Burger Record's most successful band together PANGEA and Polyvinyl's White Reaper tour just stop by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night.

Frankie Teardrop

The Sunday show started with local group Frankie Teardrop. I have heard of these over and over again but have never gotten a chance to see them. That changed last night and now I have a new favorite local band. They were fun to watch and enjoyable to listen to. They had a very raw, garage band sound that the crowd went wild over.

The four members genuinely looked like they were having fun on stage. Bands that look bored on stage are an automatic turnoff for me. I don't care if there are ten kids or one thousands kids at your show. I want to see people enjoying themselves. Not people that make it look like playing a show is a chore or that look like they would rather be anywhere else other than on the stage.

All of the bands did a great job of entertaining the full house last night. There was so much energy coming from the stage and it really reflected in the crowd. There was no moshing, no hitting, no punching or kicking. There was just a lot of jumping up and down in unison with the members of all of the bands. It's been a while since I have seen a whole crowd jumping at the same time. Sometimes I like to go down in the thick of the crowd and just stand while everyone else jumps around me. It gives you a complete sense of freedom and makes my adrenaline go sky high. Eventually, if you stand there long enough, you can't help but to be caught up in it all and start jumping yourself.

White Reaper

I couldn't help but be completely captivated by keyboardist of White Reaper. I don't think there was a second where this guy was standing still. He was all over the stage and it was honestly hard to keep track of him because I wanted to watch everything else going on at the same time. He seemed to be a bit of a goofball and would play the keys with his teeth and lick the bass guitar in between songs. It sounds dumb but it really did add to the fun factor of this show. Like I said, if the band looks like they are having fun, the crowd is more apt to have fun.

White Reaper recently released a music video for their song "Pills." This song comes off of their debut full length recording entitled White Reaper Does It Again, which was released in July of this year on Polyvinyl Records. They played almost all of the songs off this album. Each song was as catchy as the last. They were fast and upbeat and had you wanting to jump up and down with the rest of the crowd.

Headliner together PANGEA had the same feeling as the other two bands. It was just fun music and people that seemed like they were having the time of their lives. The songs were short and fast. They weren't performed perfectly, but they were performed with heart and that's what counts and what I enjoy. There were jokes being exchanged on stage that made the separation between band and crowd almost non-existent. Even though we were at the 7th Street Entry, it felt like we were just at a house show hanging out with some friends, having some drinks, and listening to some music.

Together PANGEA is on the road promoting their newest EP entitled The Phage EP which was produced by Tommy Stinson of the Replacements and released on Burger Records in October of this year. Not only did they play selections off this EP, they threw in some old songs off their two full length releases dating back to 2010/2011.

All of the bands looked like they were having a great time. The crowd had an amazing time as well. Although it wasn't sold out, there was certainly a good chunk of people at the show. Everyone had a smile on their face and everyone was watching and dancing along to the bands... the way a show should be.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is a musical on the life of songwriter Carole King, based on the biography written by Douglas McGrath. The musical has a residency at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis until the end of November.

The play starred Abby Mueller (her sister, Jessie Mueller, who also starred as Carole King in the Broadway Musical, won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role) as King, Liam Tobin as Gerry Goffin, Becky Gulsvig as Cynthia Weil, and Ben Fankhauser as Barry Mann. Since they had to also represent various bands and characters, this play had some of the largest cast I've seen in a production (over 24 actors)... plus the center piece piano that is always in a scene.

Carole King, she is one of the most successful songwriters in the world, having written, or co-written over 100 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.... although pre-1971, you'd never knew her name as her songs were recorded by other artists, such as Bobby Vee, The Shirelles, The Drifters, etc. Fans of late 50s and 60s bands will be delighted to see them brought to life on the stage, complete with wonderful choreographed dancing and matching outfits.

The musical only cover her story from her first sold song at 16 to the launch of her debut solo album Tapestry (which sold over 10 million copies, winning four Grammys, including Album of the Year).

In the first act, it focused on the two songwriting duos: King/Goffin and Weil/Mann. Although the two were rivals, they were also close friends. Not only did the play represent King/Goffin's songs, but also some of the Weil/Mann hit songs.

In the second act, the focus seemed to be on Gerry Goffin, who was disillusioned and unhappy that he married so young (he was 20 when he married King, after she became pregnant at 17). He was having affairs, and King eventually left him. Although it felt like it was all leading up to her solo Tapestry album, near the end, it felt rushed.

The show ended with King playing her concert at Carnegie Hall. It wrapped up nice, as Goffin returned to apologize for being such a jerk and called back to when they first met and he said if she wanted to play Carnegie Hall she had to learn Bach. They ended the play with King, at Carnegie, playing to "Beautiful".

The play is officially over, and the entire cast came on stage for introduction and a final bow. Although the song listing did not include "I Feel The Earth Move", that was actually the final song.

To make for an entertaining story, some of the facts were switched around or even omitted. For example, officially, King's first commissioned single was "The Right Girl", but for the musical, they used "It Might as Well Rain Until September", or her first album was Writer, but the play largely ignored the debut album. If the play's purpose is to lead up to Tapestry, obviously her most successful release, then it made a lot of sense to leave out some of the irrelevant events or characters.

If you're a fan of live musical, you definitely will want to attend a show. It is a lot of fun, and the musical numbers will bring back a lot of wonderful memories.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will continue to the Oriental Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, from December 1st to February 21st.

Seattle's Beat Connection is back on tour in support of their new album Product 3 (out now on ANTI- Records). We first caught the band in 2012 and was blown away at their fanbase. Their last appearance in Minneapolis was with Django Django in August 2015.

Awolnation (stylized as AWOLNATION) will be stopping by the Myth in Maplewood this Sunday, December 6th, in support of Run (Red Bull). Before the electronic rock band head out with Fall Out Boy, they're set to do a number of Radio Station tour - including this one, as part of 93X Nutcracker Presents show.

Our favorite The Struts will open up the show. You may remember that they previously booked (and sold out) the 7th Street Entry, prompting the promoters to upgrade their venue to First Avenue.

Here is the wrap-up for last month: October 2015.

It's official, this is the most shows we've ever covered for the month of October, aka Rocktober. We typically only cover about 35 to 40 shows, but this year, we broke the record with 62 shows.

Awards:

Busiest Day goes to October 28th for four shows: Leon Bridges at First Ave , Nathaniel Rateliff at Turf Club , Shannon And The Clams at 7th Street, and Mal Blum at Nether Bar . Technically October 14 also featured four shows, but one of the show was The Struts in Los Angeles...

Unique Award goes to FFS at First Avenue (9 Oct 2015). Look, we have previously covered Sparks and Franz Ferdinand, but having the two band teamed up as its own entity is pretty unique. The collaboration was a success, but I have a feeling that we probably won't see FFS again... at least any time soon.

Most Entertaining Show goes to Peaches at First Ave (10/15). For just a one-woman show, Peaches is just a delight to watch. Sure, her shows are NSFW, but that's why we love her.

Most Diverse Booking goes to The Varsity Theater for booking these shows in a row: Singer/songwriter Rachael Yamagata on 10/17, hard rock The Darkness on 10/18, goth rock IAMX on 10/19, and Americana The Lone Bellow on 10/20.

Reunion Award goes to Blur at Hollywood Bowl (10/20) & Madison Square Garden (10/23). Blur, with all the original band members, will probably never play the USA again, and that motivated some diehard fans to fly into Los Angeles and New York to see them for, perhaps, the final time.

Legendary Award goes Ringo Starr at State Theatre (10/16), Slash at Mill City Nights (10/07) and Madonna at Xcel Energy (10/08).

These artists need no introduction, but perhaps I should explain why these shows are so important. There's also no denying that as one of two living Beatles member, Ringo Starr is just a legend. Same goes for Slash, formerly of Guns N Roses... and most importantly, Madonna is back on tour and it is perhaps her last tour before retirement. People often ask if she's relevant at a time when the music industry is packed with younger girls like Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Lorde, and many others. Of course, the Material Girl shows us how it's done.

Odesza (often stylized as ODESZA) pulled off with very few bands can do. They sold out two nights in a row at First Avenue. Not only did they sell out the two shows in Minneapolis, they sold out almost all, if not all, of their almost two month long tour.

ODESZA released In Return on Counter Records back in September. They have quickly become one of the biggest bands in the electronic music world and for good reason. This Seattle based group has been in the scene since 2012 but the shows this week were part of their biggest undertaking to date. They had three sold out shows at Terminal 5 in New York City, three sold out shows at The Shrine in Los Angeles, two sold out shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco but sold out shows in pretty much every other state.

There's a reason why these guys sold out so many shows. They have a clean and catchy sound and a high energy live show. From the second the duo took their spots behind the various keyboards, cymbals, and drum machines, the crowd went insane. The light show was spot on and made watching the crowd but exhausting and exciting. The duo was frequently joined on stage by a pair of horn players but other than that, Harrison Mills (CatacombKid) and Clayton Knight (BeachesBeaches) commanded the crowd to move the entire night. The crowd didn't need any reminder to move, there was not a single person in the sold out crowd standing still.

Hayden James took the stage right before ODESZA. James is a musician from Sydney, Australia who definitely turned some heads during his set. Although he only has one EP and a couple of singles out, he is definitely getting some attention in the electronic world. Being on this tour will only help him catapult to the same kind of fame that his tour mates have. He played a few songs off of his EP along with a few unreleased tracks.

Big Wild

Opening the show was Big Wild from Los Angeles. Big Wild is Jackson and was definitely a jaw dropper as an opening act for an already amazing line up. What sets Big Wild apart from the other acts of the night was the versatility Jackson exhibited. He played a lot on the keyboards as the other acts did but also did a lot of his own whistling and playing on a boom box drum (the drum that you sit on and are able to make different noises on depending on where and how hard you hit it). He kept the crowd engaged but in a much different way than the other groups of the night. Whereas the crowd was rambunctious and feisty during Hayden James' and ODESZA's set, the crowd just stood there and watched while Big Wild blew their minds.

Keep Shelly In Athens is back in Minneapolis this December 1st, supporting their second album Now I'm Ready (Friends of Friends). We previously caught the Greek band in October 2013 with Chad Valley, and described them as sounding like Portishead, but minus the trip-hop.

Since we last saw the band, Sarah P. stepped down as singer, and producer RΠЯ announced in 2014 that Myrtha will be taking her place. Their upcoming appearance will feature the new singer.

Chicago's one-man-band/DJ Different Sleep to open. Different Sleep recently remixed Keep Shelly in Athen's "Benighted".

Japanese noise fans, be sure to catch experimental tribal noise collective OOIOO next Thursday at the Walker Art Center. As you know, we are big fans of Boredoms, and co-founder and drummer Yoshimi P-We is band leader for OOIOO.

We have been following Boredoms and other Japanese bands and we can confirm that it's very rare to see Japanese bands on U.S. soil... so you'll want to be there next Thursday at the William and Nadine McGuire Theater.

Show up early to catch a special set by Minnesota-based Javanese musician Joko Sutrisno and his Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble.

Catch a rare US appearance by the enigmatic Japanese avant-tribal-noise-pop collective OOIOO (oh-oh-eye-oh-oh). Under the intrepid leadership of Yoshimi P-We (cofounder of Japanese band Boredoms and the inspiration behind the Flaming Lips’s album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots) the group has subverted expectations and warped perceptions of what constitutes pop and experimental music since the mid-1990s. Simply put, “It’s rugged, inspired, original music” (New York Times). OOIOO perform their Minnesota debut on Thursday, December 3, 8 pm in the William and Nadine McGuire Theater.

Between The Buried and Me is extreme. They are not the heaviest band of all time. They aren't the most technical band of all time. But they are one of the few bands that is able to find a balance between extremely heavy, very technical and, nothing short of, beautiful music all encompassed into one song. Take that one song times nine (they only played nine songs but their songs are super long and complex) and you have an amazing night of music.

The crowd wasn't as excited as they should have been. There should have been people all over the place, crowd surfing, moshing, and getting rowdy. There was a little pit that broke out but nothing too extraordinary. Honestly, it was a Monday night in Dinkytown with a Monday night crowd. I don't know what I was expecting, but I think I was expecting more excitement.

Maybe the issue was that the tour package was a bit too bi-polar. Now, don't get me wrong. I absolutely love bi-polar tours. I love having pop-punk and hardcore bands on the same bill. Those are the shows I live for. That being said, there are certain genres that do not mix. Last night would be an example of two genres that simply do not mesh.

Enslaved

Enslaved is a progressive death/black metal band from Norway. They are definitely talented, don't get me wrong, but they are not my cup of tea and definitely not what majority of the crowd wanted to hear last night. Which, again, is a shame because they definitely aren't the worst band ever and hell, they came all the way from Norway but regardless, they didn't fit the bill and really did bring down the mood.

Majority of the crowd seemed uninterested and just stood there. Yeah, there were some fans that had their devil horns up and were hollering in between songs, but they were in the minority. The room seemed much emptier during Enslaved's set compared to when BTBAM took the stage but such is life. BTBAM just has much more of a following than Enslaved and the bands didn't mesh. BTBAM won.

Not only did they win by the size of the crowd, Between the Buried & Me won with the amount of energy and talent. From the second they took the stage, I was completely blown away. Yeah, I had heard of these guys before and knew what they were about but I never really got big into them. I couldn't tell you names of songs or even albums. I could tell you, however, that these guys are super talented and their music really keeps you on your toes.

I didn't know many people at the show last night so I stood against the wall towards the front and just took it all in. It's amazing to be at a show that, although you don't know much of the music, can make you drift off to another world. It's not that I was daydreaming, more just that I lost touch with how my day had gone.

I did not know about Mitski when I saw her co-headline with Elvis Depressedly ... Palehound Opener, Palehound, a project by singer, guitarist and songwriter Ellen Kempner from Boston, MA, compliments Mitski’s raw and evocative style with her own, haunting confessionals. ...

Mitski, Palehound and PWR BTTM made their debut at First Ave’s side room, 7th Street Entry, on November 19th. With it, they brought a night of catharsis to the lonely, heart-broken and disillusioned young adults of Minneapolis.

PWR BTTM were a lot more pop than I expected them to be. For some reason because of their name I expected them to be a raucous and angsty punker band. Well, maybe they are a bit angsty, but they totally fit the bill’s sentimental energy. They employ some fun and adorable sounding power pop to tell their stories of loneliness and alienation. I think the climax of the set was their song “Serving Goffman,” off of the new Ugly Cherries. It really encapsulates their story and sound in just over two minutes.

Palehound

Palehound seemed to have as many fans at the show as Mitski. Not only because they are Pitchfork darlings. Delivering a somber, yet engaged set to an attentive audience,  it’s clear that Ellen Kempner really cares about her story and craft. Her soundscape could be considered standard indie rock if it wasn’t for the evocative,  sincere lyrics and almost new wave guitar noodling that she weaves in. Live she adds a bit of fury to the songs with some strong well placed shrieks. Her band is also very tight, and I enjoyed the tone and trot that the bassist brought. I’m definitely interested in what else Ellen decides to create as Palehound.

Mitski’s touring band this time around had the standard power trio set-up; Guitar, drums and bass. And with that, she was able to deliver fully fleshed renditions of her Bury Me at Makeout Creek. I will admit that I was a bit disappointed that her set wasn’t quite as visceral as her opening set for Elvis Depressedly in Denver, CO. I think part of that might be because she had to fill in the guitar or bass for her missing band member at that show. Yet, it also left me pretty impressed on what kind of last minutes stops she can pull to put on a good show. She’s definitely got a knack for showmanship as her gloomy thematic album suggests, but I’ve now seen it confirmed repeatedly. She’s also very good at bringing an intimate set to another level with her musings and perceptions on her everyday and her personal accounts of people at their worst. Like I said before, Mitski is not just a musical project, it’s an identity. Pop gem craftsman,  heart on sleeve feminist, with knack in finding the light in the dark, she’ll continue to captivate release after release.

The together PANGEA and White Reaper tour is coming to town this Sunday, November 29th, at the 7th Street Entry.

After opening up for reformed legendary Minneapolis band The Replacements at the Hollywood Palladium, together PANGEA went on a very successful UK tour. They've returned to the US with this upcoming headlining Fall 2015, in support of The Phage EP. There's no argument that together PANGEA is one of the most successful Burger Records bands.

White Reaper recently shared their music video for "Make Me Wanna Die", starring a Grim Reaper (aka White Reaper) quitting his day job. Watch it on youtube.com.

So so-called "The So Cute! Tour", featuring Slow Magic and Giraffage as co-headliners, will be stopping by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis this Sunday, November 29th.

Like Daft Punk, Slow Magic hide his face behind a changing light fox mask. He impressed us with his previous appearances with Gold Panda and Hot Chip.

As for Giraffage, the San Francisco kid has become one of the fast rising DJ/producers on the scene, working on the soundtrack for the recent iPhone 6 commercial with Fool's Gold release "Be With You". Recently Carly Rae Jepsen approved his remix of her song "I Really Like You".

The two recently collaborated their song "So Cute!", which you can grab for free at toneden.io.

Special guest Lindsay Lowend to open. Not sure if I like the trend in band naming themselves after celebrities, such as Hoodie Allen, Gnarls Barkley, Joanna Gruesome, Gringo Star/Ringo Deathstarr, and recently, Flint Eastwood.

Born Ruffians will be in Minneapolis on November 30th, in support of their new album Ruff. They recently released their single and video for "(Eat Sh**) We Did It". Guitarist and vocalist Luke Lalonde explains, “The song is very reactionary to something kind of sh**** happening and the feeling of getting over it. It doesn't have to be triumph, sometimes you just want to celebrate your ability to continue on in the face of any adversity. I think telling people to "eat sh**" is a really obnoxious thing. It's something you feel more than you actually say out loud. The song was always meant to be a bit funny. I think the video reflects the weird and funny nature of the song.”

Joining them will be Canada's Young Rival. The indie-rock trio (Aron D’Alesio, John Smith, and Noah Fralick) is currently on tour for their third album Interior Light (Paper Bag Records). They describe the new album as “a new start: a springboard for further experimentation and exploration.”

The Dandy Warhols just played the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Saturday night.

The Shivas

Portland's The Shivas opened up the show, playing some psychedelic melodic surf rock like "So Far Out Of Control" and "Waste Your Time".

Some of my favorite songs were sung by the girl drummer of the group, including a Shangri-La-esque track "Gun In My Pocket" (revisited version), taken from their forthcoming Better Off Dead (set for release in February 2016 via K Records).

Although last Saturday was the band's final stop with the Dandys, the band will continue to South Dakota, Utah, Colorado and ending their tour in Boise, Idaho at Neurolux on November 25th.

Courtney Taylor-Taylor

This was one of the most memorable The Dandy Warhols shows we've seen in a while, thanks to the fact that twenty years (and four days) ago, the Dandy Warhols' very first Minneapolis show took place at the same venue (16 November 1995). It was the band's very first national concert with Electrafixion (you may have remember that it featured Echo & the Bunnymen members Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant).

As explained on stage by singer/guitarist/songwriter Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the band's van broke on that fateful night in November 1995 in Minneapolis. Since they had some downtime, the band called around and booked a last-minute house party that well spectacularly well. Since then, the band had a torrid love affair with Minneapolis. It inspired Taylor-Taylor to write "Minnesoter", which they will always perform the song whenever they are in town.

Setlist

Instead of following their setlist, Taylor-Taylor decided to just play "Minnesoter" on the third song. After a quick guitar tune-up, the band was good to go... and that just show you how talented these guys are at improvising.

In typical Dandy Warhols live shows, they have a tendency to build up and stretch out songs... and sometime, especially because they started later than scheduled, they will drop songs off their set list. On Saturday's show, the band did not play their popular Veronica Mars song ("We Used To Be Friends").

They also have their famous "Zia McCabe Potty Break" section, where Taylor-Taylor will play a few songs by himself. I think Taylor-Taylor wanted to play a Kirsten Hersh (from Throwing Muses) song, but settled for his traditional "Welcome to the Monkey House" and "Every Day Should Be a Holiday" so that everyone can sing along.

Of course, almost everyone there at the show was there for their most popular song "Bohemian Like You". Once the chorus comes around, everyone in the audience sang back "whoo" and "whoo hooo".

The song finale was "Pete International Airport" and "Boys Better" medley together. The band left the stage to drone-like noises, leaving only keyboardist Zia McCabe to play some funky techno DJ music.

Before closing out the show, Zia said, "Thank you for 20 years of coming out to see us and supporting us. Since this is the last night of the first leg of the tour, I'll sing you a song." With that, in acapella mode, Zia sang a traditional campfire song, "There's a Daisy On My Toe".

It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years for The Dandy Warhols. Look, Dandys rule, OK?
