The HardDrive Live Fallout Tour, featuring co-headliners We Came As Romans and All That Remains, recently played the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on Friday (October 30th).

Red Sun Rising

Red Sun Rising from Akron, Ohio, was one of the band who opened up the show ... touring in support of their debut album Polyester Zeal (Razor & Tie). These guys have been around since 2007 but haven't really gotten the attention they deserve. That is all about to change. They blew me away last night. Mike Protich, singer, has a voice like I have never heard before. He is fronting a metal band but has a voice that would turn all the chairs on The Voice. That's something that you don't get all the time. There's nothing wrong with a metal singer that can't sing, that's part of the charm for me. But when you have a singer that is nailing every note and actually has feeling in his voice, that's something special and that's exactly what this band has.

Unfortunately, Red Sun Rising only had about a twenty minute set but they fit as much as they could into those twenty minutes. The crowd seemed to be conserving their energy for the rest of the night but that didn't stop the five-piece from giving the short set their all. Unfortunately, Red Sun Rising didn't seem to fit the more metalcore bill of the night. Their sound seemed to be a bit too radio rock for the crowd. Last night was Red Sun Rising's last night on this tour and they will soon embark on a tour with Godsmack. I think they will fit on that bill way better and hopefully they will finally get the recognition they deserve.

We Came As Romans

We Came As Romans stole the show last night, playing tracks from their latest self-titled album (Equal Vision Records). They had an intense light show that pretty much blinded you at times along with great music. I have seen these guys a couple of times and they keep getting more and more polished with each performance I see. "Tear It Down" is a song that the unclean singer, Dave Stephens, said was written just so they could see the whole crowd jump up and down in unison. That's exactly what the crowd did.

The crowd never slowed down for WCAR's set and neither did the band members. The amount of energy these guys have is immeasurable. Throughout the hour long set, WCAR had the crowd enthralled in their live show. You didn't have to know their lyrics to feel like you were a part of this band. That is why I feel like these guys stole the show. It didn't matter who you were there to see last night, you stopped what you were doing, stopped the conversation you were in the middle of, put your phones away the second these guys started.

All That Remains were the headliners of the night, currently touring in support of their latest studio album, The Order Of Things (also available on Razor & Tie). This is their seventh studio album, and highly anticipated, as the record landed #25 on Billboard Top 200 with over 19,000 units sold in its first week at retail.

The Massachusetts band, featuring singer Phil Labonte, guitarist Oli Herbert, rhythm guitarist Mike Martin, bassist Jeanne Sagan, and drummer Jason Costa, played some hits, including their first hit single "This Calling".

Dave Rawlings Machine just headlined the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul on Thursday, October 29, 2015.

This is just a quick post to get some basic information, tour dates, photos, and setlist online, as soon as possible.

With no opening musical act, the band took advantage of this by playing a double set consisting of tracks from their two albums (A Friend of a Friend and Nashville Obsolete). Filling out the rest of their set were plenty of cover songs - particularly near their end of their set and double encores.

Dave Rawlings Machine

Both Dave Rawlings, and his longtime musical partner Gillian Welch, have worked with everyone in the industry from Tom Petty to Ryan Adams to Old Crow Medicine Show to Bright Eyes.... the latter they covered "Method Acting" and dedicated to singer Conor Oberst for a speedy recovery (he was recently hospitalized and was forced to cancel his remaining tour).

Dave Rawlings Machine's set changes from night to night, making it a challenge to predict what songs they will play. The band seems to go wherever the road leads them (the theme of their recent song and video for "The Weekend"). In fact, just a minute before the show, they had no idea they were going to open with a cover of Woody Guthrie's "Goin' Down The Road".

Typical of Americana/Bluegrass/Mountain Folk shows, the band cycled through fiddles, banjos, mandolins (strangely the musical saw was missing). The fans were very respectful and restrained, except for certain cover songs (such as Bill Monroe's "He Will Set Your Fields on Fire") which inspired foot-stopping and loud cheers and claps.

The New Love Tour, featuring headliner Allison Weiss, just came through town last Wednesday, October 28th, at the Nether Bar (inside Mill City Nights).

Unfortunately, due to conflicting concert schedules (it's Rocktober!), we were unable to provide coverage for Weiss.

Kid In The Attic

However, we are happy to report of the three openers, starting with Kid In The Attic (aka Maia Macdonald). Fans who showed up early were respectful and saw down in front, leaving a good view for people in the back.

KITA played a few tracks from their latest Qué Lástima, which came out earlier this Summer via Rhyme and Reason Records. She ended her set with what I thought I heard as "Minefield Daughter".

Winter

Up next was Los Angeles-based Winter (not to be confused with UK's Winter or UK brother/duo Winter). The misfortunate thing about this band is their name, which is a common word and is confusing with various existing Winter bands (also the Winterlings, Winter Braves, Winter Sounds, Jacky Winter, Wintersleep, etc.)

This dream pop/shoegaze group is led by singer/guitarist Samira Winter, along with guitarist Matt Hogan, bassist David Yorr, and drummer Garren Orr.

The first thing Winter did was encouraged everyone at the show to stand up. Their 30-min set featured songs about relationship, addiction (to love), drugs, tattoos, "typical" teenagers, and, of course, the California sun (which was missing on this slushy snow night).

The band is really young, and I got the feeling that the band just graduated from high school. Their song, which they wrote as "High" on their setlist, was all about being an outcast (and trying to blend in) in high school.

Setlist

The last band we saw was Mal Blum, from New York City. The trio (featuring singer/guitarist Mal Blum, bassist Audrey and drummer Steph Barker) actually wrote more songs on their setlist than time allowed to play (especially because all the bands started a little late). With five albums to choose from, you can see why they had a problem choosing songs. They only chose a few from their latest You Look A Lot Like Me (Don Giovanni Records), with the obvious two singles "Better Go" and "Robert Frost".

The band was having a lot of fun goofing off on stage... even though Mal Blum's music is pretty depressing. They had some issues, with Mal Blum constantly complaining about being shocked by her microphone. Headliner Allison Weiss even tried to give some advice with no luck. Eventually, Mal switched mics with Audrey, to no results. In the end, I think someone needs to give Mal Blum a pair of good anti-static shoes for Christmas.

Once again, apology to Allison Weiss. You can read about her last appearance in Minneapolis in 2013, which Emily wrote, "Allison Weiss was very engaging throughout her set, asking the audience, “Does anyone in here like to feel?” and making humorous comments about the television show “The OC” and the mocking glare of the venue’s glowing restroom sign. Weiss played a collection of earnest pop originals before dropping a pretty great cover of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.”"

Shannon and the Clams recently headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Wednesday, October 28th.

Shopping

One of the opener was London's Shopping. Their music did not mesh well with Shannon & the Clams' beachy music. Shopping was more dance art, post-punk, as described by all the popular critics (Pitchfork, Stereogum, etc.) Shopping is currently touring in support of their sophomore album Why Choose, available now on FatCat Records.

Despite only a brief 30-min set, the trio (guitarist Rachel Aggs, bassist Billy Easter, and drummer Andrew Milk) played nine punk/rhythm songs (excluding the intro "Blah Blah Blah" soundcheck song!), included their new single "Straight Lines", as well as "For Your Money" from their debut album Consumer Complaints.

With over 26 songs written in 2015, expect Shopping to be around for the future. My only complaint, and it is a valid one, is that their name is just too common and confusing.

We've seen Shannon and the Clams with Hunx and His Punx in 2013, and I noted that one couple drive all the way from Wisconsin to see the opener (a clear sign that they have a good dedicated fanbase). The number of fans have grown, nearly selling out the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday night.

The trio (Shannon, Cody, and Nate) came on stage a little after 11pm with Cody wearing what looked like a gold cape. He actually had a little trouble putting it on the right way, so their set was a little delayed.

