Har Mar Superstar’s Best Summer Ever is about to end at his homecoming gig this Black Friday, November 25th. We caught the band in April 2016 and wrote, “Har Mar Superstar is a staple in the Minnesota music scene. Even though he moved away for a couple of years, we claimed him as ours. He announced earlier this week that he was moving back and will be calling Minnesota his home again. Little did he know, he really never left as far as his fans were concerned.”

The singer’s latest album Best Summer Ever is out now.

Tickle Torture and Ggoolldd to open. Be sure to show up early to catch Ggoolldd... we caught them in October 2016 and they were truly excellent: “Milwaukee’s Ggoolldd (Margaret Butler, Nick Ziemann, Mark Stewart, Thomas Gilbert, and Nick Schubert) was up next. Singer and dramatic dancer Margaret Butler announced the band’s name, followed by a joke, “It sounds just like how it’s spelled.”... Musically, the band like a fun electro/pop dance party. Most of their set included songs from their debut Gold+ album... but their latest single ‘Undercovers’ came out October 7, 2016.”

What are you doing on Black Friday? Head over to the 7th Street Entry to check out Denver’s The Yawpers is currently on tour in support of their new album American Man (Bloodshot Records). They normally headline, but for these shows, local The4onthefloor (featuring singer Gabe Douglas) will be closing out both the Minneapolis and St Paul show.

For the Turf Club show, in addition to The Yawpers, they will also include a third opening band: The Coax.

With a new record out, a string of sold out shows, and an ever-expanding fan base, you could say that things are going…err, swimmingly, for Nashville’s Johnnyswim.

The band, led by husband/wife duo Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez played a sold-out show to a mesmerized crowd at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, just after selling out the fabled Ryman Auditorium in their home base of Nashville, and also have an upcoming appearance atop a float in New York City, for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Fellow Nashville artist Jonny P warmed up the crowd, dressed dapper (influenced by his own fashion design career) and crooning his take on retro-modern soul, with several cuts from his ‘Right To You’ EP, including ‘Drive’ and ‘Good to You’.

What a difference a couple years of hard work makes for Johnnyswim – when we saw the duo for the first time locally, the band played in the middle of a bill to a sparse but interested crowd, and Sudano was not pregnant, then was on the next time in town, then had their son Joaquin, then brought him onstage again, to show everyone how much he’s grown.  When the band calls their fans family, it rings true as you see how their own family has developed.

Their Let It Matter Tour finds the duo and their regular backing band on a stage with four spot stage lights behind them, with Abner sporting a new dark crushed velvet jacket on this night.  The duo is still clearly in love, obvious not only by the longing each has for the other in their eyes, but in the verses they sing both separately and together.  The band is in support of their recently released Georgica Pond (on Big Picnic Records), inspired by a regular vacation spot in New York near Shelter Island.

“It may be cold outside… but it’s hot in here!” Abner said before ‘Don’t Let It Get You Down’, a song dating back to 2013’s Heart Beats EP, “this is what it looks like when your dreams come true”, he said scanning the sold-out room.

After ‘Let It Matter’, the duo dedicated the few songs in the set, a series of love songs, to a couple they met pre-show, spending their 16^th wedding anniversary at the concert, including ‘First Try’, one that showcases their gospel-esque folk soul, and is the song they plan to sing at the holiday parade.

Hushed silence let Amanda’s vocals echo crisply for the new album’s title track and ‘Diamonds’, no longer quite as confrontational sounding as when it was originally written, but still delivers a powerful punch in concert and had the crowd singing along. Main set closer ‘Home’ found the band leaving the stage and going into the middle of the crowd to finish the song surrounded by fans and off-mic.

The most intimate moments were when the duo played huddled around a single mic, with Abner’s acoustic guitar and the crowd’s vocals on the choruses, the only accompaniment.  The three-song quiet encore was built around that, with the crowd’s rapt attention keeping the sound clear and the duo focused.

As ‘Annie’ morphed into the last part of a Willie Nelson cover, the crowd was patient then roared in applause as Johnnyswim thanked the audience and said goodnight, bringing back out the band and the opener, with everyone smiling and bowing.  You could say things went swimmingly.

Local band Night Moves is playing their hometown gig at the 7th Street Entry this Wednesday. The band recently shared their video for ‘Carl Sagan’, taken from their new album Pennied Days (which came out in March 2016).

I have it on good authority that Ed Borrie, who I highly respect as the songwriter for S*M*A*S*H, absolutely loves the new record. Based on his recommendation, you should check out this upcoming show. If you’re not familiar with this NWONW punk band, listen to my interview with Ed.

We caught the band in 2014 and wrote, “For the duration of their 40 min set, the band members (guitarist/vocalist John Pelant, bassist Micky Alfano, and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ritsema , with drummer Jared Isabella) were literally bathed in muted blue stage lights, which was mood evocative of their easy-going, slightly psychedelic 70s album rock-vibed sound.”

New York’s The Pretty Reckless is currently on tour in support of Who You Selling For (Razor & Tie).

Opening the show will be Holy White Hounds, currently touring in support of their debut album Switchblade.

We previously caught the Iowa band in July 2016 and wrote, “Watching these guys play was hilarious. The banter between band members was electric and the banter between band was audience was perfect. Everyone got involved in the show whether they only knew the one hit song or other various songs from the lifespan of this band. The energy was electric and absolutely everything you would want from a concert of an up and coming band that is about to make their big break.”

Also, be sure to show up early to check out Them Evils. The trio (singer, guitarist Jordan Griffin, bassist Jake Massanari, and drummer David Delaney II) is currently on tour to promote their self-titled album (Cold Black Love Records).

Murder By Death... The band name sounds sinister. The music is nothing short of beautiful and heartfelt.

The devious-sounding band headlined the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on November 11th.

New York native, Laura Stevenson, opened up the show with her sweet voice and sad love songs. Before she played a song, she would explain to the crowd that it was a love song, but it was sad sounding. This happened multiple times and the crowd giggled each time. She wasn't lying. Her love songs did seem to have a very somber feeling to them but that just added to the beauty of them.

It felt as if Laura wanted to be in the background and didn't mind people talking during her set. Her vocals and guitar were quiet in the speakers but not too quiet. It was the perfect music for people just getting into the concert and meeting up with friends. You could hear conversations about politics, conversations about work but, most importantly, you could hear Laura's beautiful voice turn into a soundtrack for those moments. I really appreciated the quietness of it and it seemed to match the somber music.

Towards the end of the set, Laura announced that she had two songs left. They were both love songs but they were not sad. The crowd laughed with her as she played through the last two songs of her forty minute set. These songs were more upbeat but because of how quiet her voice and guitar was; it was hard to justify calling them "happy songs".

I'm not one for slow songs, love songs, or even female singer songwriters but Laura Stevenson had me in the palm of her hand. She sang with feeling. She didn't care what the crowd thought of her (although from the chatter I heard, people were falling in love with her with every note she played or sang). She got up on that stage and did what she loved and that can make anyone fall in love with you as a musician.

When I first heard the band name, Murder by Death, I was sure it was going to be some sort of extreme metal but when I sat down and listened to them, I was completely caught off guard. At first I didn't like it because it wasn't at all what I was expecting but it quickly grew on me and now I look forward to every chance I get to see these guys live.

Murder By Death's music could be classified as indie-rock, alt-country, rock, punk... hell, it can be whatever you want to be because it is truly that diverse and that unique. Adam Turla, the singer, has a voice that makes the music lean more towards the country side of things but the talented band he has behind him make it so he doesn't pigeon hole the band as a country band. The lyrics about whiskey and devil fit Adam's raspy, yet clean, voice perfectly.

Every time I see them live, cellist Sarah Balliet seems to steal the show. Maybe it's the fact that seeing a cellist in a rock band is a bit different, maybe it's the fact that the way she moves to the music while playing is nothing short of captivating. Whatever it is, Sarah somehow steals my attention every time I see these guys live. I just can't tear my eyes off of her.

Murder By Death has been called one of the "hardest working bands out there" and last night, along with every other time I see them, proved it. There's nothing fake about their performance. Nothing is scripted and nothing seems to be anything less than genuine. They played through their nearly hour and a half long set with smiles on their faces the whole time. Those smiles matched the smiles on the faces of everyone in the audience. People were respectful as they clapped in between songs and stayed quiet through the slower, more somber songs. It's rare that you see a crowd so respectful but when you go to a Murder By Death show, that's how it always is.

Sharon Jones, singer of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, has died after a battle with cancer.

