Australian singer/songwriter Matt Corby is currently on a US national tour in support of his debut album Telluric, stopping by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis (for the first time) on Sunday, May 22nd.
East Coast folktronica Overcoats opened up the show. Apparently the duo (Hana Elion & JJ Mitchell) only found out they were going on tour just days (May 18th) before their first gig last night in Chicago. They seemed really happy to be on tour, which you can hear from their voice whenever Hana or JJ would speak.
The two harmonized throughout their brief 30-ish set, playing everything from their self-titled debut EP, and also throwing in a new single ‘Nighttime Hunger’ and a cover of Hozier’s ‘Cherry Wine’. The latter came about when the two girls spent two months in Dublin, Ireland, and for a night played at an Irish Festival (probably Longitude Festival?), which Hozier was one of the festival’s headliners. Backstage, JJ spotted Hana flirting with a guy, asking him what it was like to write ‘Take Me To Church’. JJ had to tell Hana the bad news: the guy was really their sound guy, Shamus, not Hozier.
Overcoats had a great sound, and based on the audience’s feedback, they certainly made some new fans on their first night playing in Minneapolis.
Matt Corby is a big deal in Australia. His first big break was with his 2011 EP Into the Flame, which peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Singles Chart and eventually certified 6× Platinum. His debut album Telluric, which came out 11 March 2016 via Universal Music Australia, reached #1 on the ARIA albums' chart.
Corby’s music style is hard to put in a neat box, he’s folky with a soulful voice, but with the added flute, he sometimes inspired a psychedelic sound with a world jazz fusion beat. Whatever genre it is, fans are certainly in love with his songs.
Since it was Corby’s first time ever in “Dinkytown” Minneapolis, he felt obligated to tell us that he’s actually never seen a ‘sorority’ before Sunday night. When a fan later asked why it took him so long to come here, he responded by saying why haven’t the audience flown to Australia to see him play? Jokingly, of course, but he does have a point.
Corby’s hour-long set ended with ‘Souls A’Fire’, taking a brief break backstage, before returning back on stage for a 15-min, two-song encore. For ‘Empires Attraction’, it was medley in with Sam Cook’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’... although you wouldn’t know it until you hear the main chorus line.
Matt Corby’s debut album Telluric is out now. His remaining USA tour dates below:
