Tacoma-based Skating Polly stopped by the 7th Street Entry last week, May 11th, touring in support of their latest New Trick (El Camino Records).
Opening up the show were local riot grrrls favorites, Tony Peachka and Kitten Forever. Both had brief 30-35 min sets, and as described by fans in the audience, “They’re all businesses, they don’t f*** around.”
The history of Skating Polly actually started in 2009, when the two step-siblings, Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 14, respectively. While we were curious about the duo, having written about them last year, the band made a big change in their DIY band in 2017: they added their brother Kurtis Mayo to the lineup. The trio had a successful tour with legendary Los Angeles band X, before branching on a headlining tour of their own - starting at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.
The turnout was terrific for a Thursday, at the height felt as if it was sold out... and this may have something to do with the endorsements that Tony Peachka and Kitten Forever made for Skating Polly.
Starting with a loud ‘Pretective Boy’ and ‘Nothing More Than a Body’, Kelli and Peyton took turn taking lead vocals on songs on their set. Kelli shortly announced their band name and said “shame on you if missed the two opening bands.”
Although the trio had enough original songs to play a full headliner’s set, they opted to cover Bonnie Dobson’s ‘Morning Dew’ (which appeared on the band’s previous record The Big Fit). Although the late-60s post-apocalyptic folk song may not have fit Skating Polly’s 90s girlrock style (Veruca Salt, The Breeders, L7, and Babes In Toyland), the band made the cover song their own by making it a scream-like duet.
Skating Polly’s New Trick EP is out now via via El Camino. The new Brad Wood-produced EP features Veruca Salt’s co-frontwomen Louise Post and Nina Gordon as co-writers.
