We’ve been following acclaimed UK rockers The Struts for a while now, and admitted that they weren’t quite ready to head their show at First Avenue in September 2015, because (at the time) the band only wanted to play a few songs for the US market. This included only seven songs (plus one encore), but they managed to fill out an hour. This is because of extended live version... plus singer Luke Spiller had three costume changes, making for a fun, entertaining show.

This time around, the band finally released their debut Everybody Wants and will be adding additional songs on their set. Recently, the band showcased a cover of The Vaccines’ “I Always Knew” and Drake’s “Hotline Bling”, combined with their single “Kiss This”.

Opening up the show will be our favorite Made Violent. We previously caught the trio (singer/bassist Joseph White, guitarist Rob Romano and drummer Justin Acee) in May 2015 and looked forward to their second appearance in October 2015.... but history would have it that their van broke down. When pressed about why they put up with the struggles of constant grinding and touring, Romano said, “We can’t wait to hop in our sh**y van and drive across the country to play for anyone and everyone. Two things really matter to us – making as much good music as we can, and touring as much as we can. We never want to stop doing this.”

Made Violent also finally released some Eps (Made Violent and Wasted Days) last year via Columbia Records/Startime International.

The co-headlining show of Foals and Silversun Pickups will be arriving to the Myth in Maplewood, Minnesota.

Foals recently scored their first #1 Alternative radio single with “Mountain At My Gates”, from their acclaimed fourth album What Went Down... so expect the crowd to go nuts when they play that song live. Find out why Q Magazine gave the band “Best Act in the World” in 2015.

It is pretty much all-Wizard World all weekend! W♥M will be bringing you extensive coverage of the three-day event - plus the traditional kick-off free event at the Mall of America on Thursday.

The Wizard World Comic Con’s “Kick Off the Con” event will take place at the Rotunda at 6pm and will feature Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and James Marsters (Spike, from Buffy).

Glasgow indie rock band Frightened Rabbit just played the Varsity Theater in “Dinkytown” Minneapolis on Wednesday night, touring in support of their latest Painting of a Panic Attack (Atlantic Records).

Caveman

New York’s Caveman (not to be confused with San Francisco’s Caveman Sound or rapper Caveman) opened up the show.

It’s true, as mentioned by singer Matthew Iwanusa, that the band had not been to Minneapolis for “quite a few years”, referring to their last appearance in June 2013 touring in support of their self-titled album (which we covered).

The indie band’s set featured many tracks from their forthcoming Otero War (Fat Possum Records), from the solo heartfelt “The State of Mind” to layered music sound of “Never Going Back”. In fact, only a few songs ‘old’ songs were played on their 40-min set, including “Old Friend” from CoCo Beware and set closer “In the City” (from Caveman). The finale was a good choice as fans may remember actress Julia Stiles appearing in their music video.

If you’re curious about Caveman’s Otero War, they are slowly trickling out some selective tracks via their Soundcloud.

Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit (singer/guitarist Scott Hutchison, drummer Grant Hutchison, bassist Billy Kennedy, keyboards Andy Monaghan, and guitarist Simon Liddell) was last in town with fellow Scotts Twilight Sad at the Varsity Theater in 2013... so they’re familiar with Dinkytown and its surroundings.

Setlist

Their setlist featured some newer songs (which they felt ‘duty-bound’ to play) sandwiched between classic older fan-favorites like “Holy” and “The Modern Leper” (beginning of their set) to “The Oil Slick” and “Old Old Fashioned” (the ending of their set).

With “The Modern Leper”, Hutchison jokingly said that the song was “old enough for Harry Potter” reading level... then backtracked to something younger, like “Goosebumps”.

Hutchison was pretty talkative, possibly out of necessarily because it seemed the band was always switching music instruments or tune. For “Break”, he talked about how a fan misheard the lyrics as “Breath” and jokingly introduced the song as “Breath”. To be honest, with his Scottish brogue, I honestly misheard him saying “Brick” instead of “Break”.

As we explained in the podcast, the new album’s title Painting of a Panic Attack is about singer Scott Hutchison’s panic attack on an airplane. His experience inspired many of the themes and songs from the new album. As we also mentioned, this translate to really sad and unpleasant lyrics, over a layered “wall of sounds”.... which funny enough, is also similar to other Scottish bands like the Twilight Sad and We Were Promised Jetpacks. So if you like those other bands, chances are Frightened Rabbit will be right up your alley.

The highlight of their set was a medley of Prince’s “Purple Rain” with “Die Like A Rich Boy” on a solo acoustic song for the start of their encore. Clearly, the band is a fan, and they telegraphed it earlier in their set when they were tuning on “Things” and Hutchison talked about how he regretted only seeing “Purple Rain” film about a year and a half ago.

The Hotline Spring Tour, featuring Magic Man, The Griswolds, and Panama Wedding, made a stop at The Varsity Theater on Tuesday night and entertained the young crowd with the indie-electro-pop sounds of all of the bands.

Panama Wedding

The show started with Panama Wedding, a New York based synthpop band fronted by Peter Kirk. Kirk has a beautiful voice that is matched perfectly by the subtle but upbeat instrumentation of the band. Apparently Peter used to be a solo act which totally makes sense, but the addition of the band just gave their music a little extra something that kept the crowd entertained throughout the half hour set.

The cover of The Killer’s “When You Were Young” that Panama Wedding did was beyond perfect and just another example of how great Peter's voice is. It's not easy to hit some of the notes in that song and Peter did it absolutely flawlessly.

The Griswolds

The favorite of the show seemed to be co-headliner The Griswolds from Sydney, Australia. This band had the crowd in the palm of their hand and for good reason.

The last time I saw these guys was when they opened up for New Politics last fall and I knew they would be something big. Their music is perfect. It's grungy when played live but still approachable for the college kid demographic that came out to the show.

There's a reason why Kevin Ray of Walk the Moon claims to be an honorary member of the Griswolds. It's quite clear that these guys are on their way to becoming one of the next groups to hit the Walk the Moon level.

Heartthrob singer Christopher Whitehall had the girls in the audience screaming as he took the stage. They played for almost an hour and played majority of the songs off of their debut album Be Impressive (Relativity, Wind-Up Records). They were also able to slip in a few new tunes that proved they are going to stay true to their sound and that they will continue to release poppy songs with a little bit of edge to them.

Magic Man closed out the show, playing selections from their two albums Real Life Color and Before The Waves (both available on Columbia Records). This electronic-pop group from Rhode Island definitely had the energy of a headliner. From the moment the music started to the very bitter end, they kept the energy up and kept the crowd jumping up and down with their poppy sound and upbeat tempos.

Their music is very indie electronic and features a lot of keys and other miscellaneous sounds but Alex Capow's vocals prevailed over everything else. His voice is a bit smoother than many of the electronic bands out there. He sounded like a straight up pop singer but because of the instrumentation behind him, the overall sound was extremely unique and enjoyable.

The Hotline Spring Tour continues in May.

Fat White Family is possibly the last, greatest, punk band in the world. I can attest to that, having witnessed their highly entertaining, drunken show, that all stories you’ve read are true (guitarist Saul Adamczewski was once kicked out of the band, while touring in Paris, frontman Lias Saoudi gets naked on stage, etc...)

Dilly Dally

Co-headlining the show was Canada’s Dilly Dally (not to be confused with The Dilly Dallies), currently on tour for their debut album Sore (Partisan Records & Buzz Records).

The garagey band (singer/guitarist Katie Monks, guitarist Liz Ball, bassist Jimmy Tony, and drummer Benjamin Reinhartz) played pretty much everything on Sore, including “Snake Head”, “Green” and “Candy Mountain”. The latter was actually a 7” available exclusively from Fat Possum Records - the label that Fat White Family is currently signed with.

Monks had little to say on their 40-min set, other than that she was upset (her exact words, “pissed off”) before the gig, and now she’s feeling much better.

Fat White Family (and ‘intoxicated guest’)

Before I talk about England’s Fat White Family, I have to tell this story. I got to the door, standing behind two grown men who were being refused entry on account of being too “intoxicated”. As it turned out, those two men (as seen on FWF’s photo), is actually in the band! Too funny.

The band mostly dressed in Army Surplus-wear, reminding me of early S*M*A*S*H or Manic Street Preachers imageries, and they sound a bit like the Sex Pistols and The Fall (yes, they even have a song called “I Am Mark E. Smith”).

Despite the lateness (last minute soundcheck pushed their set time to 10:15pm), extremely low light, all the drinking (Saoudi probably opened/drank four beers, including one that a fan bought him during the show), Saoudi taking off his clothes (thankfully, keeping his pants on), smoking on stage (smoking is banned in venues... but I guess technically they can plead ‘artistic performance’) and sound difficulties... by all account this should be the worst show. But it’s not, this band actually sounded pretty great. I love the militant singing, the constant bass and crashing, noisy guitars, throughout their 45-minute set (with no encores).

Fat White Family’s sophomore album Songs For Our Mothers is out now on Fat Possum Records. See the band live to experience the madness yourself... the sooner, the better.

Headlining at the Triple Rock Social Club on Monday night was Beach Slang. This Pennsylvania group is fairly new to the scene having just formed in 2013 but it was clear that they have already gained an extremely loyal fanbase.

Micah

Not originally listed on the venue’s website (or shown on the tour poster): Micah (of Two Cow Garage) kicked off the show.

Micah Schnabel is a singer/songwriter from Ohio. No, he’s not that at all actually, he’s a storyteller who happens to stand on stage with a guitar and make his voice sound pretty. Micah’s style is something that truly cannot be explained through words. It’s almost like the guitar is the background music to his beautifully written lyrics. Honestly, screw the guitar... he didn’t even need it. It just seemed to make him a bit more comfortable on stage. His voice isn’t polished sounding, it’s not auto-tuned, hell, some of the time it’s not even in tempo with what he's playing on the guitar but that’s what made it so perfect.

Micah’s lyrics are perfect. He even has a line in one of his songs about when you hear a song and you feel like it’s written just for you.... that’s how every single one of his songs hit me. Each time he sang a line, the hairs on my arms started to stand up. His lyrics are so personable that at times it kind of sounds like he is pulling the thoughts right out of the dark places in your head and saying them aloud. Like his lyric about wanting a face tattoo but it would break his mother’s heart. Who uses that line in a song? No one. Who has had that thought before? Pretty much everyone (okay, maybe it’s just Micah and I but I’m sure there’s more).

Dyke Drama

Dyke Drama was the second band to play last night. These guys were perfectly imperfect. There’s really no other way to explain it. Much like Beach Slang, these guys seemed to be having fun on stage and didn't take themselves too seriously. Unlike Beach Slang, these guys didn't seem to take the music too seriously either which sounds terrible but it really worked for them. This gender bending group is the brainchild of Sadie Switchblade of G.L.O.S.S. and, although it is technically a solo project, the touring members of this group had great chemistry and made it a fun set to watch.

Potty Mouth

Northampton-based quartet Potty Mouth was next. These guys (or rather girls) had a much more “California” vibe to them. Their music was slow but not boring and their demeanor was very calm and chill. They did not sound what I thought a band named “Potty Mouth” would sound like. Although at times their music leaned towards the grunge style, there were no obscene lyrics or anything. Like I said, think “California Calm”. It’s the kind of music you could listen to while on the beach with your girlfriends getting day drunk and hitting on the cute boys.

The members of Beach Slang seemed just as shocked as I was at the sheer amount of people that came out to see them on a Monday night. It wasn't a sold out show but it sure was packed for this new band. Once they started playing, it all made sense. I understood why so many people decided to venture out on a Monday night to see them.

The band members themselves just seemed like super fun guys. That sounds really lame but that’s definitely something that will make me instantly fall in love with a band. Although they took the music seriously, they didn’t take themselves seriously and that makes it easier for the crowd to loosen up and just have a good time.

These guys only have one full length album out and it felt like they played majority of that release along with a couple covers including a beautiful cover of The Replacements’ “Can't Hardly Wait” and “Bastards of Young”. Their covers didn’t just copy whatever band they were covering, they sounded completely like Beach Slang. That’s when a cover turns into something magical. I knew that they didn't write that song but because they didn’t just get up there and completely copy The Replacements, I will remember how their version sounded because it caught me. It was unfamiliarly familiar and it was perfect.

The tribute to the ‘Mats made sense, because they are huge fans of the Replacements and got Tommy Stinson produced their debut Find People Who Feel Like Us (as they previously mentioned last September), available now Polyvinyl Records.

The “Savage Imperial Death March Tour”, featuring British metal band Napalm Death, American punk/metal band The Melvins and Japanese noise artists Melt-Banana, recently came to First Avenue in Minneapolis.

Melt-Banana

The show started off with Melt-Banana. Currently the band is a duo, featuring singer Yasuko Onuki and guitarist Agata. Just a little backstory on why Agata wears his signature surgical mask, it is because he’s prone to have noise bleeds during his intense live performances.

Like their previous appearances, Onuki had her digital software controller (to trigger drums and other strange sounds) and Agata had his complicated guitar setup, which included an impressive arsenal of pedal effects and their patented amp-feeding-into-amp (they often bring their own amps on tour). The result is Melt-Banana may be one of the loudest band around, and they’re proud of that fact.

Their music was fast and loud. There was one point where Yasuko said they were going to play six short songs rapid fire. She wasn't kidding about the short part. These songs seemed more like excerpts from songs being that they were only about fifteen seconds long each. Even when the songs were longer than fifteen seconds, they were fast and powerful.

Second to play Sunday night was The Melvins. These guys have a huge following in Minneapolis. I truly thought they were from here but apparently that's not true at all, people up here just really, really like them and you could tell by watching the crowd.

King Buzzo

Singer and guitarist Buzz Osborne, aka King Buzzo (dressed in an illuminati robe), and was joined on stage by bassist Steven Shane McDonald and Dale Crover (the latter two wearing t-shirts with their first name). Fun fact, McDonald is normally the bassist to the legendary Redd Kross.... and was probably the reason why the Melvins covered “Frosted Flake” on their set.

The Melvins is hard to classify musically. They are a little punk, a little metal, a lot of sludgy stoner rock, some experimental... Regardless of how you want to classify them, they had the crowd completely captivated. As soon as the music started, the crowd was headbanging in perfect time. It almost looked like waves or something.

I couldn't help but watch the crowd during the whole set. The crowd was so excited to see this legendary band play and almost instantly, the mosh pit broke. It wasn't as extreme as some of the pits I have seen but it kept growing and growing with every song and eventually, majority of the floor was a giant stoner pit of people just casually bumping into each other and shoving each other.

People were screaming and shouting at them in between songs but as soon as the music started, the crowd would go silent as to respect the art and give The Melvins the attention that they more than deserved.

Highlight of their hour-plus set was when Napalm Death’s Shane Embury joined them on stage to help add an extra double bass to “Night Goat”... this was medley with “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” as Crover stepped out from the drum kit to sing the song with the audience.

Headlining the show was Napalm Death. I've dreamt about the day I will finally get to see these guys live and last Sunday night was everything I wanted it to be.

Napalm Death has been around forever. They started in 1981 and have been around ever since. These guys were probably the most classifiable band of the night. They were metal, with a little bit of punk, a little bit of grind... well crap, now you understand why the phrase "soiree of weirdness" is a perfect way to explain the music of last night.

Their lyrics, if you can actually understand them, make you think. Some are political and some just really make you question other people's views on the world and even your own views. It was great to see this emotion displayed live and even more amazing to hear Mark explain what some of the songs were actually about. When he explained the meaning behind some of them, you could just hear the passion in his voice and it made you feel passionate about the music they were putting out there.

These guys have put out 16 full length albums thus far (with no end in sight) so obviously they couldn't play everything. They did a great job of mixing old and new music along with a couple covers including a Dead Kennedys (“Nazi Punks F**k Off”) and a Cryptic Slaughter cover (“Lowlife”) ... which the crowd went absolutely bats**t over).

The Savage Imperial Death March Tour was originally to end this May 7th at the Troubadour in Los Angeles... but based on strong interest/sold out status, the band added two additional shows (May 8th and May 9th). All Los Angeles dates are now sold out.

Indie rockers The Besnard Lakes will be back in Minnesota at the Turf Club in St Paul on May 3rd. We’ve seen the band a few times, the last was probably their best appearance, opening up for Ride in September 2015 and we wrote, “then, in darkness, the band emerged playing a layered, atmospheric, psychedelic, shoegazing music that went over well with the audience.”

The Canadian band is touring in support of A Coliseum Complex Museum (Jagjaguwar).

Portland’s Chris Pureka is on tour for her latest album, Back in the Ring. This is Pureka’s first studio full length since 2010’s critically acclaimed How I Learned to See in the Dark.

When pressed about the lengthy time between release, Pureka responded, “I’m not interested in releasing songs I can’t get behind or records I don’t love.”

Opening up the 7th Street Entry show next week will be Anna Vogelzang, in support of her new record, Hiker. The new record was produced by Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Andrew Bird) and is coming out on May 6th.

Vogelzang’s voice and music has been compared to Ingrid Michaelson and Brandi Carlile.

Wild Nothing (aka Jack Tatum) will be making a stop at the Triple Rock Social Club on Monday, May 2nd in support of his third album, Life of Pause. This album was recorded with Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) and packs a punch.

Tatum previously played in Jack and the Whale and FACEPOINT but has found his success with Wild Nothing (est. 2009). It's easy to tell why Wild Nothing received "Best New Music" from Pitchfork back in 2012 and ended up on many year-end lists. Come see for yourself!

She has just released her sophomore album Wabi-Sabi (Ba Da Bing Records) and currently touring with her husband and bandmate, Dan Duszynski, in support of the record. Closing out the event will be local Roniia (stylized as RONiiA). This is the group lead by Nona Marie Invie, who you may know was from the popular Dark Dark Dark group.

Supergroup The Rides is the project of two time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stephen Stills (you know, the “Stills” in Crosby, Stills, & Nash - and sometimes “and Young”), five time Grammy nominated guitar great Kenny Wayne Shepherd and celebrated Chicago rock/blues keyboardist Barry Goldberg. Mellowdrone frontman Jonathan Bates is back headlining as Big Black Delta. He is touring in support of his sophomore album Trágame Tierra (out now). The tour kicks off May 1st at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis.

We previously caught Big Black Delta in March 2014 and wrote, “Tracks played during their 40 min. set were all from the debut, coursing with dark energy on the hitting ‘Put the Gun on the Floor’, with Bates jerking about while cuing up loops and beats, pacing the stage as Hornbrook drummed without abandon. ‘Side of the Road’ pulsed with laptop beats, while closer ‘IF**KINGLOVE YOU’ started somewhat gospel-centrically, before it unwound into an electronic melee of sounds and beats, to close their impressive set.”

White Denim, having recently released Stiff, is currently on tour.

We wrote about White Denim before they released their debut album in 2008: “White Denim is comprised of three men from Austin, Texas. They have a quite distinct rock sound, which immediately reminded me of The Hives and The Ramones. Their somewhat hard-rock/edgy tone produces some very catchy drum patterns.”

Eventually they came to town, and we were more than happy to check them out in November 2009 and noted, “crazy pyschedelic, garagey, experimental rock 'n roll - with minimal lyrics. Whatever singer James Petralli spouted out, it didn't matter because you were so in awe of his amazing guitar-playing ability.”

Opening the show will be multi-instrumentalist Sam Cohen. Cohen is formerly of Apollo Sunshine and leader of Yellowbirds. Cohen recently released Cool It, which Pitchfork said was “an American Lennon with some Dylan affectations”.
