We’ve been writing about Pussy Riot since 2012, mostly because we’re interested in the human rights aspect... and also as fans of the riot grrrl/DIY punk genre. After being sent to prison for two years for hard labor, Pussy Riot’s founder, Nadezhda, or Nadya/Nadia for short, continues her work under the Pussy Riot name.

Expect an unforgettable guerrilla-style performance art and DIY punk energy. It will be an anti-Putin, anti-Trump (which Pussy Riot pessimistically predicted would be President in their song “Make America Great Again” in October 2016) kind of show. Pussy hats welcomed.

This 21+ show is sold out... which I knew it would, considering the massive media interest in the band, and wish they had booked a bigger venue.

When the Kolony Tour comes to town, only mayhem can ensue, and filmed ‘Mayhem’ was what it was—

Steve Aoki, the renown DJ /EDM musician known for his exceptional live experiences, brought the blissful insanity of his Kolony Tour to a sold-out crowd at the Armory in Minneapolis, heating up the cavernous building inside, as over a half foot of snow outside, was falling. 

The tour is in celebration of last summer’s Kolony (Ultra/Dim Mak Records) and Aoki brought friends Desiigner, Quintino, Bad Royale, Max Styler, and Bok Nero along, to make it into a six-hour live extravaganza. Additionally, a portion of ticket sales were given to the DJ’s own Aoki Foundation, which supports organizations in brain science with specific focus on regenerative medicine , so the party was also partially for a good cause.

After opening DJ sets by Max Styler and trio Bad Royale, things really kicked into overdrive with an hour-long set from Dutch DJ/Producer Quintino, who’s released a bevy of singles and a series of Go Harder EPs (on Spinnin’ Records) over the last several years.

Quintino successfully worked up the capacity crowd into a collective frenzy, many waving a multi-color changing light stick in the air as they danced about the room, as the DJ built tempo up successfully before dropping the beats and watching the crowd go crazy each time, in tandem.  The mix with songs like ‘Good Vibes’, ‘Lights Out’ and of course, ‘Go Harder’ perfectly set the stage for the remainder of the evening.

After a quick set change and a rumbling bass intro, twenty-year old Brooklyn hip-hop artist Desiigner stormed the stage for a relatively short thirty-minute set, but made the most of his time, climbing on his bodyguard’s shoulders, spraying the crowd with huge water guns, and rarely keeping still.

Desiigner ended his set with biggest hit, ‘Panda’, in the middle of the packed general admission floor so he could celebrate the song with a few of his biggest fans, dressed in panda costumes for the occasion.

While the venue’s VIP second level seemed somewhat reserved, the party was clearly on the floor where fans young and old, were determined to forget the bad weather outside and enjoy the festivities and warmth inside, before having to face nature for their journey home.  The venue itself continues to impress with orderly and secure lines to get inside and a well-mixed sound that reached clearly throughout, even to the furthest corners in the back.

Although his two hour-long headlining set featured a lot of recent music including several from the trap/hip-hop leaning new record, Steve Aoki’s performance also seemed a little more back-to-basics and elemental in its nature, the focus more on the mix being spun and connecting directly with the crowd, versus visual distractions that might take the focus away. 

Gone were the inflatable rafts and transforming robot people we saw previously, with the stage hosting a central DJ booth whose lighted front resembled the fanged mouth from the album cover, underneath two lit X’s, which made up the eyes.  Lighted tower columns were moved into place on both sides mid-set, a huge screen backdrop showed videos, montages, and the crowd itself at times, as Aoki had brought his own cameraman to document the event, even taking out his own phone (during ‘Plur Genocide’) to livestream a portion to his online fans. 

Until you hear dozens of them mixed back-to-back, it’s hard to remember truly how many collaborations Aoki has had, in just the last decade with an early set highlight showcasing his collaboration with Linkin Park on ‘A Light that Never Comes’ with the late Chester Bennington shown singing on-screen as Aoki mixed. 

More recent collaborations including those with Migos, Lil Yachty, Gucci Mane, and Lil Uzi Vert from the newest record, and those with One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, Korean group BTS and Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui all made it into the mix, often with accompanying music videos playing behind him. 

