You know we love “Weird Al” Yankovic. What is truly amazing is that, while many of us have not kept up with modern popular music, Weird Al is still on top of things! And not only that, but with recent releases like Alpocalypse and Mandatory Fun, Weird Al is proving that he’s still the king of music parodies. He’s been doing it before the internet, kids.

Even though these are seated shows, everybody stands up. It’s annoying! Also these “theatres” shows tend to start exactly on time and must end before curfew, so show up early if you don’t want to miss a thing.

This is not a typical venue for music: Hall’s Island... but it makes sense for a band as massive as Wilco. They’ve simply outgrown First Avenue’s mainstage and need to play a bigger venue (but not “stadium-size” venues), so a stage in an open field is just perfect for Wilco.

Please note start time: 4:30pm for doors, which means Kurt Vile and his band The Violators will be on stage around 5pm. You will not want to miss Vile, so plan accordingly.

We previously caught Vile at the now-defunct 400 Bar in 2012 and at the much larger Rock the Garden in 2014. We wrote, “Vile, founding member of indie band The War on Drugs, and his band of skinny, curly-haired rockers played an exhilarating 60+ minute set with a smattering of songs from not only his latest release, but also lo-fi gems Childish Prodigy and Constant Hitmaker.”

New Zealand brother-sister sensation Broods (Georgia Nott and Caleb Nott) recently played an early all-ages show Go 96.3-sponsored show at First Avenue’s mainroom. The group is touring in support of their sophomore album Conscious (Capitol Records).

Jarryd James’ Setlist

Opening up the show was Australian singer/songwriter Jarryd James, playing some selected tracks from his debut album Thirty One (which landed #2 on the ARIA Albums Chart). His music was previously released locally, but his U.S. debut EP High came out earlier this year. The record was produced by Joel Little, who previously worked with Broods, and maneuvered the duo to appear on James’ standout track ‘1000x’. For that song, the Nott siblings came out to play.

James ended his set with his debut sing ‘Do You Remember’, which had some audiences singing along to his signature song.

Broods is back with their danciest/happiest (but lyrically filled with darkness and sadness) second album Conscious (Capitol Records). We previously reviewed the record, noting that “if you like to dance and if you like to sing along, you will love this album. The beats and the lyrics are easy to remember, and there are sure to be huge crowds of people singing and dancing along to these songs in cars and on dance floors everywhere.”

What Broods delivered is pretty much their entire Conscious presented live, with only a few old favorites from Evergreen thrown in near the end. From past experiences, usually this means that the band has really grown away from when they started and just really eager and happy to show us their new and current music.

Learning from their humble U.S. debut club tour in 2015, the band’s current shows are a 1000% improvement. With a larger stage to work in, the band had custom lights (with specific sequences for specific songs), smoke machine, and stations for new touring members Camilla, on keys, and their cousin Johnnie on drums. Although it would have been nice to get Tove Lov to help sing on ‘Freak of Nature’, Camilla filled in nicely.

To keep with the dark and light theme that they have with Conscious, singer Georgia and keys Caleb first appeared on stage in black outfits. After their two-song acoustic set (‘All of Your Glory’, followed by ‘Taking You There’), the stage’s lights went out and the two quick re-appeared in brand new white outfits. We’ve seen costume changes before, that usually requires a brief intermission - not this rather lightning quick costume change. We believe that the two had those costumes already under their clothes the whole time.

Broods ended their 75-min set with their lead single ‘Free’ from Conscious. The song got huge applauses from the audience, indicating that this may be Broods’ hit song, even though their three-song encore ‘Four Walls’, ‘Bridges’ and ‘Couldn't Believe’ also got just as massive cheers.

Conscious is out now on Capitol. Check back after August 28th, as we are also hoping to provide additional coverage at Emo’s in Austin, Texas. Stay tuned.

R.I.P. Taylor Tolle (The Carnegies)

Taylor Tolle, the singer and guitarist of The Carnegies, was killed (with his passenger Anjuli Kerlin) in a single-car crash on Interstate 90 in eastern South Dakota, according to startribune.com.

Authorities have not explained why Tolle’s car rolled over, but it seemed like they were in a hurry to get to Sturgis, South Dakota, and wanted to “to make it there by sundown” according to Kerlin’s comment on Facebook.

We caught the band earlier in May 2016, and wrote, “The Carnegies featuring the Mars brothers (Royce on drums, and Roman on bass) and Taylor Tolle on the guitar who played retro-fueled blues/psych rock...”

We had just learned that folk singer Glenn Yarbrough passed away at his home in Nashville on Thursday (August 11th) at the age of 86. Yarbrough was the founding member of one of the most successful folk group of the early ‘60s, The Limeliters.

Fans of Breaking Bad may recall hearing The Limeliters’ ‘Take My True Love by the Hand’ on one of the most memorable episode ‘Ozymandias’.

According to Rolling Stone, Yarbrough’s health was in decline starting in May 2016.

In other death news:

Dean Martin’s youngest son Ricci Martin (not to be confused with Ricky Martin) was found dead at his home in Utah at the age of 62.

Two members of the Hungarian rock band Locomotiv GT (abbreviated to LGT) died recently: drummer József Laux on August 6th at the age of 73 and bassist/vocalist Tamás Somló died in July 19th at the age of 68 to cancer.

Singer Alan Vega of the duo Suicide died in his sleep on July 16th at the age of 78. His death was announced by his friend Henry Rollins.

Canadian punk band White Lung (Mish Barber Way, Kenneth William, and Anne-Marie Vassiliou) just headlined the Triple Rock Social Club last night, Saturday, August 6th... touring in support of Paradise (Domino Records). According to Mish the songs for this record are more story-centric and that the older songs have taken on more of a meaningful insight.

Greys

Toronto’s Greys (Shehzaad, Cam, Braeden, Colin) opened up the show, touring in support of their sophomore album Outer Heaven (Carpark Records).

It was hard to say who was more excited about a good old fashioned punk rock, the guys or the gals. The Greys came out and said hello and then erupted into a frenzy of some head banging tunes ‘No Star’, ‘Guy Picciotto’ and ‘The Voyeur’ rocked the Triple Rock crowd. The dancers in front were just banging away.

Some High points in their set for me was ‘If It’s All the Same’ and ‘I'd Hate to be an Actor’, just some fun good time on those two songs. They ended the set with ‘Complaint Rock’, with the singalong chant “I hate it, I want it, I need it, I love it”. Overall a very good set, kept the crowd interest going and wanting more.

Post script: they played a 45-min set of the power punk rock music. The band has the day off today (Sunday) and contemplated on seeing Suicide Squad. Then they asked if anyone in the audience had weed... to, you know, help them get through the movie. Update: from their Twitter account it does look like they got to watch the film on Sunday.

Also worth mentioning, it is cool to name a song after the guitarist from Fugazi.

Mish Barber Way

White Lung’s fourth album Paradise has been on various ‘Best Albums of 2016 So Far’ lists (including Consequence of Sound, Stereogum, Spin, and Bandcamp). Based on the title, her dance moves/hand gestures, and their recent cover of Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Used To Love Her’ on SiriusXMU, singer Mish Barber Way definitely is drawing a lot of inspirations from a young Axl Rose.

There were some technical difficulties at first, but that was soon fixed with some outstanding songs. You can't help but be mesmerized by Mish’s hand gesturing and dancing... she moved to the sound of the amazing guitar playing from Kenneth. They opened up the show with ‘Face Down’ and that set the stage for the growing crowd banging on the floor to be prepared.

After the lights were turned down per secret signals, the stage had a darkened mood. By the time ‘Below’ came out, the floor was dancing all over. After that song, Mish asked why does it always open up on this song. She also stated that they love coming to Minneapolis and enjoy playing here.

Some other highlights of the night were the three song ‘Take the Mirror’, ‘Paradise’, and ‘Bag’. These songs just stood out for me because of Mish’s dance and movements and gestures.

Another interesting thing I like about the band is their name is “White Lung” (which was probably named as opposite of black lung disease from coalminers). By the time ‘Demented’ and ‘Drown with the Monster’ Mish demonstrated she has a wonderful set of ‘white’ lungs. Many of the singers I know today would not be able to keep the smooth sound that she has throughout the show. It’s just beautiful and the way she moves, you can tell she wants to be a part of the festivities on the floor. I have to say overall it was very enjoyable to watch and be a spectator of the dance going on the floor.

Also wanted to say that Anne-Marie that was some awesome drums going on in the back ground.

Paradise is out now on Domino Records. White Lung continues their current concert tour on the West Coast then they hit the Festival Circuit in September and October.

Leeds, UK singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae breezed into First Avenue in Minneapolis over the weekend, for a joyous set that would turn highly personal towards the end.

Mina Moore

Opening the evening of soulful music was local favorite Mina Moore (aka Yasmina Moore-Foster), who has been staying quite active of late. In addition to her own music and prepping a full-length debut, she can also be seen singing backup for Doomtree and BFF Caroline Smith, on occasion.

She and Smith collaborated on Moore’s biggest song to date, ‘Amanhã’, about meeting an old acquaintance and noticing how they’ve changed; the parenthetical title of which is ‘Helaina’, her younger sister’s name as Moore likes to name songs after friends, family, and people close to her.

Corinne Bailey Rae’s return to a local stage was long overdue (she thought she was last here in 2010, but I couldn’t find anything more recent than an Aug 2006 show at the Varsity Theater) and she began her hundred-minute set of effervescent joy with the new ‘Been to the Moon’, a proper introduction to third full-length album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers (Virgin EMI Records), just released mid-May.

“So good to see you all, what a pleasure to be here”, she beamed, wearing a sleeveless one-piece pink dress and big smile, with her tight four-piece backing band surrounding her in a half-circle around the stage.  Known on radio for more demure folk soul songs, her live persona is more energetic and voice has much more range and depth, than one might expect.

2010’s ‘Closer’ from The Sea, set the groove tempo with her personal lyrics and the rhythmic backbeat of the song and that expanded vocal range was evident near the end, with Rae cooing then rising her volume effortlessly.

“You may have noticed some signing over here in the corner,” she said pointing to a sign-language interpreter, “this is another way to interpret the songs” “you can watch the story that’s being told as well”, Rae revealed as a few of the hearing impaired applauded in appreciation.

An early set cover of Bob Marley’s ‘Is this Love?’ from her 2011 Love EP was effective and won Rae a Grammy, but many in the crowd were secretly hoping instead for the EP’s first track, a Prince cover.

‘Green Aphrodisiac’, co-written with twin sisters and Minneapolis natives Amber and Paris Strother from KING and just revealed as one of the tracks on President Obama’s summer playlist, completely fit the tone of a warm and humid August night.

‘Paris Nights/New York Mornings’ bubbled with Camera Obscura-like enthusiasm, ‘Hey, I Won’t Break Your Heart’ was quiet with some of Rae’s most vulnerable lyrics, and ‘Stop Where You Are’ was all about living in the moment, starting sparsely but crescendo-ing into a Coldplay-esque end chant.

Rae’s initial breakout song ‘Put Your Records On’ (amusingly abbreviated on the setlist as ‘PYRO’) predictably launched recording cellphones in the air and got even the most casual fan in the diverse crowd, to sing along with the chorus.

The chanting and clapping from final main set song, ‘The Skies Will Break’ carried over and through into the single-song encore, with the band amused and joining in as they retook to the stage.

“This city is so special to us in so many ways”, she said, “this is where Prince is from” likely silently remembering his early support of her, his time spent mentoring, and even flying in to attend her first US show in 2006

‘Do it All Again’ was skipped from the setlist, in favor of playing only an impassioned ‘Like a Star’, her debut single from 2005, on which emotions got the best of her towards the end, with Rae breaking down and crying, though never actually stopping the song.

Explaining that “the person that I wrote this song about… it would have been their fortieth birthday today… so that’s the whole reason it’s a special day to me”, as Rae remembered her first husband Jason, who tragically passed away in 2008 of an accidental overdose.

Quickly catching her breath and composure, the smile nervously returned, singing “Just like a star across my sky, just like an angel off the page; You have appeared to my life” as the song finished.

The cool had returned just in time, though Rae proved she’s as human as anyone else, when it comes to love and loss.

Corrine Bailey Rae remains on the road through the fall, playing a few UK festivals before returning on the bill for a run with Alabama Shakes, then a brief co-headlining run with Andra Day.