The official press statement:

May 4, 1956 - November 18, 2016

We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following organizations:

- James Brown Family Foundation
- Little Kids Rock

The cancer thing came up in 2014, when we heard that Jones was taking a break from touring and re-emerged with a hairless head from radiation treatment. Seeing her doing so many promo appearance, we wrote in January 2014 that “I can tell you that the disease has not slowed down this power-house soul singer.”

We caught Jones on tour for their last album Give The People What They Want (Daptone Records), at the State Theatre and noted her heroic fight: “There is perhaps no greater recent testament to the healing power of music, than the plight and eventual triumph of the Queen of Nu-Soul, Sharon Jones... Last June’s diagnosis of Stage II pancreatic cancer and subsequent surgeries to remove a gall bladder and other organs, followed by preventative chemotherapy would have understandably sidelined most, but not Jones. With current album, Give The People What They Want (Daptone Records) already in the can, the scrappy 57 year-old [now 60] admirably fought her way back, appearing on a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day float, before finishing chemo on New Year’s Eve, then returning to the stage regularly, soon after.”

Neo soul/pop band Fitz and The Tantrums will be ending their 2016 Fall Tour at the State Theatre in Minneapolis next Tuesday, November 22nd. The incredibly energetic band features Michael Fitzpatrick (“Fitz”) as lead vocals with co-vocalist/percussionist Noelle Scaggs, along with guitarist / saxophonist / flutist James King, bassist Joseph Karnes, keys Jeremy Ruzumna, and drummer John Wicks.

Their latest album is a self-titled album that came out in June 2016 on Elektra Records.

Barns Courtney (not to be confused with Australian singer/guitarist Courtney Barnett) will open. The UK singer-songwriter was previously in town with Tom Odell in October 2016.

We’re big fans of The Jezabels and was happy to see that they are back in the United States at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis... touring in support of their third studio album Synthia.

The Australian band was last seen in town in June 2014 and we wrote, “Most of the attention was focused on Hayley Mary, who sounded a little like Karen O and Kate Bush, but she had very few words to say on stage. Still, whatever lack of words she had, she certainly made it up with her funky dance moves.”

Chicago/Melbourne band Surf Rock Is Dead will open.

Local record label 45th Street Management Group is hosting this first-ever “Fall Jam” called 45th Street Fall Jam ‘16 show at the Myth on Sunday, November 20th.

Minneapolis’ Holy Moly (not to be confused with Fort Worth's Holy Moly) is headlining the 7th Street this Monday, November 21st. The band was started by three brothers: Adam, Joey & Sam Rivkin.

According to their bio, their father is Bobby Z, the drummer for Prince & the Revolution.

The Symptones and Planet Plookey to open. The latter, we previously mentioned played at the 12th Annual Jewbilee.

Holy Moly is a newly formed rock group started by 3 brothers, Adam, Joey & Sam Rivkin. They will be joined by guitarist and friend, Scotty Monten. Growing up surrounded by music, the brothers decided to band together to honor their influences. They have been playing together for years in groups such as KIN and THE SONS OF MOSES, along with their father, Bobby Z. (Drummer, Prince & The Revolution.) Z is known to sit in with his sons from time to time.

With his main band The Strokes touring only sporadically, guitarist Nick Valensi had the urge to try on a new skin--

That new skin is CRX, a new band fronted by Valensi and includes keyboard player Richie James Follin, drummer Ralph Alexander, bassist Jon Safley, and guitarist Darian Zahedi, newly out in support of their debut, New Skin (Columbia Records) and playing only their third date of tour in Minneapolis.

To warm things up and the venue being the Triple Rock, the first band on the bill was San Diego’s The Gloomies,  who are not as glum as their name might imply, and who have a recent EP, Blackout (on Thrill Me Records), and lead single, ‘Bleached Out’.

Streets of Laredo was next, not a rural Texas band as their name might hint, but a Brooklyn collective transplanted by way of Auckland, NZ. The six members crowded the stage and are partially a family affair that includes two brothers, Daniel and David Gibson, and David's wife Sarahjane multi-tasking on guitar and percussion.

The group has self-described their music as “put John Lennon, Simon & Garfunkel and Talking Heads in a washing machine with a pair of shoes” but their earthy and fun indie folk pop is really more in the vein of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes or The Head and The Heart.

The band has their debut full-length, Wild (on Dine Alone Music) which features the irresistible but odd ‘Silly Bones’and ‘Trap for Young Players’ which may be a New Zealand expression for “rookie mistake”, as we would know it better here.  The band even tried to teach the crowd some of the new songs, ever patient and clearly joyful to be presenting their new music to the mostly college-age audience.

