Saturday night was a packed house at the Skyway Theatre for Between The Buried & Me and August Burns Red show.
Between The Buried & Me’s music is chaotic. Take a little bit of jazz, a little bit of blues, and mix it with a whole lot of metal you might have something somewhat close to what these guys are putting out. There are moments when singer Tommy Rogers plays riffs on the piano that make you feel like you are about to watch some musical but then guitarist Paul Waggoner comes in with some sweeping guitar solo and you are reminded that you are at nothing less than an amazing metal show.
There is not much banter between the band members which completely blows my mind. The music is so complicated and at times it feels like each band member is playing a completely different song. You would think that they would have to interact in order to make sure they all come together when need be but not these guys. They are each in their own little world and although the music sounds like a cluster at times, it all comes together in pure harmony.
These guys played songs from almost all of their releases. They even played a song that dated back to 2001. The crowd was eating it up. Regardless of what year or album the song was from, the crowd was loving it. They demanded an encore from BTBAM and got just that. After playing for a good 45 minutes, BTBAM came back on stage and played “Selkies: The Endless Obsession” as one last hoorah. Even after that, the crowd lingered as they chanted “one more song” but the band never came back out.
August Burns Red was co-headliner on this tour. These guys have been touring for years and years (much like BTBAM) and always impress the crowds with the amount of energy they have on stage. The way singer Jake Luhr is able to command the crowd is a sight to see. What's more impressive is the way he is able to scream without losing his voice. The deafening screams echoed throughout the venue and anyone who was sitting out by the merch tables quickly found themselves drawn into the auditorium portion of the venue. August Burns Red had an unusually long set and were able to play a little bit of everything which definitely kept the crowd interested. No matter what “era” of ABR they were playing, Jake kept it absolutely intense.
The crowd was intense as the pit opened up and kept on getting bigger and bigger. At one point, Jake had the crowd split for a “wall of death”. A wall of death is when the crowd splits in half and then on the singer’s word, they run at each other and hope not to die. This is always fun to watch as people slam into each other and bodies go flying. Security was on it. As soon as Jake made the motion for the crowd the split, the guards were up on the barricades with eyes open just waiting for someone to get hurt. The crowd couldn't wait and before Jake even started the countdown, the walls had hit. This definitely wasn't the best wall of death I had ever seen but it's always a sight to see regardless.
Opening the show was Good Tiger. This is a super group featuring ex-members from other bands. Even though they have only been a band for less than a year, the crowd was completely in love with them and was near motionless as they listened to the amazing vocal talent of singer Elliot Coleman (ex-Tesseract). The notes this guy can hit are pop music worthy. He moves effortlessly between the high notes and the low growls. Mix this with the talent of Alex Rudinger (ex-The Faceless) on the drums you have what is sure to be a new metal band that takes the scene over. Make sure you check them out because they are unlike anything I have ever heard. It's different, clean, and refreshing.
Between The Buried & Me’s latest Coma Ecliptic is out now on Metal Blade.
