Nineties band Teenage Fanclub (singer / guitarist Norman Blake, singer / guitarist Raymond McGinley, singer / bassist Gerard Love, drummer Francis MacDonald, and keys Dave McGowan) made a semi-rare appearance at Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis last week, October 22nd.
Opening up the show was Sam Evian, according to Evian, their first Minneapolis appearance. Although based in New York, Evian is actually signed to Omaha’s Saddle Creek (famous for signing Bright Eyes). The label love Evian so much that they made the great drive from Nebraska to Minneapolis to see Evian play.
Evian, along with Austin Vaughn on drums (from Here We Go Magic), Michael Coleman on keys/guitarist, and Brian Betancourt on bass, played almost everything from their debut Premium album, including ‘Sleep Easy’.
The thing to know about Scottish band Teenage Fanclub is that they actually have three main singers and songwriters: Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, and Gerard Love. That’s quite evident by the first three songs (‘Start Again’, ‘Sometimes I Don't Need to Believe in Anything’, and ‘Verisimilitude’), which saw three different lead vocalist.
Since the new world tour is for Teenage Fanclub’s 11th album Here, they were obligated to play a few songs (‘Hold On’, ‘Thin Air’, ‘The Darkest Part of the Night’, and ‘I'm in Love’), but as you can see from their setlist, they played a lot of fan-favorites - including their biggest hit of the night ‘Sparky’s Dream’ from Grand Prix (1995) and set closer ‘The Concept’ from Bandwagonesque (1991).
It’s been a long time since Teenage Fanclub was last in town... so let’s hope to see them back in the city sooner than later.
Teenage Fanclub’s Here is out now on Merge Records.
