Fitz and the Tantrums
There’s really no doubt left– Fitz and the Tantrums are no longer a secret locally; rather, are firmly established as a party-starting, crowd-inducing good time band that everyone now has their eye on.

Thanksgiving rolled up early and with a handclap as Los Angeles band Fitz and the Tantrums invited a sold-out crowd to Come Get Your Love at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on their last show of their tour.
The night began with a frenzied forty-minute opening set from relatively new singer-songwriter Barns Courtney, an Ipswich, UK native who grew up in Seattle and who has an initial EP, Hands (Capitol/ Virgin-EMI) out now, with full-length due in the new year.
Courtney and band worked hard to get the still-filling room into his corner and pulled it off with songs like his initial single, ‘Glitter & Gold’ and even pulled a move out of the Tantrums playbook during hit, ‘Fire’ (heard in the Bradley Cooper chef movie, Burnt as well) by having everyone huddle low on the ground, before exploding up for the song’s chorus. Based on the warm reception he’s received locally, expect a return headlining show, once the album is released.
Soul-influenced indie pop six-piece Fitz and the Tantrums is currently enjoying their biggest success to date, with ‘Handclap’ considered by many as being THE song of the summer and a string of sold-out shows in larger venues, culminating in this leg’s tour closing date at the State Theatre.
The group is out in support of their self-titled third full-length (on Elektra Records), which symbolizes a sort of rebirth into the mainstream as their sound evolves from the retro-soul of their debut and electro-pop of the follow-up.
The band opened with the new ‘Get Right Back’, amidst a stage that would light its decorative rectangle patterns in various pastel neon colors and singer Michael Fitzpatrick was adorned in winter white and co-singer Noelle Scaggs banged a tambourine, in bright sequined jacket.
The mixed crowd stood up, and continued standing from the very beginning of the show, as the band’s music make it hard to remain still. Minneapolis remains a strong market for the band, with Fitzpatrick reminiscing mid-set about previous appearances here, including their first on a bitter cold night at Bunker’s, followed just a few months later by triple-degree heat at the first of three Basilica Block Party appearances - with this night’s show selling out the quickest of any of their dates on the current tour.
Scaggs shone on the “break” songs- ‘Break the Walls’ followed by ‘Breakin’ the Chains of Love’, always moving and inciting the crowd to join along. Musically, the band was tight but loose as always, with sax/keys/guitar player and bandleader James King driving the band’s signature soul/pop sound.
“Everybody’s had this kind of relationship at least once”, Fitz said, introducing ‘Complicated’, which most in the audience seemed to relate to, and which ended with a blazing King sax solo. Hands waved in the sky for new single, ‘Roll Up’ and Fitz introduced initial hit ‘MoneyGrabber’ by saying “it’s all about getting down and dirty with us”.
An hour in, the double-time, clap-happy ‘L.O.V.’ ended the main set with extended jam solos from each of the musicians, but the crowd was vocal in demanding more and was rewarded with a three-song encore. Still constant on the radio, ‘Handclap’ began the extra set, with 2100+ people clapping along in time.
2013’s bluesy ‘6AM’ followed, with the crowd swaying from right to left with the chorus, with the irresistible whistle intro of ‘The Walker’ beginning their final song. “Thank you for making all of our dreams come true”, Fitzpatrick said, prefacing the song which was everywhere in its day, from Oscar promos to video games, and numerous commercials.
With a tour called Come Get Your Love, Fitz and the Tantrums gave just that, to a capacity crowd in a market that’s embraced them since their early days.

FIDLAR sold out the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on November 19th. The band is touring in support of their new album Too (Mom+Pop Records).
The Frights
|
I had never heard of The Frights before but, after last night, they’re all I can think about. Their set felt genuine and it was nothing short of fun. Their music was a little like if Weezer and Modern Baseball had a kid that was raised by the angsty side of Brian Sella, the singer of The Front Bottoms. Their short set had more energy than most headlining acts that I see. I just couldn’t tear my eyes off the stage and just couldn’t stop myself from bouncing up and down to the beat.
SWMRS |
SWMRS was the next to band to hit the stage. I saw these guys a while back and loved them but was disappointed by the way the crowd just stood there and didn’t really seem to care who SWMRS was or that there was even a band on the stage. Oh my how things have changed.
SWMRS’ music is a very upbeat, in-your-face, style of rock n roll. It’s got a classic sound but a unique feeling to it which makes it something memorable. Singer Cole Becker has this truly down to earth feel to him as he addresses the crowd. He felt more like a friend than the frontman of a popular band. When he spoke about his hate for Trump and his love for concerts being a safe place it felt real and genuine, like he truly cares. It’s that kind of personality and energy that turns a good set into a truly amazing set.
Capping off the already amazing night of music was Fidlar (stylized as FIDLAR). I had stumbled into their show about a year ago and instantly fell in love with their quirky look, upbeat music, and high energy show.
This four-piece has a way of commanding a crowd without saying a word. They didn’t have to tell the sold out crowd to jump or even bob their heads. Within the first note, the crowd was going wild. The energy in the venue was electric but it was a laid back kind of electric. Fidlar’s music leans towards the surf punk genre and the crowd definitely helps with that feeling. I couldn’t help but get lost in their sounds and the crowd.
Fidlar is one of those bands that I could never get sick of watching live. They are high-energy and just have a very positive vibe to them. It doesn’t matter what you were worrying about when you walked into their show, the second they start playing you forget about everything except where you are and who you’re surrounded by. Nobody cares if you look like an idiot, nobody cares if you accidentally bump their drink, it’s smiles all around at a Fidlar show and I love that.
Fidlar’s new album Too is out now on Mom+Pop.

Start off December right with Catfish and the Bottlemen at the Myth in St Paul. We’ve been big fans of the British group since we wrote about them in December 2014. Since then, we’ve happily seen the band grow from their humble 7th Street Entry show to overtaking the mainroom at First Ave.
By the way, the popular band recently sold out Wembley Arena.
Anyway, now the band is back in town, doing a year of nonstop touring in support of their new album The Ride.
There are no opening bands listed for the Myth show.
Catfish and the Bottlemen are: Van McCann (lead vocals, guitar), Johnny Bond (lead guitar), Benji Blakeway (bass) and Bob Hall (drums).

Swedish indie rock band The Sounds is currently on their Anniversary tour for Dying To Say This To You, undoubtedly their breakthrough smash hit record. The band stopped by the Fine Line Music Café on Friday, November 18th.
My Jerusalem
|
Despite the first snowstorm of the year, it did not discourage fans from showing up early and enjoying Austin’s My Jerusalem (featuring vocalist Jeff Klein, guitarist Jon Merz, drummer Grant Van Amburgh, and bassist Kyle Robarge). Although the band started in 2009, a rough “opening night” at SXSW, and becoming “buzzworthy” from AOL/Spinner and Apple... the band chose not to play any old songs on their limited set. Instead, they decided to play everything from their new album A Little Death, save for only ‘Born In The Belly’ taken from their previous record Preachers.
For their song finale, singer Jeff Klein spent the entirely of that song walking and singing in the audience, making for a satisfying ending. After their set, drummer Grant Van Amburgh held up a giant photo of Prince, to pay tribute to the late singer who put Minneapolis on the music map of the world.
Zipper Club |
Next up was Los Angeles’ Zipper Club... at their very first Minneapolis show. That is not hard to believe as this is a very, very new band, featuring Mason James (from Cerebral Ballzy), Lissy Trullie (solo artist), and drummer
Damar Davis.
Although they only have two singles (their debut ‘Going the Distance’ and ‘Small Town’), the band had already impressed fans as opener on a number of dates for Tears For Fears and their single ‘Going the Distance’ was the #1 Most Added title this summer.
Their 9-song, 40-min set, featured mostly unreleased songs from their future James Iha-produced debut record, so we couldn’t actually tell you what their official titles were... but songs were pretty upbeat, but had dark themes of running, breathing, talking, and “no regrets”.
To keep it fresh and interesting, their entire set was filled with a custom light show, often showcasing the band’s logo in the background.
The Sounds’ Maja Ivarsson
|
We’ve seen The Sounds (Maja Ivarsson, Félix Rodríguez, Johan Bengtsson, Jesper Anderberg, Fredrik Blond) a few times, but last week’s Anniversary show was absolutely their best show yet. Somehow, the band faithfully reproduced their entire Dying to Say This to You live, and it sounded exactly like it does on the recording.
Perhaps this was because the year prior, when they were promoting Living in America, the band racked up nearly 500 live shows leading up to their debut. With all the touring, the band learned a few tricks about writing songs that sounded great live, and as a result, Dying to Say This to You sounded as if it was written with that intent. The band spent than half of their 200 shows in America, and so the striking cover photo by singer Maja Ivarsson, was just a glimpse of how the Sounds spent their year in 2006.
Even though the record is now 10 years old, hearing the songs again still sounded as exciting and fresh as we heard the record many years ago. Even Ivarsson admitted that they miss playing some of these songs and show loved it when fans sing back these beloved songs.
After the ten songs, clocking in at nearly 40 minutes, the band resumed with various songs from their other albums, including the title track to Living in America.
Absolutely this is The Sounds’ at their finest and you must not miss this Anniversary show, if they come by your area.

