While a massive storm quietly encircled the city of Minneapolis, it was rock-as-usual for patrons of the 7th Street Entry seeking a little something to get the ears ringing and the blood pumping. Local quartet Lunch Duchess and Staten Island’s fab four Cymbals Eat Guitars were more than happy to shake up a normally sleepy Sunday evening.
Lunch Duchess is helmed by lead vocalist/drummer Katharine Seggerman, formerly of B.O.Y.F. and Bae Tiger, and creator of ridiculously catchy pop songs anchored by a touch of grunge and a dab of dark humor. With the help of Nicky on synth and back-up vocals, Chrysalis on bass and a mystery baseball-capped gentleman on guitar, the band kicked out a lively set with tunes from their latest EP My Mom Says I Have a Rich Inner Life like “Cry” (part one and part two), “Gross” and “Unable/Unwilling” as well as “Intent” from the killer Nervous Breakthroughs split EP on Guilt Ridden Pop records featuring a who’s who of the Twin Cities’ best bands. Fans of Lunch Duchess should also check out City Counselor, Nicky’s solo vehicle for “sad songs about political shit.”
Cymbals Eat Guitars are a band that put on such passionate and energetic shows, I wonder if they were the ones stirring up those angry clouds. Following the opening number “Jackson,” singer/guitarist Joe D’Agostino quipped that if the power went out they would be putting on an acoustic show - which thrilled the Entry crowd. Indeed, the enthusiastic atmosphere in the club could not be deterred by anything as fans screamed and danced through song after breathless song of CEB’s roaring catalogue.
Fresh off a tour with the Pixies and still coasting on the glowing reviews of their latest release (2016’s fantastic Pretty Years), D’Agostino, bassist Matt Whipple, drummer Andrew Dole and keyboardist Brian Hamilton were in top form and gave folks true catharsis in the form of sweaty, earnest rock and roll.
Cymbals Eat Guitars will continue their whirlwind tour across the US, overturning cars and busting eardrums, through the July. Pick up Pretty Years on Sinderlyn Records and find your summer jams.
