Jessica Hernandez is one of those performers that you just can't keep your eyes off of. She's beautiful, she's expressive, and she's super talented. Add a rocking band with a trombone player and you have a hell of a fun band. The band recently headlined the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on October 14th.
Local group The Ultrasounds opened up the night. Their sound was much more subdued than that of the other two bands but was a great warm-up for what was to come.
Next was Tancred. These guys were just as captivating as Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas but in a completely different way. There must be a thing with the name "Jess" because, not only was Jessica Hernandez's voice amazing, so was Jess Abbott, the singer of Tancred (also the singer of Now, Now, a defunct Minneapolis group)
Jess had an infectious smile that matched her amazing, genuine voice. The way she would smile while singing was enough to give you the warm fuzzies. You could tell she meant what she was singing and, although there wasn't much movement on the stage, there was plenty of energy to fill the venue. I loved the way the trio would look at each other and laugh in between, and even during, their songs.
The music was indie-pop but not generic. There was something about it that definitely stuck with me and made me fall in love with them. Jess' voice was sweet but still powerful. You could understand the words and hear every single note she played on guitar. It was clean and rehearsed but it didn't feel scripted or boring. Even though everything about the sounded perfect, you could tell the band members weren't bored with what they were doing and there was still room for some fun.
Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas, from Detroit, Michigan, were last in town opening for Gogol Bordello. They thrilled crowds then and proved last night that they could pack a venue on their own.
Last night was more than a fun time. Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas took the stage and you instantly felt the mood in the room turn electric.
The way Jessica performs is nothing short of an art. Her face is one of the most expressive faces that I've ever seen fronting a band. It makes you truly feel the music even if you have no clue what the song she is singing is about. The way she moves around the stage gripping the microphone is captivating. She doesn't seem to really have a plan of how she's going to dance during any song but you can tell she is just moving to the music and that can easily make you fall in love with this band.
Even though it's hard to take your eyes off of Jessica, it's also hard to ignore the amazing band that backs her. When watching the members, you can tell that they are truly enjoying what they're doing. They all of smiles on their faces and, in between songs, they will joke with each other while taking sips of their drinks. It's so refreshing to see a band on stage that is truly having a good time. It definitely makes a live show that much more enjoyable.
Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas' music is fun. Think 1960's rock with a bit of a modern flair to it. Hernandez's look and voice remind you of Amy Winehouse but the band as a whole takes it into a completely different direction. It's definitely something different and original and the best part is... it's done well. It's the type of music where, even if you've never heard it before, you can't help but start dancing around.
Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas have been busy playing festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Riot Fest, and oh so many more. Even though their latest release Secret Evil, released in 2014, is their latest release (and happens to be their debut album), they definitely haven't stopped writing new music. Majority of Friday night's set was full of new music that will be on an upcoming album (a release date has not been announced at this point).