What’s in a name?--

For a band or musician, it should be something catchy memorable, or encompassing of their musical vision.  Some bands have rather forgettable or hard to search names (The Men, NO, any band with “white” or “wild” in their name), though any pre-Internet band (like Travis, Gene, or The The) should be given a pass.

Some, despite their ubiquitous name are worth searching for, and so is the case of electronic duo HONNE and opener JONES, who played over the weekend in Minneapolis at the Triple Rock Social Club.

When Grammy-favorite Sam Smith calls your music “f*#king beautiful” to his 6.5 million Instagram followers, you know you’re probably on to something.  London singer Cherie Jones, who goes by the moniker JONES, showed us just what that meant, opening the evening with a brief twenty-five minute culled from last year’s Indulge EP and full-length, New Skin (due Oct 7^th, via 37 Adventures).

Joined only by a guitarist, JONES musically comes from a dreamy r&b/indie pop sound that has similarities to Solange, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Leona Lewis, with vocals as smooth as newly spun silk. Apparently a fan of one-word song titles, ‘Deep’, ‘You’, ‘Hoops’ , ‘Melt’, and the set-closing ‘Indulge’ (that had the audience clapping along) all shimmered with an elegant sheen amidst vulnerable lyrics and heartbroken themes.

Though HONNE (本音) is actually a Japanese word meaning "real intention", the Somerset UK electro-Northern Soul duo of frontman Andy Clutterbuck and multi-instrumentalist James Hatcher;  is anything but from Japan, though they do seem to emit their “real self” and “true meaning” into their music, which also fits the description of the word.

The group, rounded out as a live band by Naomi Scarlett on backing vocals, Duayne Sanford on drums, and Amadu Koroma on bass guitar, plays a mostly mid-tempo pop/blue-eyed smooth soul blend that sounds like vintage Quincy Jones producing James Blake and even harkens back to late ‘80s bands like Johnny Hates Jazz, Breathe, and Deacon Blue.

The opening ’Warm on a Cold Night’ was appropriate playing in a location that knows all about temperature extremes, ‘Good Together’ showed its subtle gospel influences, and ‘The Night’ started sparsely on piano, before flowering into a widescreen song that was reminiscent of some Curt Smith-sung Tears for Fears songs.

Though only beginning their US tour, ‘No Place Like Home’ (from their 2015 Over Lover EP), a mid-set song about homesickness echoed effectively with the help of JONES, who was brought back on stage, to reprise her verses from the recorded version.

British singer Izzy Bizu wasn’t available to tour, so HONNE did the next best thing to end their main set, as backing vocalist Scarlett more than filled the part on the collaborative single, ‘Someone That Loves You’.

Chants of “one more song” were answered in triplicate as the encore began with only Clutterbuck and Hatcher returning, and Clutterbuck saying, “we’ve just come out to tell we can’t play one more song…” to jeers, then redeeming himself by exclaiming “… we’re gonna play three more songs!”

The slower ‘Woman’ (released by the band on Valentine’s Day) was a swooning ballad, prompting the band to ask audience members to hug each other mid-verse, ‘Loves the Jobs You Hate’ turned into a bass showcase by the nimble-fingered Koroma, and ‘All in the Value’ shone some sunshine despite the somber synths and lyrics about a relationship breakup.

With larger festivals taking up most of the band’s fall dates, HONNE only seems to be moving upward, and expect the buzz for JONES to continue as her debut album releases this fall.  Despite the relatively simple names, some musical acts are still worth the extra search for.

From Late Late night, to mid-afternoon on a Midwestern dock—

Fresh from an appearance a few days before on The Late Late Show with James Cordon, Swedish singer LÉON found herself along the banks of Lake Minnetonka, for a promotional radio appearance near restaurant 6Smith in suburban Wayzata.

The event was part of local station Cities 97’s Live at the Lake series, taking place over happy hour on Thursdays at local lakeside restaurants during the summer.  After an opening piano set by Keri Noble (also the station’s morning drive time co-host), LÉON and her keyboardist took to the small stage under a canopy for a short five-song, twenty minute set.

“I’m so excited to be here—this is my first time in Minneapolis”, she beamed, dressed appropriately for the warm weather in short sleeve dark blouse and above-the-knee navy skirt.  Singing in English more precise than most Americans, her relationship lyrics and slightly smoky voice charmed the happy-hour crowd. Her first recorded foray is the four-song Treasure EP (Columbia Records/Sony), with full-length to follow soon.