Aoki didn’t shy away from the classics either, working in the riffs and snippets from AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’, Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’, the latter of which showed a digitally-altered movie clip of Aoki holding onto himself at the ship’s bow, in that classic scene from Titanic. 

Light tubes bobbed in the air and the floor quaked from group jumping during the Aoki mix of Macklemore and Lewis’ ‘Can’t Hold Us’ and Latin music fans went wild for ‘Azukita’, a recent collaboration with Daddy Yankee, Play-N-Skillz, and Elvis Crespo. 

On-stage cameras rolled as the crowd sang along to ‘How Else’, Aoki’s collaboration with Rich the Kid and ILoveMakonnen and Quintino returned to the stage to join Aoki on their joint single, ‘Mayhem’, filming a portion of the song’s video as those with homemade ‘Mayhem’ signs were invited on stage to dance along. 

Desiigner re-emerged to help out on ‘Mic Drop’ getting the crowd even more fired up and dessert was saved until almost the end, as staff came out with a dozen full sheet frosted cakes as ‘Cake Face’ was cued up .  The DJ lept out onto the catwalk looking and pointing, as rabid fans held signs on high and pleaded with Aoki to get “caked”, a badge of honor by having cake all over you by the show’s end. 

‘I Love You When You Cry’, Aoki’s 2015 collaboration with Moxie would follow and things circled back to Linkin Park with ‘One More Light’ (Chester Forever remix) to end the main set amidst cheers and shouts as the venue neared its late curfew time, with fans demanding just a little more.

Aoki and the opening acts returned to the stage, taking bows, and cueing up the appropriately-titled,  ‘What We Started’, done originally with Don Diablo, Lush & Simon, and BullySongs with its lyric, “This is what we started, It's everything that we ever wanted, they won't hold us back”.

As North America’s highest grossing dance artist/DJ, Steve Aoki shows absolutely no signs of slowing down and this eclectic dance-driven, party-loving colony (…make that Kolony) that he’s cultivated, is only getting larger and larger.

After a long five year absent since MGMT’s last self-titled album, the duo (Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser) is back with their fourth album Little Dark Age. The record was produced by MGMT, Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, Kelela, Blood Orange), and long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, Tame Impala).

While the two worked on and off, it was only with the recent election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, was when MGMT was really inspired to finish their fourth album. Of the election, VanWyngarden questioned, “We were like, ‘Wow, is it actually possible for the most impossible thing to happen? [...] Apparently, we were more inspired to write pop music after evil took over the world.”

Girl Ray’s debut record Earl Grey came out last Summer on Moshi Moshi, and they’ve been described as a bit of Tiger Trap (and you know we’re big of Tiger Trap). … Frankie Teardrop My brother's favorite local band Frankie Teardrop is also listed on the bill... so the chances of him being at this show is high. ...

Despite the 7” of falling snow, a miserable slow drive into Minneapolis, and freezing cold weather, the Porches’ 7th Street Entry was packed full of fans by the time the band took the stage.

Opening the show (and on time) was local musician Cheap Fantasy (aka Jordan Bleau). He actually liked the house music (Madonna’s “Angel”), that he asked the DJ to finished the song before he started his set.

So, if you didn’t know, Cheap Fantasy is the post-Frankie Teardrop project from Bleau. I’ve previously mentioned that Frankie Teardrop was my brother’s favorite local band, but unfortunately, the band broke up in 2016. As Frankie Teardrop, the four-piece band (Dan English, Jackson Woolsey, Konner Johnson, and Jordan Bleau) had a very garage/punk sound to their music, but as Cheap Fantasy, it was very different as a pop synthy karaoke one-man band.

Highlight of Cheap Fantasy’s 30-min set was when former Teardrop’s Dan English and singer Rose von Muchow came on stage to perform the title track for the new Life of Glass EP. Unfortunately, the stark bright projection and literally no lights, I couldn’t get a decent photo of all three of them on stage.

Cheap Fantasy’s five-song debut, Life of Glass is out now on Forged Artifacts.

