The first annual Minnesota Fan Fest Costume Contest at the RiverCentre in St Paul, closed out the Saturday show (August 19th).
The best cosplayers were the ones that stood still and pose or did some routine. For example, Rufio (the eldest Lost Boys from Hook) gave a loud “hoo hooo” to please the Rufio chants. Ignis Scientia, from Final Fantasy, did a clumsy walk and tumble on stage. Ariel (The Little Mermaid) singing a song using her phone. These are the ones that stood out to us... and even though Ariel didn’t win, but it was at least a good effort.
Also, maybe some of the cosplayers could team up for a themed award. The Jedi Knight and Obi-Wan Kenobi or Kate Biship and Hawkeye could have easily entered as one entry vs individual entries.
The one complaint we had was the judges took too long to give out the award. We had to watch/endure the trailer to the forthcoming remake of Flatliners, The Little Mermaid’s ‘Under the Sea’, Frozen’s ‘In Summer, Lion King’s ‘Hakuna Matata’, Hercules’s ‘Zero to Hero’, and Mulan’s ‘I'll Make A Man Out Of You’.
There were about 20 registered contestants, all of which came home with a prize for participating. All the main winners received coupons for free pizzas and tickets for next year’s Minnesota Fan Fest (August 25-26, 2018).
In addition to winner’s awards, the Best In Show winner also got a Dynamic Forces Alex Ross’s X-Men (based on Dave Cockrum) Lithograph and the Judge’s Choice Award winner got an additional pouch.
A suggestion for next year’s contest: keep all the winners on stage. In total, all five winners could easily fit on stage for a great photo finish.
Winners
Third Place: Ignis Scientia (Final Fantasy)
Second Place: Sole Survivor (Fallout)
First Place: Destiny Hunter (Destiny)
Best in Show: Kefka Palazzo (Final Fantasy)
Judge’s Choice: Rufio (Lost Boys from Hook)