The statuesque 22-year old Swede began the afternoon with the EP’s title track, a video of which, has just debuted online.  Lyrically, like Tove Lo, she gets sometimes brutally honest, not afraid to mix a curse word or two in to get her point across, as on the un-recorded and unreleased song, ‘For You’.

Mid-set, she tried her hand at a Fleetwood Mac cover, calling it “one of my favorite songs- I listened to this, like every day”, she said before admirably interpreting the Stevie Nicks vocals, for her own stripped version of the radio classic.

She wrapped her set, with initial single ‘Tired of Talking’, with she prefaced by explaining how nothing much was happening a year or so back in Stockholm, and so she was urged by her producer, Agrin Rahmani to release something on SoundCloud to stir interest.  This was a notion she was initially against, but in the end relented, resulting in the song charting over twenty-nine million plays and counting, on Spotify.

Coming from a musical family (the daughter of a composer and a cello player) and estimating she composed her first song at age 8 or 9, it’s clear that LÉON has music in the blood.  Her catchy single, radio-ready voice, and sturdy good looks, make her one to watch as her already finished debut album, gets released soon.

Monday in Minneapolis means movies, music and more!

Never minding the above alliteration, these are the so-called dog days of summer but get an early week respite every Monday in August in downtown Minneapolis with a Walker Art Center-sponsored Summer series of Music and Movies, presented outdoors in the heart off the city in Loring Park.

For this year’s first installment, legendary  Hüsker Dü founder and co-songwriter Grant Hart played an hour-long set in between sets from DJ Jake Rudh and before The Beatles movie A Hard Day’s Night.  The event coincided with the 35th anniversary of the recording of Land Speed Record in the 7th St Entry and was a related event to the Walker exhibition Chris Larson: Land Speed Record on view through January 8, 2017.

Hart and new band, The Glandolinian Army Band (though it was billed as Grant Hart Associated) tore through a set of primarily Hüsker Dü and Hart solo material, with the singer in a good mood and cracking jokes to the picnic blanket crowd perched on the sloped lawn.

Hart began his set with 2009’s ‘Reflection of the Moon on the Water’ but not before he queried the audience about co-sponsor Suburu’s cars, and joking “how come I got stuck with The Beatles… anyone out there sick of The Beatles?!” during the intro.

The first Hüsker Dü song, ‘Terms of Psychic Warfare’, wasn’t from Land Speed Record, rather from 1985’s New Day Rising, and the new band (Dylan Richie and Timothy Alleick) adapted to the song well.

‘Is the Sky the Limit’ and ‘Shine Shine Shine’ were the first to represent Hart’s last studio effort, the sprawling 2013 album The Argument.

Hart joked about the popcorn available for sale for the movie, from the co-op grocery tent located nearby- “it’s free, right?” he questioned and when they shook their heads otherwise and held up two fingers, he replied, “peace to you too, free popcorn over there, it’s peaceful too”.

The latter half of the set was mostly Hüsker songs, including ‘Green Eyes’, a staple of Hart’s live shows, and 1985’s ‘Flexible Flyer’, a Hart-penned tune from his former band’s fourth album, Flip Your Wig.

Hart and band ended their set with ‘No Regrets’ from his 2009 album, Hot Wax prefacing it by saying somewhat deadpanned, “here’s one of our favorites, we hope you like it too”.

If you missed the outdoor concert, Grant Hart and his band returns to the stage again next Monday in Minneapolis, at the 7^th St Entry, where the 35^th anniversary of Land Speed Record is celebrated and two-thirds of Hüsker Dü reunites as part of a related panel discussion.

Jarryd James opened up the show. The Australian singer/songwriter recently had a U.S. album debut with High, produced by Joel Little (Lorde, Broods), Mikky Ekko (Rihanna, David Guetta), Tobias Jesso Jnr (Adele, Sia), Pip Norman (Troye Sivan), and Andrew “Pop” Wansel (Alessia Cara, Tory Lanez.)

Broods was last seen in Minneapolis in 2015 at the Fine Line Music Café.

Georgia and Caleb was joined on stage by Camilla and Johnnie.

Entire set was mostly new songs from their latest Conscious album.