Lloyd Cole
English singer/songwriter Lloyd Cole is back in town. He will be headlining the Dakota Jazz Club & Restaurant in Minneapolis this Friday. He will be playing a The Retrospective show
…
|
|
Legendary English singer/songwriter Lloyd Cole made a rare Minneapolis appearance at the Dakota Jazz Club on Friday, November 18th.
According to the internet, the last time Cole was in town, it was over a decade ago at the Fine Line Music Café on 16 July 2004.
Anyway, despite the first snowstorm of the year, people came out, and showed up early, thanks to Cole’s warning earlier that week: “Showtimes this weekend are early. Minneapolis is 7.35 (yes, that means me), and Chicago is 7.00. Be there on time or miss Rattlesnakes.”
Since there were no opening acts listed, Cole would play a double set on this Retrospective show. And as promised, Cole started a little after 7:30pm with two songs from Lloyd Cole and the Commotions’ album Rattlesnakes, including starting song ‘Patience’, a fitting song for those who sat waiting patiently at their table.
Although there were only three ‘Commotions albums ( Rattlesnakes, 1984; Easy Pieces, 1985; Mainstream, 1987), Cole made sure those songs were fairly well represented on this tour. Some of these songs were rarely heard live, so it was a real treat for older fans to hear ‘Lonely Mile’, ‘My Bag’, or the first set closer ‘Jennifer She Said’.
Setlist
|
Two tributes were made on this special show, Cole threw in a Prince cover ‘Sometimes it Snows in April’ (medley with ‘Loveless’), a rarely covered song (from Prince’s lesser-known film Under the Cherry Moon). When Prince passed away, we heard countless ‘Purple Rain’ cover songs... although the song is fine, true Prince fans would note that it is not his best song. The cover choice proved that Cole made the effort to learn the lyrics and chords and he gave a lot of thought in this cover song.
The other tribute was done in honor of the great, late Leonard Cohen. Choosing to avoid ‘Hallelujah’ (‘everybody knows’ that is his weakest song), Cole instead decided to cover ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’ (which, incidentally, was not written on his setlist - see photo). The Cohen song was sung in a way that it was written in a form of a letter and told the story of a love triangle.
Lloyd and William |
After an intermission soundtracked by nothing but Prince songs on the house system, Cole emerged for his second hour-long set with his “special guest”, his son William, who he would later describe as “a young man that looks like me… if I’d been in Echo and the Bunnymen…!”.
Opening the second hour with ‘Don’t Look Back’ was slightly ironic, as this whole Classic Songbook Tour was nothing else than a look back, but the song, stripped to its essence, still resonates with storytelling grace twenty-five years later.
The younger Cole did a fine job embellishing on guitar though would once or twice play a note late, with his wincing face of realization plain that he knew, but his father never acknowledged it, saying “we’re pretty slick” before both strummed the opening of ‘Perfect Skin’.
Before ‘2cv’, the elder Cole explained his “double denim” choice of outfit, as being influenced by a recent trip to Austin, and Cole brought up the fact that many couples in his audiences are unbalanced as to their love for his music (one person in the relationship being much more of a fan) ...which he was all right with, before going into the appropriate ‘Brand New Friend’, melding the song into a verse of David Bowie’s ‘Sorrow’ at the end.
The two-song encore consisted of the bouncy ‘Lost Weekend’ from 1985’s Easy Pieces, and ‘Forest Fire’, a song as its lyrics go, is “a simple metaphor” for “a burning love” and “don’t it make you smile, like a forest fire”, which the two-hour show did, for these die-hard fans.
After his Chicago, the next night, Cole admitted that “Fabulous crowds most everywhere. Thanks to all who came along and made this my most successful acoustic tour to date. We start again on Jan 10th in Brisbane.”

TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB
at Skyway Theatre
Saturday, 11/26/16, 7:30pm ($32.50)
skywaytheatre.com
Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club (not to be confused with Three Doors Down) is back in Minneapolis this Saturday. We caught the band when they played the 7th Street Entry in 2010 and noted that based on the incredibly packed venue: “There was a lot of young people out that bitterly cold Thursday night, and based on how packed the small venue was for a band from Ireland called Two Door Cinema Club, I can tell you that this band is going to be huge. Especially because the band hasn't even released an album yet.”
New Zealand’s Broods will open. We caught them earlier in August 2016 and wrote, “Learning from their humble U.S. debut club tour in 2015, the band’s current shows are a 1000% improvement. With a larger stage to work in, the band had custom lights (with specific sequences for specific songs), smoke machine, and stations for new touring members Camilla, on keys, and their cousin Johnnie on drums.”
This is a really awesome bill (both bands are normally headliners) and cannot be missed.
Tour dates:
11/25/16 Chicago, IL Aragon Ballroom
11/26/16 Minneapolis, MN Skyway Theatre

first-avenue.com
Slumberland Records’ signee Real Numbers is having their Worldess Wonder record release party this Saturday, November 27th. All proceeds will be donated to Free2Be to help LGBTQ youth.
Details:
Release show for our album on Slumberland Records with our dear friends Teenage Moods, Universel & DJ Shawn Reed! What more could you need??
Door $$ will be donated to Free2Be to help LGBTQ youth in the south // Free2Be works to end violence while advocating for the Human & Civil Rights of Sexual & Gender Minorities.
Real Numbers: The Minneapolis trio is tethered to making (distant) pop songs, in a mold that confines them to be terse and bright, sounding like the Desperate Bicycles or even Swell Maps...
Teenage Moods: Teenage Moods shred perfect pop gem songs with such honesty and ease that you can't help but grin until it hurts. Their smart yet ramshackle rhythm section propel skeletal guitar melodies that you think are off-the-cuff until you realize they're classic...
Universel: x-Sleaze / Condominium / Hot Rash / Pisswalker
DJ Shawn Reed: From Night-People Records/ Wet Hair

On a crisp fall evening, we’ve just seen a bright and shimmering star—
Not looking up to the sky or at the super moon, but at a sold out Cedar Cultural Center, as Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora charmed the crowd and showed why she’s destined for bigger things.
UK folktronic singer-songwriter Dan Croll (who is one to watch as well) opened the evening with a criminally short but enjoyable thirty-five minute set of songs from his 2014 full length Sweet Disarray (Deram Records/Universal) as well as some new music set to appear on his next album.
“You’re all SO close… I find it terrifying!” Croll said after a tender ‘Compliment Your Soul’, apologizing if anyone was in the “splash zone” and accidently spit on, while singing. Minneapolis was actually the second US city Croll ever played in, after his first gig in Chicago.
“You can find my songs on the internet… if you have it”, the bespectacled Croll dryly remarked before going into the new ‘Swim’, primarily electronic in structure, but eminently hummable. Croll then switched to guitar to ‘From Nowhere’, his debut single that caught the world’s attention.
Before the closing ‘Home’, he apologized for any overplaying it may have received as a soundtrack for a Home Goods TV commercial. Look for Croll to return to these parts once the new album is released.
The lighting on the woodsy backdrop turned brown to green as Aurora began her 78 min. set with the slowed tempo of ‘Lucky’, from her debut full-length, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend (Decca Records/Glassnote).
We were gutted to miss her appearance at the 7 th St Entry earlier in the year (which sold out quickly as well) but were glad to have this chance to watch her play to a room she’d also obviously outgrown.
The twenty-year is very focused but playful on stage, with closed eyes and her arms moving spastically like Fiona Apple and crack band led by writing partner Odd Martin Skålnes, carefully building song after song into a sweeping brushstroke of icy dream pop.
Though relatively new to the scene, her fans have grown exponentially and become feverishly loyal- handing her original artwork and handmade jewelry as gifts during the set and holding signs up in support, something very usual for a new artist and in this venue.
Between songs, Aurora talked about the horrors of jogging, the amount of Norwegians in the area, and touring with a perpetual cold. ‘Murder Song’, done acoustically with Skålnes showed Aurora’s considerable vocal range, as the crowd remained hushed for the quiet song. ‘Runaway’ left her breathless, the song with its “take me home where I belong” chorus patiently building into its crescendo.
‘I Went Too Far’ is one of her happier songs and the diminutive blonde singer responded by jumping about the stage, like a happy twenty-old only would. The heavily percussive ‘Conqueror’ ended the main set, but the crowd was loudly adamant about an encore and was soon rewarded.
‘Warrior’ was full of big beats and sounded very Scandinavian, then the rest of the band left the stage except for her keyboardist for a quiet final song. “I didn’t write it”, Aurora remarked at the beginning, “but I love the man who did” launching into a tender cover of Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars’.
At her young age and claim that she’s already written over a thousand songs, Aurora is just getting started and those that have been lucky to see her in smaller venues are fortunate, as this bright star is most likely headed to bigger stages and venues.
