“I don’t have any idea what day it is… it’s Thursday?!, shut up, I thought it was Tuesday!”
This is one of the rigors of the road when you’re sent on a large promotional tour and John Rzeznik, lead singer from The Goo Goo Dolls was no exception, stopping to ponder for a minute as he played on the bow of a boat on the shores of Lake Minnetonka near 6Smith restaurant in suburban Wayzata.
The happy hour solo acoustic mini-set was sponsored by local station Cities 97 as part of their summer weekly Live at the Lake series and in support of The Goo Goo Dolls’ latest album, Boxes (Warner Bros Records) released just last month.
Rzeznik and the band have been doing a lot of promotional stops and TV appearances (Today show, The Talk, Conan); some with the full band, some solo, so it’s no wonder his head is slightly spinning.
“This is such a beautiful place… our band has been coming here forever”, Rzeznik mentioned after the opening ‘Rebel Beat’, dressed casually in jeans, a gray v-neck t-shirt, and aviator sunglasses.
New single ‘So Alive’ was next, co-written with Greg Wattenburg (Train, Five for Fighting, O.A.R.) who also co-produced and played on much of the new album.
Stopping for a quick interview after the song, Rzeznik admitted to songwriting being “ninety-nine percent terror” for him, though he is very proud of most of the songs on this, their eleventh studio album.
After a well-received ‘Name’ (which went Top 5 in 1995), Rzeznik played another new track, ‘The Pin’, which he co-wrote with Drew Pearson, half the writing team for Phillip Phillips’ massive hit ‘Home’.
Finishing with 2000’s ‘Broadway’, Rzeznik was then convinced to play a short game of “Never Have I Ever”, a bit cribbed from The Ellen show, revealing that he’s accidently set his hair on fire, his go-to karaoke song is likely a Van Halen song, and fears about catching a cold via his microphone.
Los Angeles indie-pop singer Genevieve (Schatz) , formerly of Chicago indie rock band, Company of Thieves, opened the afternoon with an earlier set and The Goo Goo Dolls embark on a long summer tour of mostly outdoor amphitheaters, alongside Collective Soul, including a July 30 stop at nearby Mystic Lake.
