Recently Beach Slang’s James Alex announced his new project Quiet Slang, which is basically Alex playing solo with a contributing pianist and cellist.

Of course, Beach Slang is also on tour, they’ll be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this Saturday. We’ve seen the group before, they wear their inspirations on their sleeves and would often reference the Replacements and Husker Du (Alex’s favorite bands are all from Minnesota apparently).

We’ve seen his show before at Treasure Island in June 2016 and can tell you that he’s an absolute blast to see. And yes, he does perform Men At Work songs, so be prepare to sing ‘Who Can It Be Now?’

The Quinn sisters Tegan and Sara is back on tour for their The Con X: Tour. A portion of the proceeds from this tour will help combat economic justice, health and representation for LGBTQ girls and women via their Tegan and Sara Foundation.

Most of their shows have been selling out (Austin and New York being some of the first ones to sell out), so be sure to grab a ticket now. If you’ve never seen the band, they put on a great show with emphasis on great vocal harmonies and very catchy songs. You can find out why the sisters have sold over 1 million albums sold, and garnered three Juno Awards and a Grammy nomination.

The best of both worlds, Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile unite to record and tour together to bring us their music at the sold out show at the Palace Theatre in St Paul, last Wednesday (October 25).

Opening up the show was Jen Cloher, and if I’m not misreading what Cloher said on stage, she is Courtney Barnett’s wife and partner. Although we haven’t heard much of Cloher’s music in the U.S., she was no stranger when it came to performing live music. She started her career as the frontswoman of Jen Cloher And The Endless Sea (which actually Kurt & Courtney honored with covering one of her songs ‘Fear Is Like a Forest’ on their setlist).

After spending years in music hiatus, Cloher watched her partner on TV and the internet as Barnett took over the world in music. Possibly inspired by this, Cloher went back into the studios to write and record her forth self-titled album, released only in August 2017. The album featured Barnett on lead guitar with the rhythm section of Bones Sloane and Jen Sholakis.

Unfortunately, for this tour, Cloher is playing solo, with only an acoustic guitar. Her guitar tech, Kelly, was mentioned as a “legend”, touring with Paul Simon, Ani DiFranco, Patty Smith, etc., and Cloher was happy to have her pre-tuned her guitars for her 30-min set.

Half of Cloher’s set actually included one to three minute stories about each one of her songs. The stories gave us an insight in Cloher as a person. For example, we know she was absolutely obsessed with Jim Morrison from the Doors, for which ‘David Bowie Eyes’ was written for… or that her set closer ‘Strong Woman’ was actually about her going undercover as a boy called Johnny to play Galaga game arcade at the corner store.

The not-so-secret story behind the Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile collaboration was that the two musicians actually had high respect for each other’s music. Whenever the two would run into each other, they have expressed interesting in writing songs together. Of course, since both were touring musicians, it meant that the two couldn’t actually get together anytime soon.

After over a year, the two finally made it happen when Vile booked a summer tour in Australia and, on the side, recording studio time with Barnett. The 8-day recording session resulted in the finished album Lotta Sea Lice (inspired by a Stella Mozgawa beach-side-story).

Kurt & Courtney’s live band called The Sea Lice is a supergroup of Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), Rob Laakso (The Violators, The Swirlies, Mice Parade), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), and Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin, touring member of Sleater-Kinney and Wild Beasts).

Much like Kurt & Courtney’s headlining appearance at Desert Daze (13 October 2017), the band kept the same setlist throughout this tour.

Like their record, some songs were a lot of fun, while some songs are long guitar droning (with everyone’s hair covering their face as they concentrate on playing the chords). It was very much harmonies, both combative vocals, and guitar harmonies (or “guitarmonies” as Barnett would have it).

Since the Lotta Sea Lice album only delivered less than 45 minutes, the rest of the set consisted of solo songs from both camps, including Vile’s ‘Out of the Woodwork’ and Barnett’s well-known ‘Depreston’ songs, and some cover songs. ‘Untogether’, a Belly song (not to be confused with rapper/grime Belly), closed out their set.

If you like Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett, this is a great team-up you cannot afford to miss. Most of their shows, including the Palace Theatre, sold out, so get your tickets sooner rather than later.

Los Angeles duo Girlpool recently stopped by the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis (October 23) to celebrate their sophomore album Powerplant (Anti- Records).

Chicago’s Lala Lala (Lillie West, Karla Bernasconi, Abby Black) opened up the show. The band had a DIY girl rock sound to them and their music seemed to fit in really well with the Girlpool audience. They ended their brief 30-minute set featured many songs from their debut record Sleepyhead, ending with ‘Future Flower’, a song that they’ve confessed had never been attempted to play live before.

Next up was Philadelphia, by the way of New York, Palm (not to be confused with Palms), a band that suffers from that common-band-name, making searching for them difficult.

After hearing the sad news that the Triple Rock Social Club would be closing its door come November 22nd, the four-piece (guitarist/singer Eve Alpert, guitarist/singer Kasra Kurt, drummer Hugo Stanley, bassist Gerasimos “Gerry” Livitsanos) band was pleased to have the opportunity to play the much beloved punk club.

The band, at least Eve, also announced that they have fallen in love with the city and decided to move here after this year. This isn’t the first time a Philadelphia band moved here, I know at least one other band, Strange Names, relocated here as well.

Their 45-min set included ‘Ankles’, ‘Child Actor’ and their set closer ‘Two Toes’.

Girlpool closed out the night. Although they are normally a duo of Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker, they’re joined on stage by a live touring band, synth Joshua Sushman, guitarist Lauren Early, and drummer Ross Chait.

The band mentioned that they thought about cancelling the gig because they had to pull out Tividad’s wisdom tooth recently. She was still in pain, but soldiered.

The group was last seen in the area in May 2017, when they released Powerplant, but decided to come back around since they were already scheduled to play a couple of Fall festivals, including Sound on Sound Festival in Austin, Texas.

Unlike Palm, we know that Girlpool will not be moving here, as Tucker gave out a loud, “It’s cold here, holy sh***!” (it was only sweater weather in Minneapolis for the natives on this night).

Like their previous 2017 tour, Girlpool played mostly Powerplant songs, but throwing in some Before the World Was Big (Wichita Recordings) to fill out the time.

It’s widely reported that R&B singer and pianist Fats Domino is dead at the age of 89.

Domino had more than 30 top 40 hits to his name, with his signature song ‘Blueberry Hill’ being his most well-known song.

With over 65 million singles sold, Fats Domino is only second to Elvis Presley as far as popular music sold in that time period of 1955-1960.

Another captivating show, a few spontaneous pop sing-alongs, and a decision on who made the best Batman—

That was the scenario as alt-country trio The Lone Bellow returned to town, playing a crowded Fine Line Music Café in downtown Minneapolis.   

Los Angeles by way of Philadelphia alt-folk-rockers Mt. Joy opened the evening with a forty-five minute set of new songs that properly introduced the new band, and gave these many won-over fans a chance to hear the tracks, soon to appear on their upcoming debut. 

Matt Quinn (vocals/guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) met in high school and started performing songs together over a dozen years ago, reuniting in LA to record four songs last year in their producer’s living room (joined later on by Michael Byrnes-bass, Sotiris Eliopoulos-drums, and Terrance Mack-keys to form a five-piece live act). 

Influenced by many classic ‘70’s jam acts, the whistling ‘Cardinal’ lyrically reminds to take the time to notice the everyday beauty around us, ‘Uke Song’ was played with “tiny guitar” as Quinn called it, and the uplifting and set-closing ‘Sheep’ actually had the most socially-biting lyrics, inspired by the Freddie Grey unrest- “When there is blood on the streets of Baltimore, people getting ready for a long war, maybe I was born in the wrong skin but those sheep are rolling in the mud again.”

Formerly based in Brooklyn, The Lone Bellow made the move to Nashville last year and vocalist Zach Williams now certainly looks the part, complete with bristly beard and cowboy hat.  What hasn’t changed is the band’s passion, heartfelt songs, and entrancing live performance, as evidenced in their hundred-minute headlining set, in support of their third studio album Walk Into a Storm (Descendant Records/ Sony Music Masterworks).

Williams and bandmates Brian Elmquist and Kanene Pipkin (with husband Jason on bass/keys and drummer Rico) barnstormed in from the beginning, opening with a new album track, then into 2013’s ‘The One You Should've Let Go’ towards the end of which, Williams caught his breath to compare things (somehow randomly) to “the best Batman movie” starring Michael Keaton, which in turn got Elmquist and Pipkin to segue into Seal’s ‘Kiss from a Rose’.

Williams went into Adele’s ‘Hello’ at the end of ‘Between the Lines’ as way of greeting the crowd, then Elmquist took over vocals for the new ‘Long Way to Go’. “Sorry about this hat, guys” Williams laughingly apologized, vamping a verse of Kid Rock’s ‘Cowboy’ as he took it off, already sweating through it.

