MERRY CHRISTMAS, MR FIELDS

Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields is the “video-album” and Original Soundtrack, created by Michael Angelakos (of Passion Pit), Brent Katz (formerly of Harlem Shakes), and director Hana Haley. The album is available now via AKH Productions and Frenchkiss Records.

AKH Productions will be donating all of the proceeds to charity, as well as the Nichols SchoolArts Department.

Christmas Hors D’oeuvre

Classically-driven French pop trio L.E.J. (Elijay) just released their Christmas Hors D’oeuvre EP. L.E.J. consists of three childhood friends: Lucie, Elisa, and Juliette, all studied classical music and orchestration while attending conservatory in their native France together.

The trio added pop music with their classically trained sound on their En attendant l’album, following the the international success of the breakthrough online hit “Summer 2015.” L.E.J. opened up for Pharrell and sold 200,000 albums in less than three months.

Christmas Hors D’oeuvre EP is available now on Republic Records.

Knox Hamilton, with help from Team Coco, recently premiered their Beach Boys cover song ‘The Man With All The Toys’.

When asked why, singer Boots Copeland said, “We always felt that The Beach Boys Christmas (1964) album deserves more recognition than it gets, so we figured what better band to carry the torch than Knox Hamilton.”

Of course, the Knox Hamilton cover will feature their falsetto-singing and harmony vocals.

You know, the most popular video service in the world and Roku just didn't work with it? It's sad and lame, in my opinion. ....

I recently upgraded my television to a Samsung 4k (UHD). It's only 40-inch, but it's big enough for me (especially for the sale price). My current first-gen PS4 isn't powerful enough for 4k (or wasn't really design to output at that resolution), and, at of this writing, only the Xbox One S and the new PS4 Pro offers 4k support. Unfortunately, I'm not going to re-buy a PS4 and I'm patiently waiting for the Xbox One Scorpio... so I can't just buy the current Xbox (although I really want to get it it now).

The 4k problem is actually the lack of content. Streaming 4k is not a great option, because my internet cannot handle streaming it. Downloading it takes forever... and not to mention the sheer takes up too much valuable disc space on my harddrive. 4k discs are being sold, but are limited to certain popular titles and at an extra cost. Discs are priced at usually at $30, which is $10+ more than Bluray discs. Plus, unless you got an Xbox One S, 4k disc players is an added $150 or more extra cost.

Basically, it's a chicken and egg problem, but eventually 4k is the future. For collectors, the steelbooks and special packaging are only available on Bluray, so they're not migrating any time soon.

So why would you want a 4k TV? Let me break it down to you: the image quality is much better than a standard 1080 screen. It's not just my imagination, because the pixels look smoother/sharper because the image is upscale on the same display size. The smaller the dots, the better it looks... but only if you have really good 20/20 vision (or look closely at the display).

The other cool thing about my Samsung set is that it comes with apps, so if you're watching TV, you can click on the extra icon to see the latest weather or play minesweeper, etc. Although you can install apps directly on the TV, the Samsung App store is severely limited.

My only 4k streaming box options right now are: Roku 4, Chromecast Ultra, Nvidia Shield, or the Mi Box. Having own the Roku 2, I was not impressed with its inability to turn off or that it does not support multiple audio or even something simple as subtitle support.

As for the Chromecast, you basically need an Android Phone (which I currently don't own), and the Nvidia Shield is just too expensive ($200 for the base model and the remote is an extra $50, and the stand is $30)..... so that left me with my only choice: The Mi Box. If you aren't familiar with the Mi Box, it's a $69 Android TV box sold by Chinese company Xiaomi.

When you get the Mi Box, I suggest getting the Kodi app (formerly known as XBMC) so you can stream your local DNLA or add streaming video playlists. Kodi is really just the best app, I've used it on various platform. It will play everything, and it does multiple audio and multiple subtitles. It's really the only video player you need.

Some things I do not like about the Mi Box:

Power cord is not very long and seemingly exclusive to Mi Box (meaning you can’t just swap it out for another longer cable).

Limited to only Android TV selections (this is a Google limitation)

Voice search is not very good (again, this is a Google limitation)

Chromecast did not really work for me on some applications I tried.

No Apple Mirror (this is an Apple restriction/DRM issue)

One USB, no SD card reader

Some things I love about the Mi Box:

Has all the Apps I like: Haystack, Pluto TV, Kodi, etc.

Game option with the Mi Controller (may buy one if I find it in stores)

Cheap! $69

Small and compact design.

The Twin Cities most masterful showman will be joined by special guests Lydia Liza and Josiah Lemanski performing their updated version of “Baby It's Cold Outside”, Maggie Morrison singing John Lennon's “Imagine”, A Venus De Mars/Mark Mallman duet of Bowie and Bing, and many other surprises throughout the night (including an appearance by the man in red himself.)

“It will be a much needed night of good feelings, focused simply on the music of joy. No strings attached.” He says. Mallman will also perform spirited material from his 2016 local smash, “The End Is Not The End”. Porcupine, featuring Husker Du member Greg Norton, open the night.

On Dec. 21, Jake Gusto will defend his turf by taking the stage at First Avenue/7th St. Entry for “The Homecoming Show” – the aptly titled, full circle performance by the unrelenting 24 year old. In what is sure to be an emotional performance, Jake Gusto comes back home on a comeback mission.

Maori singer Bunny Walters has died today (December 14th in New Zealand’s time zone) at the Waikato Hospital after a short illness, according to nzherald.co.nz. Walters was 63.

Bunny Walters was best known in New Zealand for his hit singles ‘Brandy’, ‘Nearest Thing to Heaven’ and ‘Take the Money and Run’.

Also, Chicago’s Barrelhouse Chuck has died at the age of 58 to prostate cancer. The Chicago Tribute reports: “Barrelhouse Chuck was one of the last links to a majestic lineage of Chicago blues, and his death Monday afternoon, at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, ends one of the more remarkable stories in the city's blues culture. He was 58 and died of complications from prostate cancer, said Betsy Goering, his wife.”

Helmet is back in Minneapolis, touring on their “Dead to the World” tour. The venue of choice this year is at the Fine Line, which doesn’t offer the best viewing experience (unless you pay extra for the balcony).

According to the press release, the new Dead to the World album is Helmet’s first record in six years, and it is available earlier in October via earMusic and Sony Music Entertainment Australia (for Australia).

Front man Page Hamilton’s comment about Dead to the World: “Catch phrases, punchlines, guns, bluster, ammo, incivility, impatience, murder. You, me, us, them, life, liberty and the pursuit of property... We disagree, we disrespect, discourse disappears in the age of access. When in doubt GET LOUD! We’ve always been impressed with the Go 96.3’s shows, starting with their first in March 2015. Since then, the radio station created their first music festival called Go Fest, and starting last year, a new tradition of their Go 96.3’s Snow Show.

The 2016 Snow Show is back for the second year, this time at the Myth (originally scheduled at the Target Center).

This year’s headliner will be Bastille, who is currently on tour for his new album Wild World (Virgin / Universal).

Other guests on the bill: Banks (she was also on the first Go Show), Judah & The Lion, Coin and Miles The DJ.... PLUS one local band (to be determined by the Battle of the Band contest at the Fine Line tonight, December 9th).

We've been impressed with Judah & the Lion since we caught them in November 2014, writing “Many of their songs got their most dedicated fans to help sing along, especially on "Back's Against the Wall", where Akers stopped a second to hear his fans finish the lyrics... with the biggest grin on his face.”

Popular local fan-favorites Soul Asylum will be headlining First Avenue.

We caught the band when they were promoting their new album Change of Fortune (Entertainment One) and wrote, “The band has found a second life of sorts, with former Prince drummer Michael Bland joining in 2005 and bassist Winston Roye replacing Tommy Stinson and Justin Sharbono stepping in for longtime guitarist Dan Murphy, both in 2012. The band’s sound remains familiar under singer-guitarist Dave Pirner, a mix of 90’s-era alternative rock, power-pop, and indie post-punk.”

McNasty Brass Band will open.

R.I.P. Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)

Greg Lake, of Emerson, Lake & Palmer and King Crimson, has died of cancer at the age of 69, according to bbc.com.

What is tragic is that keyboardist Keith Emerson died earlier this year at the age of 71, to a suicide gunshot to the head. He was suffering from depression.

Only drummer Carl Palmer is alive from the trio.

Palmer made this statement on his Facebook page:

It is with great sadness that I must now say goodbye to my friend and fellow band-mate, Greg Lake.

Greg's soaring voice and skill as a musician will be remembered by all who knew his music and recordings made with ELP and King Crimson. I have fond memories of those great years we had in the 1970s and many memorable shows we performed together.

Having lost Keith this year as well, has made this particularly hard for all of us. As Greg sang at the end of Pictures At An Exhibition, "death is life." His music can now live forever in the hearts of all who loved him.

Outside, the skies of an early December were cloudy and overcast—

Inside the State Theatre in Minneapolis, it strangely looked similar, thanks to dim lighting and a fog machine, but the music shone through enough to make it anything but cloudy (but maybe purposely hazy) as Jim James returned to town for a headlining performance.

The evening began with a forty-minute set from the curious and beguiling Twin Limb, a dream/psych folk pop band from Louisville, KY, not coincidentally, the home of James and his band My Morning Jacket.

The trio, (Lacey Guthrie- Accordion, keys, vocals; Maryliz Bender- Drums, guitar, vocals; and Kevin Ratterman- pedals, guitar) recently released their full-length Haplo (Suretone Records) as well as collaborated with James on a cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade into You’.

The association with Mazzy is fair as they play similar layered, lonely sounding atmospheric songs, with Guthrie and Ratterman on one end of the stage, and drummer Bender on the other.  When Guthrie moved to accordion and the middle of the stage, the droning, brooding sound was more similar to Sixteen Horsepower, all embellished by Ratterman’s Fripp-esque guitar pedals and effects.

“You made a believer out of me” Guthrie crooned on ‘Yoo Doo Right’ mid-set and by then, the band was solidly winning over the still milling in crowd.  Guthrie’s vocal range can climb as well, sometimes to Florence Welch territories but is nuanced enough to gently float back down to a hush.  Set-enders ‘Long Shadow’ and ‘Don’t Even Think’ proved an ideal soundtrack for a stark chilly night outside.

Twin Limb fans more than got their money’s worth, as the band worked double duty, playing as part of Jim James’ band for his 110 min. headlining performance, and which also meant a quick set change before he got started.

Though James is more known for his work with My Morning Jacket, that band is more about setting a groove or just plain rocking, while James’ solo material, including new album Eternally Even (ATO, Capitol Records) draws from seemingly more personal lyrics, and a greater variance of sounds and influences.

Folk, soul, rock, psych, and anything else he can think of, are combined into a kind of mystic gumbo that makes up his sound with James opening up with the first two songs from the new album, ‘Hide in Plain Sight’ and ‘Same Old Lie’.  Dressed in a dark overcoat and sunglasses, he marched amongst minimal lighting from one stage end to the other, only breaking a couple times to address the crowd.

‘A New Life’ seemed more loose and buoyant than when we saw him play it on his last tour and ‘Actress’ seemed timely as an internal reflection about worshipping false idols.  The new album was more than well represented, as all its tracks were played, though not in succession.

‘True Nature’ smacked with an early ‘70s-sounding backbeat while ‘Know ‘Til Now’ moved into a space rock groove with a droning organ accompaniment.  Halfway through, there was something you don’t see too much of at rock shows any more- an actual drum solo, which led into the meditative ‘Here in Spirit’.

The new material seems to look more inward, perhaps the result of his actively practicing transcendental meditation, as in the main set closing title track from the album and its lyric, “Nothing more and nothing less, life's been completely fair, eternally even”.

For the encore, James came out solo, completely aware of where he was playing this night and began with a bare version of Prince’s ‘The Beautiful Ones’, with just his falsetto and acoustic guitar. 

Smoothly seguing next into a cover from another Minnesota hero, Bob Dylan, the tempo picked up and the full band joined him again for his own ‘Of the Mother Again’ and lyric, “Oh destiny,  to be seated at the right hand of the mother again” perhaps a nod to Prince’s untimely passing.  Side project The New Basement Tapes was represented with ‘Down on the Bottom’, a song James finished from discarded Dylan lyrics.

Though there were no Monsters of Folk songs and no sax solos this time out, the evening ended with the sonic slow-building punch of ‘State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)’, crescendo-ing in temporary darkness in the theatre just as James would sing, “the power’s really going out”.

With a timely new album and tour that questions the current times but hopes for its future, Jim James helps us transcend any overcast haze, to find that glimmer in an otherwise cloudy sky.

Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant has reunited for their annual popular Christmas tour. This year, the two will be bringing The Voice winner Jordan Smith.

Smith and Grant also wants to raise awareness for “Operation Christmas Child”, a charity known for distributing over 135 million shoeboxes of Christmas gifts to children in need in 150 countries.

“Christmas is my favorite time of year, and performing these holiday shows each November and December is a major highlight for me,” Grant adds. “I’m thrilled to share the stage with Michael and Jordan, and I’m so glad some new audiences will be able to join in the Christmas spirit with us this year. I can’t wait!”
