Rising alt-pop duo Oh Wonder’s first major US tour in support of their self-titled album took them to First Avenue in Minneapolis last Friday (June 3rd).
Opening up the show was Los Angeles’ LANY (which stands for “Los Angeles, New York”). We’ve previously seen the popular trio (Paul Klein, Jake Goss, and Les Priest) with Zella Day in 2015: “People were singing along to every word and swaying back and forth to every note. The girls in the crowd were swooning over the singer, who may as well have been a model.”
LANY’s fanbase has doubled since their previous appearance. These young, dedicated female fans took over the dance floor in front, armed with custom signs (most of them reading “ILYSB”, standing for “I Love You So Bad”, and directed towards singer Klein).
They played most of their popular, early singles (‘Made in Hollywood’, ‘4ever!’) to their latest ‘Where The Hell Are My Friends’, which started their 35-min set. Every songs were sung back from the fans in front, and it’s clear to the trio that they need to come back to Minneapolis. Klein said that they’ve been all over the world on their tour, but Minneapolis was always the best.
Highlight of the show was during the telephone intro to ‘ILYSB’, Klein grabbed a homemade sign from the audience and held it up during the performance. After the song, and hearing the screams, Klein jokingly asked if the audience, “Could you guys come back tomorrow?”
Oh Wonder has been selling out most of the more populated cities on their first U.S.A. tour, and it’s a good indication that they may have to come back at bigger venues. If you were lucky enough to have caught them at the incredibly packed show last Friday, you’ll realized that this is probably the smallest place they’ll play in their career.
There were a lot of people there interested in checking out the duo: Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West (for their live shows, they’re joined on stage by Ethan on bass and Frank on drums). Their music is downbeat, slow-groove, R&B, alt-pop songs, sounding a little like their contemporaries London Grammar or Haelos.
This was Oh Wonder’s first time in Minneapolis, and they were incredibly pleased at the turn out and also the historic nature of the venue (it is often associated with Prince as the venue was used often in the film Purple Rain).
Of course, with only one album under their belt, the band basically played their entire album live. Hits like ‘Lose It’ were done early in the set, Unforgotten theme song ‘All We Do’ played mid-set, and saving new single ‘Plans’ for the encore.