Pipkin then took the lead for the new album’s ‘Feather’, an achingly soulful stomper with Williams doing his best Eddie-Murphy-as-James-Brown after a searing ‘Georgia Will’, “too hot in the hot tub…make ya sweat!”

A mid-set acoustic set, with the trio huddled around a single mic, hushed the enraptured crowd as lights dimmed and ears focused on their formidable harmonies (working in Seal ‘Crazy’ , John Michael Montgomery ‘I Swear’, and Bryan Adams ‘Everything I Do’ snippets as well, with the audience joining in). 

‘Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold’ had everyone joyously clapping and stomping along, with a couple of band’s kids out front helping sing lead (“…now go to bed!” Williams said, finishing) and musical redemption was achieved with the set-closing ‘Then Came the Morning’ and new single, ‘Time’s Always Leaving’.

The encore started gently with ‘Tree to Grow’, the trio’s masterful group voices on display as they sang, “The tree I'll grow to let you know, my love is older than my soul” and opener Mt. Joy came back on stage, with everyone arm-in-arm to sing an acoustic cover of Tom Petty’s ‘Wildflowers’ to close the evening.

As the last show of this current tour leg, The Lone Bellow once again impressed with their mix of acoustic and electric songs that came across more even more passionate and urgent live, than on record- a walk into this kind of musical storm is more than recommended to witness as they continue their tour next month.

One of the best live band Gogol Bordello will be stopping by First Avenue on Monday, October 30th. Since it’s so close to Halloween, expect some dressing up! Start wearing purple.

The renowned gypsy punk band just released Seekers & Finders (Cooking Vinyl).

We saw the band in 2015, and wrote, “Gogol Bordello is my favorite gypsy punk band out there (yes, there are many of them). Gypsy punk takes traditional Romani music and adds a little, you guessed it, punk. Gogol Bordello takes it a step further and adds a captivating live show. Last Saturday was my first time experiencing them live and I can already feel an obsession brewing in me. I never wanted last night to end. They played for two hours and it wasn't enough.”

Industrial rock, goth dance band My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult celebrated their 30th Anniversary at the Amsterdam Dam Bar & Hall in St Paul last night (October 21st).

Local rock group The Rope (singer Jesse Hagon, guitarist Michael Browning, bassist Sam Richardson, and drummer Ben Rickel) opened the show. They sounded like Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler, but with influences from Peter Murphy, or Joy Division. Their songs were dark, but surprisingly intelligent and danceable.

Songs on their 30-min set included some tracks like ‘Suffer’ from their 2015 Waters Rising. The record was co-produced with Ed Ackerson, who used to be in a band called Polara, but currently in BNLX with his wife Ashley Ackerson from The Mood Swings. The Rope was a special guest at the BNLX release party show at the Varsity Theater (RIP) in November 2014.

Midway into their set, guitarist Michael Browning’s equipment was causing distortion in his amp, which vocalist Jesse Hagon to comment, “Wouldn’t be a show without some sort of difficulty.” They roughed it for the remainder of their set.

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult was formed in the 1980s by Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy, and the duo became the posterchild of censorship groups for their references to Satan, Jesus, sex, in their disco dance/industrial music. In the 90s, the band, became synonymous with Ministry, KMFDM, and Front 242, thanks to signing to Wax Trax!

The band’s 1990 record Confessions of a Knife... and 1991’s Sexplosion! became the best-selling record at the time on the Colorado label. Of course, major label Interscope Records saw this and signed TKK to reissue Sexplosion! and secure a two album deal for 13 Above the Night and Hit & Run Holiday.

With the major label on their side, they had Thrill Kill Kult’s songs on various film soundtracks, including cult classic Cool World and The Crow.

For this special 30th Anniversary tour, the band (Groovie Mann, Buzz McCoy, Mimi Star, Arena Rock, Bradley Bills) they decided to concentrate on their earlier albums, including their debut I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits and Confessions of a Knife... .

As expected with these reunion shows, there were plenty of hardcore older (ages 30-50) fans in the audience. Many of them bringing their high school friends and making it a reunion for the audience, as well as the band.

While it may be challenging to play some rare tracks, especially if they weren’t written to be performed live, but it seemed that TKK put together a great set - complete with changing flame backdrop, colorful lightings, and a fog machine.

If you were an industrial music fan in the 90s, you can’t afford to miss these shows.
