Although the Allah-Las was previously in the area on September 24th, 2016, at the Turf Club to promote Calico Review (Mexican Summer), they’ve decided to do a round two by stopping by the Triple Rock Social Club last Tuesday, March 14th.
Australia’s The Babe Rainbow opened up the show with a generous 45-min set. The self-described “monkey disco” band is a bit more laid-back 60’s psychedelic, a little bit beatnik-esque, band. Whatever they’re into, these guys seemed like really cool dudes to hang out with.
Normally the band is a trio with Angus Dowling as both drummer and vocalist, but for the live shows, they’ve added a dedicated drummer, in addition to Kool Breeze and Dr Elliot Love-Wisdom.
They tried a couple of different fun things on their set, which they gave this impression that the Triple Rock show was the first time they’ve tried it. For example, they tried to make a “special announcement” (but no dedications were made) and a special vocal delay affect (echo effect) on one of their song.
They ended their set with a Portuguese song, which required Angus to bring out his iPhone to read lyrics off of it. To be honest, I didn’t think he needed the lyrics, as the audience wouldn’t have known if he was singing it correctly or not.
It didn’t take very long for psych band Allah-Las (Matthew Correia, Spencer Dunham, Miles Michaud, and Pedrum Siadatian) to setup and go on stage (earlier than scheduled!) The California band has often been compared to The Zombies, and The Kinks, but with the release Calico Review, they seemed more like Velvet Underground (minus their Nico involvement). Still, they’re in great company, and fans agreed that they’re just as good, as evident by the terrific turnout to their show.
We first caught the band in 2013, when they were still promoting their debut self-titled record, and noted, “a jangly garage rock set capturing a peaceful, easy California-like feeling while sounding heavily like Abkco-era Rolling Stones, Zombies and Animals on tracks like ‘Catamaran’ and ‘Don’t You Forget It’ from last year’s self-titled debut album. Singer Miles Michaud looks somewhat like a 70’s Dylan, but their sound is from the decade before, and Amos Lee-lookalike drummer Matt Correia even stepped out for lead on the last song, maracas in hand.”
At that time, the band only had an album’s worth of material to play from, but now back with over 30+ songs, the band sounded more diverse, often medleying and mixing songs to create a seamless soundtrack.
Many fans still consider their sophomore album Worship the Sun was the band at their finest, and they were treated with a double-set of intro songs, ‘Follow You Down’ and ‘Buffalo Nickel’. Images of light shapes were projected on the background as the band continues throughout their hour-long set.
Allah-Las’ Calico Review is out now. Their tour continues and will end at Coachella 2017.