Next up was North London’s Girl Ray, on their first U.S. tour. They are actually an all-girl trio with Poppy Hankin on vocals and guitars, Iris McConnell on drums, and Sophie Moss on bass, but for this tour, they’re joined on stage by Mike O’Malley (I think) as extra guitarist and keys. I’m pretty sure it’s O’Malley, as he previously appeared as one of the lead “professional legends/actors” in Girl Ray’s music video for “Preacher” (as seen on youtube).

Girl Ray’s debut Earl Grey (Moshi Moshi) is one of the “20 Best Pop Albums of 2017”, according to Rolling Stone. The trio confessed to loving slacker rock, American weird rock like Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Pixies, so they are absolutely thrilled to be in America.

Although Poppy carried most of the weight on vocal duties, they’re often harmonized or sometime vocal trade off to bassist Sophie. The intertwining vocals will, of course, category their music to sweet twee and indiepop. They’re a young band, so we’ll see how the band will evolve with the next album.

As with a debut album tour, Girl Ray played almost everything they’ve recorded and appeared on their record Earl Grey, including “Stupid Things” and “Just Like That”.

It’s been two years since we’ve seen Porches (in September 2016 and April 2016), and I can tell you that the band has really tightened up their performance and stage presence... thanks to the fact that band leader Aaron Maine kept mostly the same live band, including Cameron Wisch, Seiya Jewell, Dan English, and Maya Laner.

Maine played it cool, but you can tell that he was pretty happy about the sold out show. Minneapolis is still “the best”, even with the snow storm taking place outside.

With three albums under the Porches’ project, the band seemed mostly content to playing their new 2018 album The House, mixing in some fan favorites from 2016’s Pool.

Trivia: In the one year break from touring with Porches, bassist Maya Laner decided to start her solo project called True Blue. Her debut single, “Bad Behavior” was called “striking”, according to pitchfork.com.

After over five decades, the tall cool one can still immediately sell out his show “in the land of the ice and snow”, carrying the fire of both new music and all-time classics—

Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters brought fans to their feet at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis for most of their ninety-five minute set, playing songs from all eras of his long-storied musical career. 

UK multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman did double-duty for the evening, both as a member of the Space Shifters, and on his own, for a buoyant thirty-minute opening set that ended with a standing ovation from the already-filed in capacity crowd.   

The Mercury Music Prize-nominated musician, known more overseas and for collaborations with his brothers Sam and Sean, played mostly fiddle and tenor guitar, also telling the audience he finished the follow-up album to 2016’s Ballads of the Broken Few (Cooking Vinyl Records) last month, so look for new music later in 2018. 

Lakeman enchanted with his journeyman songs such as the sea shanty-like tale of ‘Solomon Brown’, ‘Silver Threads’ from most recent album, and the foreboding violin undercutting on ‘The Bold Knight’. ‘The Educated Man’ is a brand new song, dedicated to teachers and told from the point of view from a man named Tommy, and Lakeman ended things mightily with the title track from 2004’s ‘Kitty Jay’.

With the smell of incense in the air, and the taped intro from 1983’s ‘In the Mood’ cued up, Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters (Justin Adams – guitar; Liam "Skin" Tyson – guitar; John Baggott – keys; Billy Fuller – bass; Dave Smith – drums; Seth Lakeman – viola, fiddle) entered to start things off with ‘New World…’ from the latest album, Carry Fire (Nonesuch/Warner Bros Records). 

“Come on in!”, he invited everyone, going next into the percussion-propelled ‘Turn it Up’ from 2014, then returning to the new album for its opener, the hopefulness of ‘The May Queen’, dedicated to “the first princess of summer”, echoing a previous lyrical reference from Led Zeppelin’s classic ‘Stairway to Heaven’.

Guitarists Tyson and Adams played off each other well all night, the former of ‘90s UK band Cast (though near unrecognizable from those days, now in long grey beard) meticulous in his craft while Adams was slightly more rockbilly, cutting and slashing across songs with true flair.  Led Zeppelin’s ‘Going to California’ was re-christened ‘Going to Minnesota’ as Plant changed the location in the first verse, to rave shouts and applause. 

Bluegrass and Americana has become Plant’s more recent music of choice, as evidenced by a folk version of 2005’s ‘All the King’s Horses’ and ‘Please Read the Letter’, a song originally created during the Page/Plant years, but re-imagined into Grammy-winning goodness with Alison Krauss in 2007.

“Let’s go further East”, Plant teased as the solidly tight band brought Arabic rhythms to 1970’s ‘Friends’, the title track from the new album next revealed a screen backdrop with fire images and patterns, and a mesmerizing ‘Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You’ stretched out by Tyson’s nimble string work and done mid-set, was perhaps the whole show’s highlight. 

Plant and co. even dusted off a 1929 obscure blues number, adding some trippy back beats compliments of Baggott and Smith, pairing that with a 1940 Delta Blues cover that gave Adams a chance to show off his formidable guitar talents, before ending the main set with the Leadbelly version of ‘Gallows Pole’, a centuries-old song brought back to life in the ‘70s... by the greatest rock band ever.

As most Plant fans know, the song does not remain the same, as he prefers to avoid looking backward and finds musical satisfaction in re-inventing many of the older songs, with some now sung in a lower register as he approaches the age of seventy.  And that was the case with the encore, which began with ‘In the Mood’, done in a country/blues style that only slightly resembled the original, but fit it perfectly with his current sound. 

“Is there anybody out there?!” he said following, to the response of loud applause as things got much more familiar with a classic Jimmy Page guitar riff from ‘Bring It On Home’ introducing the night’s final medley, seguing that into the raw rock of ‘Whole Lotta Love’, throwing in part of a traditional sea shanty ‘Santianna’ (which spotlighted Lakeman’s fiddle) for good measure, before reprising back into the rock classic. 

“We’ll see you again soon, we’re coming back through in the summer… when it’s a little bit warmer” Plant promised, with he and the band taking well-deserved bows as the snowflakes and temperatures continued falling, just outside. 

Let’s hope Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters follow through with just that, still bringing the fire of yesterday’s classics in tandem with today’s forward-looking and still-vibrant newer music.

Drastic times call for a drastic musical soundtrack—

Local electronic foursome Poliça has responded with new album Music for the Long Emergency (Totally Gross National Product/Transgressive Records) recruiting European orchestral collective s t a r g a z e as collaborators and playing a hometown album release show to a crowded Mainroom of devoted fans at First Avenue. 

The evening began with the first of two openers, IN // VIA, the newest project from locally-based ex-Dark Dark Dark/RONiiA member Nona Invie, playing a synth-laden dream-pop short set (with the help of Fletcher Barnhill on bass), that blossomed as more and more cinematic, as the set continued.  A self-released EP, meditations, came out last spring, with new music forthcoming. 

Outside of an angry punk band or two, no band in recent memory has started so polarizing before ever playing a note, than Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people, and reminding the mostly white audience, that this was not their land. 

Similar statements were given before each song played, with the expected crowd response ranging from a smattering of applause to cat calls and insults- but inciting seems to be part of their purpose, so in that regard, it worked.  Musically, they play a heavy, low tempo, skeletal doom rock blend meant to incite as much as their statements, with latest self-release being last week’s Abomination. 

After a break, lights dimmed and the venue screen rose to reveal Poliça along with Berlin-based neo-classical ensemble s t a r g a z e playing an enchanting seventy-minute set, encompassing the entire new album (albeit, in slightly different order) and a few additional songs.

Bolstered by the lighting design by Paul “Arlo” Guthrie and expressive dancers Nadine Olmo and Ryan Spencer who would come out for a few numbers starting mid-set, this was clearly a piece of live performance art, the vocabulary of resistance emoted in both audio and visual form.

The collaboration began a few years ago, hedged along by musical matchmaker Kate Nordstrom of the SPCO Liquid Music series with the album coming together soon after recent elections and a concert in Nov 2016 at the Fitzgerald Theater testing the waters on the live version of this unique collaboration. 

The music itself had an air of melancholy (as in the slower tempo of ‘Fake Like’) and at times, dystopia with rage rearing its head on the urgent sounding ‘Marrow’ which showcased dual drummers Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu against the somber string section, which they faced on stage, with Polica bassist Chris Bierden staying mostly in the background. 

 “It’s not our job to give you guys a comfortable show” vocal Channy Leaneagh said, “it’s time to feel uncomfortable” referring both to their opening acts and the tone of the album and live presentation. “It’s good to be cold again… and we know it, that’s why we stay here” Leaneagh said, glad to be back in her hometown, even if only temporarily. 

Brooklyn electro-acoustic producer Daniel Wohl contributed the new ‘Angel’ to the project, a song that starts with a bareness but builds into a frantic, sensory wall of sounds that played to the strength of both bands’ individual sounds. 

The crowd, though not as well-behaved as one in a seated theater, was mostly respectful and rapt, giving both the quiet and loud sounds the ample space needed to be heard cleanly within the room.

‘Agree’ is a sort-of love song, exploring that life goes on, even in darkest times set against the lush strings of s t a r g a z e and the lilting vocals of Leaneagh.  Leaneagh’s ex-bandmate /ex-husband Alexei Moon Casselle (aka Crescent Moon) next came out to lend a vocal hand on ‘Cursed’, a song filled with distortion, sharp strings and rapped verses against a symphonic backbone for a hip-hop-meets-classical stinging result.

The obligatory Prince cover was even cleverly re-imagined enough that many didn’t even recognize the 1982 song from his breakthrough 1999 album (though the percussion work somewhat gave it away), as it turned out to be a novel choice. The album’s title track ended the encore-less night, with Leaneagh singing “this is all I am, this is all I can be” repeatedly to end the song, implying that action is needed and that this too shall pass.

With 2018 continuing the same almost daily chaos of the year before, the best art in more perilous times incites, calls to action, reflects the state of the world, and provides a glimmer of light in any darkness. With Music for the Long Emergency, Poliça and s t a r g a z e accomplish all of that, and manages to be mesmerizing live in concert as well.

Porches is back with a new album The House, which came out in January via Domino Records. We caught the young singer on his tour for his breakthrough album Pool in April 2016 (and again in September 2016) and wrote, “New York’s Porches drew the biggest crowd of the night, thanks to his highly anticipated 80’s inspired new record Pool. If you didn’t know, Porches is the stage name for Aaron Maine, a charismatic young singer who wrote and recorded almost everything on his record in his new, tiny Manhattan apartment.”

North London’s Girl Ray to open. Girl Ray’s debut record Earl Grey came out last Summer on Moshi Moshi, and they’ve been described as a bit of Tiger Trap (and you know we’re big of Tiger Trap). This is a rare chance to catch the girl trio (Poppy, Sophie, and Iris) in the U.S., and an opportunity to hear one of the best “20 Best Pop Albums of 2017” (according to Rolling Stone).

Also, local musician Cheap Fantasy is on the bill.

2x Grammy-nominated DJ/producer Steve Aoki is back on his Kolony tour, hitting the new/old venue The Armory this Saturday. Freedom for Viet Khang

There’s a happy update on the Viet Khang story.

Khang was arrested in 2011 for writing and recording songs, “Anh La Ai” and “Viet Nam Toi Dau”. Despite the international attention from the world, the songwriter was trial and sentenced to four years in prison with two years of probation in October 2012. His friend, Tran Vu Anh Binh, was sentenced to 6 years and 2 years probation in the same trial for “Propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam”.

After serving his time, Khang was brought to the U.S. on February 8, 2018, thanks to the Vietnamese community and help from the government (particularly Senator John McCain and lawyer Shu Ming).

Most of this struggle is well documented by Vietnamese-language television SBTN.

Now that Khang is in the United States, Khang can breathe a sigh of relief. There’s no fear of imprisonment for singing or writing songs. This is a small victory, but we have to remember that some countries, like China, can imprison writers, who criticize the government. For example, poet and critic Liu Xiaobo, who was arrested in 2008 and died in prison in 2017.

So, welcome Viet Khang to America.
