Domino young artists Alex G, Porches, and Your Friend, recently played in Minneapolis at 7th Street Entry on Wednesday night (April 6th). The tiny room was filled with young, eager fans.
Kansas’ Your Friend (stage name for Taryn Miller) kicked off the event with some gentle songs from her debut album Gumption. Miller is joined on stage by Christopher (guitars), Drew (synths), Kyle (bass), and Nicholas (drums).
As Miller mentioned on stage, all their layered songs were from Gumption, including the title track as her set closer.
Philadelphia’s Alex G (Alex Giannascoli) and Porches were co-headliners, but Alex G closed out the night. The main problem with him is that he shared the same name as pop girl singer Alex G and producer Alex Greggs - who often use Alex G as credit.... Although, doing research on his name, apparently he also goes under as Sandy Alex G, but the billing was simply listed as Alex G for this show.
Giannascoli played some upbeat/energetic songs from his Domino release Beach Music, however, he did start off his set with an old song “Soaker” from DSU.
New York’s Porches drew the biggest crowd of the night, thanks to his highly anticipated 80’s inspired new record Pool. If you didn’t know, Porches is the stage name for Aaron Maine, a charismatic young singer who wrote and recorded almost everything on his record in his new, tiny Manhattan apartment.
Maine was a lot of fun. He would say things like “This is the best! You guys look crazy good,” but then would jokingly talk about his fictional upcoming “erotic novel about a girl with a toe ring.”
During the long tuning process before the song that they introduced as “Don’t Cry For Me Ricky Peppi”, bassist Maya Laner asked for jokes to keep us entertained. She told this, “What do you call a computer in the ocean?” Answer: “A Dell rolling in the deep”.
The rest of their set included some tracks from their new album Pool, including the title song and “Underwater” (which, personally I dislike the heavy use autotune).
Porches ended his set with “Permanent Loan” from his Slow Dance in the Cosmos album. It would’ve been epic, but apparently his guitarist “f***d up the solo.”
