Nashville singer and songwriter Adia Victoria is currently on tour in support of her debut album Beyond The Bloodhounds (Canvasback Records), stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last Wednesday, June 15th.
The show started with Brooklyn’s quartet Big Thief (Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, James Krivchenia, Max Oleartchik), who got big buzz as when their Masterpiece album came out on Saddle Creek on May 27th. Although the record just came out, the truth is that singer Lenker already had a solo album, Hours Were The Birds under her belt.
Of course the Big Thief set included many songs from Masterpiece, including the title track and ‘Lorraine’, many of these songs are slow, touching songs. Lenker looked and sounded painfully shy the whole time, especially when she tried and hide behind her hair.
Finally, midset, Lenker asked the audience to come closer to the stage, which they were more than happy to obliged.
Adia Victoria must love to play live, you can just tell by her exaggerated movements and singing songs from Beyond The Bloodhounds.
Victoria seemed really happy to play the 7th Street Entry (which is the smaller room for the historic First Avenue), as she is a big Prince fan. When he passed, she wrote, “Rest in power, prince. thank you for the art, and for never letting the world figure you out. #PurpleReign”
As expected with only one album, Victoria played almost everything she’s ever written on Beyond The Bloodhounds in her hour-long set, including ‘Mortimer's Blues’ and ‘Howlin’ Shame’, which she dedicated the song to victim Trayvon Martin.
The way Victoria danced and swayed on her set, it felt very much like she is a natural performer... completely at home on stage.
Beyond the Bloodhounds is out now on Canvasback Records.
