First Fleet Concerts is bringing American hip hop artist and social activist Talib Kweli to Minneapolis at the Cabooze this Wednesday, February 1st.

Show up early to check out Styles P and K’Valentine. The latter is Kweli’s protegée, K’Valentine, she is currently touring in support of her forthcoming debut record Here For A Reason (set for release sometime in March 2017 - just in time for SXSW).

Looking over their Facebook, I get the impression that this may be the final Phox (pronounced like “fox”) tour.

Phox writes: “Tickets are here for our Goodbye (For Now) Tour with Cuddle Magic! We hope to see you for our last hurrah! xo”

The Wisconsin-based band first came to our attention in August 2014, when they came to town in support of their self-titled debut record (Partisan Records).

Show up early to check out Cuddle Magic, a six-piece avant-pop band (Benjamin Lazar Davis, Christopher McDonald, Dave Flaherty, Alec Spiegelman, Kristin Slipp and Cole Kamen-Green), not exactly from Brooklyn and not exactly from Philadelphia... but somewhere in between.

Ashes/Axis came out January 27 on Northern Spy Records.

Los Angeles’ folk-rock band Dawes is back in town, this time billed as “An Evening With Dawes”.

The band features brothers Taylor (guitars and vocals) and Griffin Goldsmith (drums), along with Wylie Gelber (bass) and Lee Pardini (keyboards).

The last time we saw Dawes, they were Conor Oberst’s band, in June 2014 ... and they played whatever the Bright Eyes guy wanted to play! The “three-hour evening” was incredible.

How we described the 2014 show: “The three-hour evening was opened by Los Angeles-based Dawes, who considers Minneapolis one of their strongest markets, in a solid hour-long set of their own. The band opened with a string of new classics, ‘Most People', ‘Time Spent in Los Angeles’ and ‘If I Wanted Someone’, in front of a raving receptive crowd, that connected with singer Taylor Goldsmith’s storytelling lyrics. The band humbly downplays the love given by Minneapolis, though could likely sell out anywhere locally, if they decided to ever do an extended residency.”

Normally, Ottawa’s Hollerado is actually on tour with The Sam Roberts Band, however for this Saturday night (January 28th), they’re headlining the 7th Street Entry, while SRB was asked to perform at The Current’s 12th Birthday Party next door at the mainroom.

Sleep Study

Opening up the show was Sleep Study, starting at 9pm. We caught the local band a few years ago, and like last time, they were a trio, led by singer/guitarist Ryan Plewacki, and they covered Buzzcocks’ ‘Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)’.

Savoy Motel

Nashville’s Savoy Motel was up next. The gargey / psychedelica / 70’s inspired band is normally touring with The Lemon Twigs (however, like The Sam Roberts Band, they were asked to play at the sold-out The Current show).

The four-piece features bassist Jeffrey Novak, drummer Jessica McFarland, guitarists Dillon Watson and Mimi Galbierz, all took part in singing (lead or backup) songs from their self-titled debut album (What’s Your Rupture? Records), such as ‘Sorry People’.

Their set was familiarly similar to their first Minneapolis appearance with The Dandy Warhols in September 2016... but they appeared to be more confident and talkative on their appearance last night. They’re still a very young band, so expect more great things from this band.

Canada’s Hollerado took the stage earlier than advertised, starting their set with some of their favorite songs to play live, including their biggest hit song ‘Americanarama’ (which got the crowds pumping and dancing hard). After ‘Americanarama’, singer Menno Versteeg announced that they will be playing unreleased songs from their forthcoming album ... set for release sometime this Spring 2017 (just in time for SXSW, I reckon).

As promised, the band played a lot of new songs, including a track they called ‘Eloise’ and something called ‘I Got You’ (a song about being “rich and an a******”).

Hearing the new songs live for the first time, I can tell you that it is classic Hollerado’s standard sound... that is about fun and not to be taken too seriously.

Midway in their set, Versteeg reminisce the last the band was in town, it was about four years ago at the same venue. They were coming down from Chicago and were trying to make time, as they were running late. In fact, they were speeding the entire way and was eventually pulled over by the police. As the officer was writing them a ticket, they asked the cop, “How fast can we go, without getting caught?”.

The punchline was that on that 25 November 2013 night, the band made a record time of setting up and ready to play on stage in seven minutes.

Hollerado ended their set with ‘So It Goes’, and tomorrow resumes their tour with fellow Canadian band The Sam Roberts Band.

It’s the apex of winter in the upper Midwest—the red earth has been covered in white and people huddle in self-prescribed hibernation, to ride out the seasonal chill.  A perfect occasion to invite oneself into the Bear’s Den, as the English band made a stop at a very crowded Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis for ninety minutes of thought provoking, stirring anthemic folk rock.

The evening opened with a half-hour solo acoustic set from Louisiana singer-songwriter Gill Landry, who is finishing up new music to release the follow up to 2015’s self-titled full-length on ATO Records.  The ex-Old Crow Medicine Show guitarist used the storytelling of his lyrics and hollowed baritone of his voice to paint pictures of lonely highways, fully fleshed character studies, heartbreak and some redemption.

Often crafting songs from people he’s met along the way, there is a campfire feel to his storytelling songs like ‘Denver Girl’ and ‘Just Like You’ and Landry dusted off his OCMS song ‘Genevieve’, a haunting tune evoking his native bayou country singing a eulogy of a woman stealing a younger man’s heart described aptly with its lyric, “Creole queen, with your love like fire and your heart like a guillotine”.

The ninety-minute headlining set from Bear’s Den started ominously, with dry ice fog pumped on to a dimly lit stage with the band’s logo as backdrop and the synth chimes of the Terminator 2 theme as their intro music, but things softened quickly as the band started with the title track from their latest, Red Earth & Pouring Rain (Communion Records).

The band is recently down to just a duo, as just singer-guitarist Andrew Davie and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Jones remain after bandmate Joey Haynes’ departure last year, but the band muscles up their live show by tripling its current size, becoming a sextet.

The band plays an addictive blend of highly polished anthemic folk rock, not dissimilar to Mumford and Sons, as members came up in the ranks at roughly the same time, coming together to help form Communion Records, and are also in the same sonic wheelhouse as Frightened Rabbit, Elbow and others.  The band’s evocative lyrics and widescreen influences (i.e. director Robert Altman, painter Edward Hopper, author Raymond Carver) have helped build their fan base and this night at the Fine Line was one of the most attentive crowds at this venue, in some time.

‘Emeralds’ was played early on, one of the most anthemic on the new record followed soon after by ‘Stubborn Beast’, maybe the earliest song the band has written, and admittedly never quite figured out to perform live, which is why it’s rarely played.

For 2013’s ‘Don’t Let the Sun Steal You Away’, the band decided to sing it bare and off-mic, as the hushed crowd whispered along with the chorus, then the ache of Davie singing “Somewhere deep down I still believe you’ll always be the love of my life” on ‘Roses on a Breeze’ awakened emotions we’ve all felt.

Synth chimes punctuated ‘Auld Wives’ and the band finished their main set with ‘Above the Clouds of Pompeii’, a Best Song Muscially and Lyrically-nominated number for the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards, with Davie sarcastically teasing this was “100%, our last song”, pretending to not be aware of the encore process and ended with the drummer and keyboardist both playing horns.

Then encore began with the pensive ‘Napoleon’ which looks back on childhood memories and possible amends, then was followed with a banjo-plucking ‘Gabriel’, performed by half the band acoustically in the middle of the burgeoning floor crowd.

Returning to the stage, Davie explained their custom of doing a cover of a song of local significance on every stop of this tour, then brought out UK sisterly trio, The Staves (recent transplants now living in the metro) out help to sing harmonies on Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ (though done more in the Sinead O’ Connor style).  The groups were very familiar with each other from their Austin to Boston tour a few years ago, involving five VW camper vans, which was subsequently turned into a documentary film.

Ending with ‘Agape’, the overall set felt like Davie’s aspiration for the new record- “the idea of driving forwards while looking in the rear view mirror- a sense of contrary motion”; though based on their crowd size and reception, the only direction Bear's Den will be going is forward and upward.

R.I.P. Tom Edwards (Adam Ant)

Adam Ant’s guitarist and musical director, Tom Edwards has died on January 25th at Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Adam Ant explained that Edwards was actually on tour with Ant’s North American Kings of the Wild Frontier tour, which began on January 22nd. With the sudden and mysterious death, they suspect that it was a heart failure.

Adam Ant wrote:

Tom was on tour with the band as part of the North American Kings of the Wild Frontier tour that began two nights ago in Washington DC. He was found unresponsive then rushed to the hospital where he passed away yesterday in the late afternoon. An autopsy is pending. No further details are known at this time.

Tom was an esteemed guitarist throughout his career and had played with Roddy Frame, Fields of the Nephilim, Rebelles, Edwyn Collins, Andrea Corrs, Arno Castens and Spiderbites.

“On behalf of Adam and his band, we thank all of you for your best wishes and support during this most difficult time, Tom shared his musical gifts with the world and his spirit will live on forever.”

In order to pay respects to their honored bandmate, Adam and his band have postponed their upcoming concerts at The Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia (January 26) and Webster Hall in New York City (January 27), but will resume the tour at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto (January 29).

On the tour note, Los Angeles’ glitter-rockers Glam Skanks will be opening for Ant for the January/February 2017 North American leg of the tour. The tour resumes today (January 29th) and will continues with these announced dates:

Thanks to reader Johan, who sent in the link and information, regarding the death of Rembert De Smet singer of 2 Belgen on Saturday at the age of 62 to cancer. The news hit all of Belgium’s news channels and newspapers - but the U.S. has yet to mention De Smet’s death.

I should mentioned that he started work in the late ‘80s, but didn’t use his real name! Some of his early monikers includes the names Ro Maron and Agaric.

His best-known band 2 Belgen (Twee Belgen), featuring Rembert De Smet on guitars and vocals and Herman Celis on drums. The band is known for their three big hit songs ‘Lena’ (1985), ‘Queen Of Mine’ (1985), and ‘Opération Coup de Poing’ (1984). Since 1994 (after 2 Belgen broke up), he's active as Esta Loco, a Flamenco-Pop band, where he provides over a dozen acoustic instruments.

After resisting the television show Mr Robot on USA Network, I gave in and watched the first season. It was pretty good, it did remind me of plot from Fight Club... and despite figuring out the “twist” midway into the first season, it was still quite enjoyable.

I recently picked up Season 2 on Bluray, mostly because I had extra cash from the holidays and really wanted to get that Mr Robot patch, exclusive on Best Buy editions.

Anyway, while I’m waiting for Season 3, I have started watching Season 2 again... this time with all the spoiler knowledge, and paid more attention to the music in the show. I knew most of the popular songs they used on Mr Robot, but there were a few (like that Japanese trashcore band Bleach) that I didn’t know, and, of course, none of the music were actually credit in the TV show!

My brother’s favorite band AFI (not to be confused with the American Film Institute) will be headlining First Avenue this Monday! The punk/emo band is touring in support of their tenth self-titled (aka The Blood Album) record.

The Chain Gang Of 1974 (aka Kamtin Mohager and not to be confused with The 1975 or Chain and the Gang) to open. The synth-pop band was just in town last November 2016, and we noted, “This indie/electro pop group definitely got the crowd warmed up, just like an opener should, but the crowd seemed to respond to them a lot more than most opening acts. I think the main reason for that was the undeniable energy that was coming off of the stage. It may have been early in the night but singer Kamtin Mohager acted like he was headlining the show with how much he was moving around.”

The Lumineers are burning brighter than ever, as evidenced by their recent show in front of 10,000 at the Target Center in Minneapolis —how much brighter?- consider that they played the 7^th St Entry across the very street, less than five years ago, and now were entertaining an audience over forty times in size.

The evening’s eclectic three-act lineup started with Margaret Glaspy, a California singer-songwriter based in New York, in support of her debut full-length, Emotions and Math (ATO Records) and backed by two sidemen for her brief thirty-minute set. 

After missing her on the small stage at last fall’s Festival Palomino, we were eager to see her live and the jangly ‘Situation’ and verse on song ‘Memory Street’, “Walk down memory street, why remember, all the times I took forever to forget?” made her low-key set worth the wait.  Reserved and somewhat demure, Glaspy avoided any talk between songs until the end, thanking the crowd and local station The Current, for their airplay. 

A musician’s musician, baroque folk/pop artist Andrew Bird, who considers the Twin Cities a kind of second home, made the most of his forty-five minute middle set, to satisfy longtime fans and introduce himself to many in the audience seeing him for the first time.  Bird is still in support of last April’s Are You Serious (Loma Vista Records) and played an abbreviated set, similar to last September’s Festival Palomino outing. 

Opening with the mesmerizing lead single from the new album ‘Capsized’, Bird and band deftly moved through tunes old and new, filled with his trademark violin work and string plucking, as well as plenty of whistling. 

“I’m no stranger to this town” Bird said introducing himself, mentioning he recorded ‘Plasticities’ in North Minneapolis and saying he was at the Turf Club the previous night seeing a local band. Ending his set with 2005’s ‘Fake Palindromes’, it was plain he’s great, but better seen playing a full set in an environment where people will listen more intently, like a church.

After a set change, The Lumineers didn’t even wait for their intro music to finish, as the curtain fell and found the band playing along to the end of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’.  The core Denver trio, Wesley Schultz (vocals, guitar) , Jeremiah Fraites (drums, piano) and cellist/backing vocalist Neyla Pekarek (who joined in 2010) doubled their size for the live show, with three sidemen joining on, in support of second major label full-length, Cleopatra (Dualtone/Dine Alone Records). 

2013’s ‘Submarines’ started their eighty-minute set, singer Schultz asking “are you out there Minneapolis?!” after a verse, to screams and wails in response from the mostly millennial-aged crowd.  Surprising was watching them knock out several hits within the first fifteen minutes, as breakout song ‘Ho Hey’ was played third, followed by current single, ‘Cleopatra’.

“This is a really big room… one of the biggest we’ve played”, Schultz said just over twenty minutes in and recalling how they used to play a lot of house shows, wanted to replicate that intimacy as he and band then moved to a center B-stage, for a more sparse four-song mini set.  On ‘Where the Skies Are Blue’ Pekarek took over part of the vocals and ‘Charlie Boy’ was written for Schultz’ late uncle, lost in Vietnam.

The sound grew bigger on ‘Sleep on the Floor’ as the band returned to the main stage, with its lighted groups of organ pipes looking like stalactites and diamond shaped screen showing patterns and obscure images.  The mix sounded surprisingly crisp from the floor, as Schultz’ voice and all instruments were clearly heard and rightly prioritized. 

Arena folk songs like the new ‘Angela’ came off particularly nice, with Shultz slipping in a “I didn’t vote for him” on ‘Big Parade’, to cheers.  No sophomore slump here, as lead single from the new album, ‘Ophelia’ topped both alternative charts on Billboard, and had the 10,000 strong, singing right along, as Schultz dashed out along the right side of the floor to high-five fans. 

The encore would start quietly, with Schultz coming out alone, putting in a plug for a family salvage yard just outside of Mankato, before playing ‘Long Way’, which was inspired by his father’s cancer battle. 

“…want to play a song from somebody else from Minnesota”, Schultz said as the band rejoined him for a tempo-changed, piano-charged version of Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’, almost reinventing it completely. 

A bevy of confetti showered the crowd on finale, ‘Stubborn Love’ as the crowd sang along with the chorus, with the group taking bows as the Springsteen outro music ushered them from the stage. 

True to their name, The Lumineers continue burning brightly on their meteoric ride, as evidenced by capacity arena crowds and even an invitation from U2, to open a leg on their upcoming tour. Their biggest song-to-date starts, “I've been trying to do it right” and from the crowd reception on this night, mission accomplished.

Pete Overend Watts, the original bassist for Mott the Hoople, has died today (January 22nd). The bass guitarist (originally guitarist) appeared with singer Stan Tippins on The Doc Thomas Group, before using the Mott the Hoople name, with new singer Ian Hunter.

Watts became the staple of Mott the Hoople’s lineup throughout the years, even appearing as late as 2013 when they went on a reunion tour.

Verden Allen, who left the band in the early 70s (but returning for the 2009 reunion), wrote:

Feeling heartbroken at the news of our beloved Overend leaving us today.

Pete was a warm, funny, intelligent, talented and hugely charismatic person, simply unique in all ways. You'd only need to spend a small amount of time in his company to know that. Whether it was his fishing, rock and roll history or walking exploits, he always had an entertaining story to tell.

There are no words to explain how much he will be missed, and by so many that he was an inspiration to.

Our thoughts go out to his sister, friends and anyone hurting for his loss at this difficult and sad time.

Pete Overend Watts, rock and roll royalty. You really were one of the very best. It was an honour to have been your lifelong friend and to have shared a stage with you. RIP. X

Last year, you may recall that original drummer Dale Griffin dying at the age of 67 to Alzheimer's disease on January 17th, 2016... and there’s fear that Mick Ralphs will be next having suffered a stroke following the Bad Company UK tour on November 6.

Also German experimental rock band Can’s drummer, Jaki Liebezeit, is dead. According to Pitchfork, he died of “sudden pneumonia”.

Maggie Roche, the eldest of the three sisters act The Roches has passed away.

The band made an official announcement:

Friends, my dear, beautiful sister Maggie passed away today after a long struggle with cancer. She was a private person, too sensitive and shy for this world, but brimming with life, love, and talent. I want to let you know how grateful she was to everyone who listened and understood her through her music and her songs. After decades of singing, writing, traveling and performing together, we spent the last month and a half helping each other through her final journey, now I have to let her go. I’m heartbroken. I adored her. She was smart, wickedly funny, and authentic ~ not a false bone in her body ~ a brilliant songwriter, with a distinct unique perspective, all heart and soul. It’ll be hard for me to carry on without her.

We previously mentioned the other sister, Suzzy Roche (not dead but ironically has a song called ‘The Death of Suzzy Roche’) as mother of Lucy Wainwright Roche.
