‘I’ll Be There’.”

LADY BIRD
ladybird.movie
The feel-good coming-of-age film Lady Bird, starring Saoirse Ronan, is a big sleeper hit. What’s even cooler is the outstanding soundtrack, featuring our favorites The Monkees and
Alanis Morissette, among others.
Writer and director Greta Gerwig personal wrote letters to artists she had in mind for the film—including Morissette and Dave Matthews—to expressly ask for their blessing to use their songs in Lady Bird.
Naturally, the film went on to win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, and Ronan took home the award for Best Actress, Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. The New York Film Critics Circle named Lady Bird 2017's Best Film and Ronan the year's Best Actress, while the National Board of Review placed Lady Bird in the year's Top 10 Films, named Gerwig Best Director, and named Metcalf Best Supporting Actress.

BIRDS OF PASSAGE

New Zealand’s Birds of Passage (aka Alicia Merz) is back after four years of silence.
The ambient, minimalist, experimental project Birds of Passage will be releasing
The Death of Our Invention on March 30th via Denovali Records.
Headphone Commute explains it, “Alicia presents us with an endearing invitation into her fragile world, a captivating journey through the landscapes of her emotional euphoria and agony, a further commitment to musical experimentation… The cold minimalist-drones, distorted field recordings, and sparse instrumentation, illustrate an icy, desolate and dark world. It’s as if we are listening to the sound of winter itself; an audio exposure to the unforgiving elements of winter.”

Salt Lake City-based duo Eagle Twin (guitarist/singer Gentry Densley and drummer
Tyler Smith) is excited to be releasing their third album The Thundering Heard (Songs Of Hoof And Horn) on March 30th via Southern Lord.

The record begins with the hoofed and horned animals of our world running from mountains and forests on fire. Eerily harkening to the recent events in California and the massive devastation by fire across the land.”

…
|
|
Over the weekend, Amazon ran a promotional price drop for their Echo Show, selling for $149 instead of its normal retail price of $229, as part of the Super Bowl commercial. I thought it was such a good deal, that I ended up buying two (one for myself and one as a gift).
The main reason I needed two was to utilize its ability to video call each device (or if you trust the other person, you can enable “drop in”). I don’t really think it’s all that intrusive, especially if you have your device in a kitchen or public area. By default, the drop in feature is disabled.
At first, I wasn’t quite sure what Echo Show was all about, but it took a while for me to really appreciate it. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Echo Show, at least in the way I’m using it, is more or less a clock with a digital picture frame and weather at a glance. Think of it as a really smart (and expensive) clock.
Here’s a daily scenario, in the morning, when you’re making coffee, you can ask Alexa to show your daily news flash. Depending on what “skills” or features you enable, it will show your daily commute (you must set up your work destination location), weather, and various recent news clippings.
Here’s another scenario, you can ask Alexa for a recipe… especially useful if you have it set up in the kitchen. If you have the Echo Show in the living, you can probably ask it for television listing. Or perhaps settle an argument by asking Alexa for the answer. If you’re bored, you can always ask it for a joke.
Like the other Amazon’s Echoes, the Echo Show it does have excellent speakers. At maximum, it’s loud, without sounding distorted, and has excellent bass. The microphones will pick up the “Alexa” wake word anywhere in the room, providing you say it loud enough and not mumble. I believe this was done by incorporating several microphones around the device, so that you can be in front or back and it will “hear” you.
Although I don’t have Alexa-enabled cameras or “smart lights”, I can easily see how the Echo Show can work with these devices. Amazon suggest you can use it as a baby monitoring viewer, or better yet, use it to see various smart security cameras. Very cool, if you think about it, it’s something I plan on looking into at a later time.
Now for some things I don’t like about the Echo Show. It’s ugly and it’s very heavy. I suppose that’s fine since you’re not going to be moving it around and you’re not look at its backside.
The 7-inch screen is too small to really enjoy watching a movie on it… unfortunately, there’s no output option to “cast” or HDMI-out to a larger screen. I would love the ability to hook up the Show to a bigger monitor.
The other thing is, to really unlock the Echo Show, you need the $100 annual Amazon Prime service.
Prime will let you use their digital photos and gives you access to Prime Music and Television streaming.
There is a workaround with the Prime Photos, you just need to get the Alexa on your phone and change the Echo Show’s background photos. Every time you change the photo, it will automatically add to your gallery.
If you already buy music from Amazon via CDs or Vinyls with its “Autorip” feature, you can stream those songs on your Echo.
Alternatively, you can play your music using your cellphone's Bluetooth connection.
The other workaround is that if you’re already subscribed to Spotify and other music services, Amazon will let you stream those songs.
The same with movies, if you have UltraViolet digital copies in your locker, you can access your films on the Echo Show.
I think right now, the Echo Show is too expensive. Normally at $229, I wouldn’t even consider it or even recommend it… because you can buy an Xbox One with that much money! At the moment, the Echo Show is on sale for $179, which I still think it’s expensive at that price. But if you see the price dropping to $150 or less, I think you should consider getting one.
P.S. At the time of this writing, there is a dispute with YouTube, so its service is not available on the Amazon Echo Show. As far as I know, Google will be developing a similar device, so if you’re willing to wait, I’m almost certain the Google product will be a better choice.

We wrote about Kid Dakota in 2008: “I'm the first to admit my shameless devotion to the Minneapolis music scene, but Kid Dakota deserves special consideration. The product of singer / songwriter / guitarist/ engineer / all-around- dynamo Darren Jackson on guitar, keyboard and vocals, Kid Dakota also features drummer Ian Prince (formerly of Houston and the Dames and currently of Story of the Sea). Jackson, a South Dakota native, is also a producer in his own right, running a recording studio built into his house, where he has worked on albums by the Owls, Ice Palace and Vicious Vicious.”
