American/British band The Kills made a stop at First Avenue in support of their highly anticipated fifth album, Ash & Ice (Domino Records). They play songs from this album and their other albums that span their almost decade-and-a-half career. Regardless of the song, the band was full of energy and the crowd was definitely into it.
The show was opened up by Los Angeles rock band L.A. Witch. Although these guys are fairly new to the scene, their music is polished and their show is very well put together. There is definitely that raw and bloody emotion coming from L.A. Witch's music just like you get with The Kills.
The trio (Sade Sanchez, Irita Pai, and Ellie English) played almost everything they’ve recorded, including ‘Get Lost’ and ‘Heart of Darkness’ (from their self-titled debut EP) and latest 7” single ‘Drive Your Car’. Musically, the moody band sounded like Mazzy Star (vocally) with The Black Angels and BRMC psychedelia.
From the second The Kills took the stage, there was an energy radiating off the stage unlike anything I had ever felt before. I talk about how important it is that bands be energetic and get people moving and feeling something, The Kills is the best example of a band that does this with, what seems to be, no effort.
Alison Mosshart (aka “VV”) stormed across the stage with so much attitude that you almost had to take a step back. She is a tall, slender, drop dead gorgeous woman with such an amazing set a pipes on her that she almost seemed too good to be true. She was mesmerizing to watch as she moved to the music. She had the crowd completely captivated by her movements and her gorgeous voice. There were a few brief moments where she would go to the back of the stage for a sip of water or to sit for a minute but even then, I couldn't take my eyes off her. Her presence was just something that you cannot put into words. and it truly took my breath away. Her male counterpart, Jamie Hince (aka “Hotel”), was just as entertaining as he played the guitar with so much passion that it was clear he was loving being on stage and playing.
They played for an hour and then came back onstage to play an additional handful of songs. All in all, they were probably on stage for about an hour and a half but honestly, it felt way shorter than that.
The Kills’ Ash & Ice will be out June 3, 2016, via Domino Records. Their remaining tour dates:
