Little Fevers played to a packed house on Saturday night at Amsterdam Bar & Hall in Saint Paul. They were the first of three local bands to take the stage and wowed the audience.

Little Fevers is a twee pop band from right here in the Twin Cities. Their debut album, Field Trip was just recently released. It was recorded with Matt Boynton (Beirut, MGMT) and mastered by David Gardner (Black Lips). After seeing these guys live, it makes sense why such big names are backing this band.

Singer Lucy Michell has one of the most amazing voices I have heard in quite some time. It's beautiful and calm but powerful at the same time. You can hear all types of influences when Lucy starts singing. There are times when it sounds like Bob Dylan in female form and then other times when it sounds like something you could heard on the radio.

The sound of the band as a whole is polished and perfect. It's very poppy but at times, because of Lucy's voice, it can sound almost alt-country. It's very sweet music, again helped by Lucy's vocals, but still deep and thoughtful. Each song was upbeat and dreamy but not the type of dreamy that puts you to sleep, more the dreamy that makes you want to bob your head and keep listening.

Communist Daughter was the headliner of the night. These guys are a force to be reckoned with in the local music scene. The band is fronted by John Solomon, formerly of local band Friends Like These. These guys have a much more up front indie-pop-rock sound than the sound of Little Fevers. That being said, these guys still rocked the show and played a great set.

Their music has become a staple in the indie rock scene in the Twin Cities. They've been played on the Current radio station multiple times and their shows are always very well attended. Last night was no different and it was a perfect chance to break my Communist Daughter virginity.

tiny deaths played in between Little Fevers and Communist Daughters. tiny deaths is a band that is quickly gaining the popularity they deserve in the cities. Their music is indie but with more layers than the average indie pop rock band due to the amount of vocal looping they use. The vocals can be haunting at times but because of the powerful drum beats and the beautiful guitar sound, they band itself doesn't have a haunting sound.

Tiny Deaths are releasing their first new single, Ever, in over a year on Monday, December 7th. The crowd last night got a sneak peak of this single and let me tell you, you will want to jump on this. The song was catchy and got the crowd, as well as me, excited. These guys are definitely going to be a breakout group of the Twin Cities soon!

The crowd was nothing short of attentive throughout the show. Usually I find this super boring but last night, it was perfect. Last night was a perfect chance to stand back and take in the local music scene of the Twin Cities. We really do have some of the best local music around.

Irish songwriter and actor Glen Hansard just played the State Theatre in Minneapolis on Friday, November 20th.

Aoife O'Donovan

Opening up the show, was Crooked Still's Aoife O'Donovan playing some folky/storytelling songs from her latest solo album Fossils, including set opening song "Lay My Burden Down", "Oh, Mama", and "Beekeeper".

She played a couple of new songs, like "Hornets", which she said she played recently when she hosted (along with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz) at the A Prairie Home Companion show in October 2015.

After her Joni Mitchell cover song "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" (to be released as a B-Side on this Black Friday Record Store Day 7" single), she is joined on stage with Thomas Brosseau, who provided piano for the rest of her 30-min set.

Glen Hansard

We've seen Glen Hansard before, but never quite like this. He's joined on stage by a large ensemble (see entire cast and crew photograph below), including both a horn and wind instrument section. Familiar The Swell Season songs were suddenly shown in a new, livelier, and possibly improved, versions of these classic songs.

Hansard also added snippets of popular songs into his various songs, but my personal favorite was hearing a couple of lines from Prince's "When Doves Cry" ("maybe I'm just like my father/maybe you're just like my mother/she's never satisfied") on "Lowly Deserter".

Setlist

The band stuck to the setlist, right up until the encore, where some changes were made. They decided to play an old Frames song "Say It to Me Now" (with Glen Hansard playing in the balcony to the real Kristen's mother from Dublin), followed by The Swell Season's "Falling Slowly" with opener Aoife O'Donovan, who stood in for Markéta Irglová's part.

O'Donovan stayed in for the rest of the encore, with the entire cast & crew (including guitar tech Mic) singing off-mic for Brendan Behan's "The Auld Triangle"... making for a very satisfying ending.

However, that wasn't the end of the show. With only three minutes left before curfew, the band made a last-minute decision to come back on stage to play "Her Mercy". They did break the curfew by a few minutes, but it was worth it seeing Hansard singing "Mercy! Mercy!" with his hands in the air like it was some old-time religion.

Glen Hansard's latest album Didn't He Ramble is out now on ANTI- Records.

Savannah, GA's Kylesa will be stopping in at the Turf Club in St Paul on this Black Friday, in support of their latest Exhausting Fire.

In writing Exhausting Fire, the trio found themselves culling inspirations before getting together in various permutations at various times to wade through the amassed collections of riffs and ideas stockpiled before, during and after the punishing Ultraviolet tour schedule. Band member Phillip Cope described the record as, "an album we really put our hearts on our sleeves for. We’ve always done that, but emotionally, it’s probably the most honest and raw album we’ve ever done."

We're not sure what Canadian Lights is up to since her last appearance in Minneapolis in February 2014, but we know The Mowgli's is touring in support of their second LP Kids In Love (Photo Finish/Republic Records). We previously saw them when they were touring for their debut album Waiting for the Dawn (Photo Finish) at First Avenue and Triple Rock Social Club, both in 2013.

Special guest K.Flay to open. We previously caught her at the Go Show #1.

We previously caught local Hippo Campus at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival 2015 and noticed they have a lot of fans here. We weren't surprised that this upcoming all-ages show is sold out.

The show is their homecoming gig, having just wrapping up a national tour from Philadelphia to Omaha in support of their most recent EP South (Grand Jury Records). Since hitting #1 on the Alternative Specialty Chart and heavy rotation on Sirius' Alt-Nation, the band found themselves selling out populated cities, like Chicago, Philadelphia and Brooklyn.

Opening up for the First Avenue show will be Bad Bad Hats (who recently sold out the 7th Street Entry) and Danger Ron & The Spins.

The Royal Concept is returning to Minneapolis tomorrow, November 22nd, at the Nether Bar (inside Mill City Nights). The Swedish bandwas previously in town at the Triple Rock Social Club in December 2013

Although their concert poster clearly lists Parade of Lights as national support act, the Venue website only lists New Yorkers Tribe Society as sole opener.

I can confirm with you that we are excited that Parade of Lights will be playing the Nether Bar on Sunday. The Los Angeles (and Las Vegas) quartet is touring in support of their debut album Feeling Electric, which came out this Summer via Astralwerks (which I've previously mentioned is always one of my favorite record label).

We previously caught the band in 2014 and described their show as "a buoyant set of fresh songs" and "nicely polished, incredibly catchy, and very radio-friendly, buoyed by solid electronic and traditional percussion."

Local JT's Jazz Implosion has a residency at the Icehouse every Monday. For this Monday's show, they are presenting "Jen Shyu's Solo Opera Solo Rites: Seven Breaths", featuring Jen Shyu and drummer JT Bates.

New York's Jonah Parzen-Johnson will also be at the show, lending a hand with his baritone saxophone and synthesizer, currently on his second tour of 2015. Parzen-Johnson's latest is a travelogue, Three Reasons To Live Here, which was created as a result of spending nine weeks on tour.

Here's how the publisher described the book:

In the introduction to his travelogue, Three Reasons To Live Here, Brooklyn based saxophonist and composer, Jonah Parzen-Johnson, starts pretty big. “I want to be part of a community of people whose first allegiance is to empathy and mutual understanding.” After the release of his album Remember When Things Were Better Tomorrow in June 2015, Jonah spent 9 weeks on tour, mostly by himself. “I wanted something to do on the road that would mark the time, and immediately connect me to people I ran into as I hit different cities.” By the end of the summer, Jonah had collected three reasons to live in 34 cities in the US and Canada. “In the end, the idea is pretty simple. "The New Lennon and McCartney", Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook (billed under their popular band name Squeeze) will be playing an acoustic set across America this November. The exciting news is that they have a new album called Cradle to the Grave... featuring their first new songs since 1998's Domino.

One half of Squeeze, Tilbrook was recently in town last year, playing tracks from his acoustic solo album Happy Ending.

After selling out their November 24th show at the Cedar, they quickly added another date (November 25th), which also quickly sold out. If it wasn't for the fact that Thursday (November 26th) wasn't Thanksgiving, I'm sure they could have 'squeezed' in another additional date....

St. Louis based Bottle Rockets took over The Turf Club, in St Paul, on Wednesday night with their iconic alt-country/ rock music and a whole lot of energy.

Bottle Rockets are considered to be one of the leaders of the Alt-Country/ Roots Rock revival that took place in the 1990's. They came out with their first release, Bottle Rockets, in 1992 and haven't stopped since. They have released 12 albums (including one live recording), and were featured in the PBS documentary The Mississippi River Of Song: The Grassroots of American Music.

Their latest album South Broadway Athletic Club was released in October of this year on Bloodshot Records. They focused on this album at the show. After playing a couple songs from previous recordings, the band played South Broadway Athletic Club from start to finish. By the time they played the eleventh and final track off the album, the crowd was warmed up as Bottle Rockets played some of their old favorites.

Each song played was about everyday life. It was about the mundane but, because of the pure talent on the stage, it was enjoyable and kept you interested. It was also very upbeat, although some would consider the music to be country, it seemed to have a lot more southern rock influence than most country music out there.

The crowd was an older crowd and much calmer than what I'm used to but they were all very respectful of the musicians on the stage. Even when opener Molly Maher & Her Disbelievers were on stage, everyone in the crowd had their eyes on the musicians and their hands on their beers.

Opener Molly Maher is a bit of a staple in the Twin Cities music scene. Her voice and music has so much soul in it that it's a bit much to take it all in your first time seeing her. She has shared the stage with legends such as Los Lobos and Lucinda Williams so seeing her in such a small venue as The Turf Club was a bit of a treat.

Molly Maher's latest release, Merry Come Up, was released in 2011 and produced, recorded and mixed by Eric Koskinen (who was also originally listed to open, but did not play) at Realphonic.

Copeland made a stop at the Varsity Theater on Tuesday night in support of their new album Ixora released on Tooth & Nail Records.

The last time I saw Copeland was about ten years back at the House of Bricks in my hometown of Des Moines, IA. These guys announced a final tour in 2008 and that was it... until they released Ixora in October of last year. Then boom, they were back at it touring consistently and playing to crowds bigger than they did back in the early 2000's.

Copeland's sound is relaxing and soothing. Aaron Marsh, vocalist, has a voice that just puts your heart at ease. Add the powerful piano lines, a string trio, and expressive drums, guitar, and bass, and you have an amazing live show.

Although the string trio was hidden towards the back corner of the stage, they seemed to really add something to the music. It added the depth and emotion that you got from Copeland's earlier releases. That's something I never got from their live shows years ago. Not that those were bad shows, but last night they were really able to express the emotion that their songs emit and the crowd was feeling.

Copeland played a great mix of new songs and songs that dated back to their debut release Beneath Medicine Tree which came out in 2003 on The Militia Group. It didn't matter what song these guys played, new or old, the crowd sang along to every word.

We Are The City

We Are The City was the opening band of the night. WATC are a trio from Vancouver, Canada who recently released their third full length album. This was their first U.S. tour and they are definitely turning heads on it.

WATC have a unique sound that seemed to catch the crowd off guard but kept them captivated. The sound is part pop, part weird prog rock, part indie, all talent. At some points during their songs, you really have no clue what's going to happen. It sounds like a train wreck but the most beautiful train wreck you have ever heard and then, right when you're ready for a massive explosion, they bring it back together and it sounds like a normal indie-pop song again.

Their newest album Above Club was released on Tooth & Nail Records on Friday, November 20th and was available for a "pay what you want" fee at the show.

Also opening the show was Eisley, an indie rock band from Texas consisting of four siblings and their cousin. Singer/ rhythm guitarist Sherri DuPree-Bemis is the wife of Max Bemis, frontman for the iconic pop-punk band Say Anything. Eisley has been releasing music and touring since 2005. In 2013, they released their newest album Currents on Equal Vision Records.

Folk storytellers Suzanne Vega and Duncan Sheik are currently tour, stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center last Sunday, November 15th.

Vega and Sheik previously collaborated in a play called "Carson McCullers Talks About Love," which was about the life of the writer Carson McCullers (known for her debut novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and The Member of the Wedding). Vega must still love it, that she decided to dedicated a three-song section to the writer in the middle of her set (but we'll get to that later).

Duncan Sheik

Kicking off the co-headlining show was Duncan Sheik, with the help of drummer Doug Yowell and keyboardist Jason Hart.

Judging from the banters, Sheik must have had a wonderful, amazing time, in 2009, touring with Vega throughout Europe... resulting in memorable songs "Circling" and inspiring "Birmingham".

For "I Don't Do Sadness", Sheik is joined on stage by Vega and Gerry "Spooky Ghost" Leonard. The song sounded fuller and upbeat, thanks to Leonard's guitar-embellishment... and it definitely did not sound anything like Sheik's self-confessed "self-indulgent singer/songwriter songs".

Sheik's Setlist

The majority of his set featured some songs from his latest Legerdemain (Kobalt Music), including "Selling Out", "Avalanche", "Photograph", and that UK-inspiring "Birmingham" song.

Sheik ended his set with a song he wrote for American Psycho The Musical called "This is Not an Exit". The London production of American Psycho received mostly positive reviews from critics, thanks to some inventive original Sheik songs and some cover songs. According to Sheik, the play will hit Broadway this March 2016, so American fans can finally enjoy American Psycho on the stage.

Suzanne Vega and Gerry Leonard

Storyteller Suzanne Vega played the Cedar in May 2014. For that tour, she was promoting her latest Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pantacles (Amanuensis Productions), so it made sense that the majority of her set was from that record. For this current tour with Sheik, she decided to do a New York themed show (billed as "Songs from New York City - From Bleecker Street to Broadway").

Vega, with Gerry Leonard, started her set with "Marlene on the Wall", a song about a poster of Marlene Dietrich that hanged on Vega's room. All of Vega's songs had meaning to her, but half the fun is coming up with your own stories.

Also, as we previously mentioned, a block was dedicated to "Carson McCullers Talks About Love", which Vega previously played the part of McCullers (complete with e-cigarette used as a prop for "Harper Lee"). The latter song is more about her jealousy on Lee's successful To Kill A Mockingbird

Near the end of the set, Vega played my personal favorite song from Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pantacles, "I Never Wear White". Apparently, I wasn't the only one that loved the song, as there were a few hoots and hollers from the audience for this song. Of course, no Vega is complete without with one of her hit song "Luka", which served as set finale.

The encore was a lot of fun. Duncan Sheik and his band joined Vega and Leonard on stage to play Sheik's biggest hit "Barely Breathing". Sheik handled the lead vocals, while Vega provided some backup singing. Sheik did not leave the stage, instead, the band played out to Vega's "Tom's Diner" - the DNA Remix version! I don't know how Leonard and company did it, but they somehow reproduced the DNA version.

Off topic, but Vega had one of the best tour merchandise: a Tom's Diner mug. This is a heavy ceramic white mug, slightly curved, and feels great in the hand. It featured the fictional Tom's Diner logo. As you know, I visited the real Tom's Restaurant (which the song is based on) in New York in 2001.

On Saturday, November 14th two Canadian bands, Yukon Blonde opening for Hey Rosetta!, played a show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis.

Yukon Blonde's set

Yukon Blonde, based in Vancouver, had played the Twin Cities and this club in particular before, though in 2011 as the headliner. At that time they were touring in support of their first self-titled album and their subsequent EP Fire/Water, and their sound could only be described as bright, almost unbearably catchy indie pop. Their music was characterized by great hooks and beautiful harmonies.

This time they played a set mostly from their new album, On Blonde, which is quite different from their earlier material. It adds dance beats and has fewer vocal harmonies. It is dynamic and dancey, and feels much less retro than their earlier material, especially their first album. They were well received, by both their fans and those new to the band. They played for 45 minutes, including 7 songs off their new album, 2 songs off their 2012 album Tiger Talk, and one song from their first full length self-titled album released in 2010.

Hey Rosetta!'s set

Hey Rosetta!, who were formed and are still based in St. John’s, Newfoundland at the entire other end of the country, followed with a set that lasted just over an hour and a quarter (including their encore).

Since the 7-piece band (featuring Tim Baker, Phil Maloney, Adam Hogan, Josh Ward, Romesh Thavanathan, Kinley Dowling and Mara Pellerin) is currently celebrating their 10 Year Anniversary as a band, this current tour served somewhat like a "Greatest Hits" tour, drawing heavily on their most recent release, 2014’s Second Sight (7 songs), but included tracks from all their albums. There were 3 songs from their previous release 2011’s Seeds, 3 from their 2008 release Into Your Lungs, 1 from their first full length release 2006’s Plan Your Escape, and 1 from their holiday EP A Cup of Kindness Yet.

Their set was a representative display of their beautiful multi-instrument anthemic chamber pop. Their band members played a variety of instruments including cello, violin, keyboards, and xylophone-like instruments, as well as drums, and electric guitars and bass.

Hey Rosetta! recently unveiled a new music video for "Trish's Song", taken from their latest album Second Sight. You can watch it on vimeo.com. The video shows singer Tim Baker alone with a piano, but slowly featured backup vocals from various band members.

Overall the Triple Rock Social Club show was a fine concert by two Canadian bands that each deserve far larger followings.

Everything old became new again, if only for a night, as the spirit of 1960’s Minnesota rock ‘n roll was alive and well at a packed book release party.

The celebratory event was held at the Electric Fetus record store in Minneapolis last week, promoting of Everybody's Heard about the Bird: The True Story of 1960s Rock 'n' Roll in Minnesota by local author  and longtime newspaper man, Rick Shefchik, and featured all-out party music from the likes of The Gestures, The Trashmen, and The Del Counts to an overflowing crowd.

The book itself is a behind-the-scenes, up-close-and-personal account, relating how a handful of Minnesota rock bands erupted out of a small Midwest market and made it big. From Augie Garcia and Bobby Vee to The Trashmen and The Castaways, Everybody’s Heard about the Bird reveals how this monumental era of Minnesota rock music in the 1960s evolved.

Author Shefchik both MC’d the event as well as signed books (along with all the musicians present) and all 150 copies brought, disappeared to eager buyers, within minutes.

The first set of music was from Mankato’s The Gestures, who ended up acting as the “house band” and were inducted into the Minnesota Rock & Country Hall of Fame, in 2008.  Contemporaries of The Beatles, the band opened their short set with the Fab Four’s ‘Things We Said Today’. Arnie Marshall took the lead for The Shirelles’ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ (co-penned by Carole King)

After a Gerry and the Pacemakers cover, the band ended their short set with their own ‘Don’t Mess Around’ and national charting hit, ‘Run, Run, Run’.

Trashmen

Members Tony Andreason and original bassist Bob Reed of the legendary Trashmen were coaxed on stage next, for a two-song hit parade of Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis songs, though unfortunately did not play the song the book was named after.

Del Counts

After a short break, the Gestures returned with Del Counts guitarist Steve Miller to blaze through Chuck Berry’s ‘Let It Rock’ and a cover of ‘Let the Good Times Roll’ which the Del Counts had also recorded as a 45 for Soma Records back in the day.

The Gestures closed the evening with a slower Gene Pitney cover, then decided to rev things back up with Chuck Berry’s ‘Nadine’, to end the event on more of an exclamation point, to a mostly older but all very appreciative crowd.

Rick Shefchik continues his area book tour for Everybody's Heard about the Bird: The True Story of 1960s Rock 'n' Roll in Minnesota, with his next appearance being THIS Saturday in Woodbury, at the Sound+Vision MN Pop Culture Collectibles Show.

Baltimore shoegaze revivalist Wildhoney will be in town on Sunday, November 22nd, at the 7th Street Entry. The five-piece (singer Lauren Shusterich sings, guitarist Joe Trainor and Marybeth Mareski, drummer Zach Inscho, and bassist Alan Everhart) is touring in support of their new EP Your Face Sideways (Topshelf Records).

Noisey described the EP as, "The record qualifies as an EP, and yet it packs such breadth and length it would be obtuse to not consider it a full record in its own right."

Local guests Waveless (who we previously mentioned played with Mount Eerie) and Real Numbers (who previously played with Salad Boys).

Los Angeles' The Lonely Wild (not to be confused with the Young Wild) is back in Minneapolis, supporting their new sophomore album Chasing White Light (eOne Music / Fast Plastic).

Frontman Andrew Carroll talked about the so-called "death album" noting, "This album doesn't dwell on the despair of it all. It's about looking at death for what it is - something we all go through at some point. It's that great mystery and no one really knows what happens. You're never going to know until you get there. And you have to come to terms with that. Through writing these songs I've come to accept it and not totally fear it. And I hope our fans can too."

Touring with The Lonely Wild is Young Buffalo, who we previously mentioned the band as from being from Mississippi. The five-piece rock band (singer/guitarist Jim Barrett, guitarist Ben Yarbrough, keyboardist Will Eubanks, bassist Andrew Guinn, and drummer Timothy Burkhead) has a new album called House, an 11-track album produced by Dave Schiffman (Haim, Weezer).

People are saying that Big Wild is going to become the breakout act in the electronic music scene for 2015/ 2016. Already this year Big Wild has toured with many artists including Gramatik and has remixed everyone including Sylvan Esso, Griz and Bro Safari.

Big Wild will be on tour with Odesza, along with Hayden James (who previously opened for Odesza last Rocktober), and will be performing at First Avenue both Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday, November 24th in the main room.

Odesza is an electronic duo from Seattle featuring Harrison Mills (CatacombKid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches). These guys have only release two studio albums and one re-issue since their conception in 2012 but they have completely taken the electronic world by storm.

Both Monday and Tuesday's shows are already sold out.