Though CRX has been in existence since 2013, it’s only now that the band has found time to create and release an album, and hit the road to show crowds their unique hybrid of power-pop, garage, hard and desert style rock.  There are traces of Valensi’s The Strokes, but it’s clear the band has expanded their horizons of sound, to so much more.

Like The Strokes, the band’s songs are quick to the point, and have a punk get in/get out mentality, playing just a 37 min. set, which even included a unexpected encore.  “Thanks for coming, let’s have some fun” Valensi began, looking slightly disheveled like a young Joe Perry.

Velensi’s formidable guitar skills were on display with the opening, ‘On Edge’, a fueled-up track perfect for racing down a highway in a vintage muscle car.  Next song, ‘Give It Up’ had more of a sparse desert rock stomp to it, with Valensi’s mid tone vocals sounding clearer than Julian Casablancas'. Drummer Alexander dedicated the entire set to crooner Leonard Cohen, who we’d all just learned had passed way, with the whole band in agreement for the sentiment.

‘Ways to Fake It’ is more power pop and accessible, getting airplay on local radio, while next song, the crunchy ‘Broken Bones’ sounded downright metal.  Valensi alluded to the political rally which had just concluded near campus and ended up closing streets and the highway nearby briefly, saying “we should just drink our sorrows away” launching into a driving ‘One Track Mind’.

Being only the third night of the tour, Valensi commented that the van “still smells fresh” though that would likely change , and maybe purposely next going into the garage influenced ‘Walls’ with opening lyric, “I don't know what to make of it, when everyone is faking it”.

As the main set ended Valensi said, “thanks guys, we’ll be back” which the crowd took as an encore coming, but that wasn’t the band’s intention;  rather, that they would return to play again in the area, but they still came back onstage and decided to do an encore, playing ‘Anything’.

With a new skin, and more varied sonic palette than expected (partially courtesy of album producer Josh Homme of QOTSA fame), CRX is a welcome addition to the rock scene and a more than worthy foray for Strokes guitarist Valensi.

An electronica-soul dance party breaking out in the middle of a lifestyle furnishings store?!—

That’s exactly what happened as Cambridgeshire, UK (now Nashvillian) soul singer and electronic musician Jamie Lidell came to town for the inaugural local installment of CB2 After Hours, an evening series of special events at Crate and Barrel offshoot store, CB2.

In addition to the live performance, invite-confirming guests also enjoyed complimentary appetizers, beverages, photo booth pictures, and commemorative tote bags.

To get things started, area DJ Shannon Blowtorch kept things moving with her signature blend of beats and songs, both old and new, as the less than one hundred people in attendance enjoyed the evening and milled about the closed to the public store.

Lidell and talented guitarist Marcus Machado then took to the stage for their hour-long set, in support of latest album, Building a Beginning (on Jajulin/Kobalt Records), which just came out last month and marks his seventh studio release.

He re-acquainted himself with the audience by starting with his breakout song, 2005’s ‘Multiply’ which first showcased his DIY band sound and English soulful vocals.

‘Walk Right Back’ from the new album was next, an example of the record’s less electronic and more essential soul sound, with drummer Daryl Jones’ beats captured on laptop to be reproduced live.  This was the first time Lidell and Machado had played this stripped down, and Lidell wanted the crowd even closer, even though the setting was plenty intimate.

‘Another Day’ has taken on additional meaning, with the addition of Lidell’s one year-old son, and ‘A Little Bit More’ is still best known on these shores as soundtrack for a Target commercial.  Lidell pointed to the pertinence of songs like his new ‘Me and You’, in light of all the recent political events and unrest, saying “I can’t even vote here”, but asking people to make a difference in their own way.

‘Nothing’s Gonna Change’ evoked ‘70’s-era Marvin Gaye with its deep beats and looped soul harmonies, and Lidell would eventually break any metaphorical barriers between he and the crowd, by jumping down and singing with a few people in the front.

Although unplanned, applause and crowd shouts added an impromptu encore of ‘Little Bit of Feel Good’ showcasing Lidell’s abilities of layering tracks made with his voice into a microphone and performing the percussion and melody as a sequenced, beatboxing one-man band, as Machado strummed along rhythmically.

CB2 continues its establishment of cool with a couple other interesting events in other markets and based on its inaugural event locally in Minneapolis, we hope the series continues in this metro, as well.