Most of their set included brand new songs from their latest Gone By The Dawn (Hardly Art Records), including "The Bog" and "It's Too Late",

The Shannon and the Clams/Shopping tour will split up November 1st when Shopping head out to San Francisco.

Sydney's Little May stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Tuesday, October 27th, on their "For the Company" US album tour.

Marah in the Mainsail

Opening up the show was local band Marah in the Mainsail, who only found out they were opening the show just two days prior. We previously seen the band live at their release party for Devil Weeds & Dour Deeds in 2013.

They sang songs inspired by the Haunted Mansion ("The Graveyard Song"), which is fitting for Halloween.

Highlight of their set was a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang (my Baby Shot Me Down)", but done as a slow, sad song.

Hannah Field

On their first US tour (and first Minneapolis show), Little May (Annie Hamilton, Liz Drummond and Hannah Field) is joined by their friend Mark on bass/keys. As expected with a debut tour and album, they basically played their entire For the Company album (available now on Dew Process)... and as a bonus threw in a cover of Icehouse's "Great Southern Land", which they had to learn how to play when Australia's national radio Triple J asked them to play a cover for their live session series.

For the song "Hide", they described the song as "loud, jarring, and repetitive", based on their neighbor's complaints when they were rehearsing the song.

The less-jarring song, "The Shine Is Brighter at Night", Little May said that they had to drive to Hudson to meet with Aaron Dessner (from The National), so he can produce and record their album. They were having trouble finding their sound for that song, until Dessner pull it out of them. The song, as they described it, is "sad and hopeful."

At the end of their set, they stepped off the stage and fans stuck around, expecting an encore. Despite the hooting and the clapping for more songs, no encores were given.

Los Angeles-based duo The Bird and the Bee will be stopping by Minneapolis' Cedar Cultural Center on Monday.... although I was recently told that multi-instrumentalist Greg Kurstin will not be joining the band on this date.

Still, after a five-year hiatus/gap, it will be nice to see the band again in any form - even sans-Kurstin.

The Bird and the Bee will be promoting their fourth album Recreational Love, available on Rostrum Records.

Regarding the long gap in album, singer Inara George said, “We didn’t mean to take so long but life ended up getting in the way, in a great way.”

George also sings in the indie-folk supergroup the Living Sisters and Kurstin is really busy as a Grammy Award-nominated producer (working with Sia, Ellie Goulding, Pink and Beck, etc.)

Alex Lilly to open (we previously mentioned that she is also in the band... as well as Obi Best).

Local DJ Jake Rudh will likely be playing some 80s music videos.

How has it already been ten years?! I remember listening to Juturna by Circa Survive in my little blue Kia Rio... my first car. Well, it has been ten years and Circa Survive is celebrating by going out on a tour and re-releasing this quintessential album as a deluxe version in vinyl, CD and digital formats.

Anthony Green, singer, has an unmistakable voice which made Circa Survive become one of the "must listen to" bands for any teenager in the early 2000's. This band features members of Saosin, This Day Forward, and Taken and have a very angsty rock feel.

Circa Survive will be playing at Mill City Nights on November 2nd with RX Bandits and Citizen. I saw RX Bandits a couple of years ago at Station Four in Saint Paul but haven't heard much of them since. I am super excited for this show! Make sure to get your tickets in advance! This is sure to be a busy show!

You know we love The Strokes. When we caught guitarist/singer Albert Hammond Jr. live last year, we realized that his solo music sounded just like The Strokes. If you love the Strokes, you will love Hammond Jr.

We previously caught Shinedown (with co-headliner Three Days Grace) at Target Center in 2013 and noted that frontman Brent Smith "knew how to work the crowd."

They have a big fanbase in Minneapolis, and had the audience eating right out of their hands.

Opening up for Shinedown will be Wilson, who was just in town in September with Trivium. Expect the band to do a similar "party music" set on this tour.

The show is sold out.

We've seen former Men at Work singer Colin Hay a few times, including a recent appearance at Treasure Island Casino. Hay is really fun to see live, thanks to his stories from his incredible music career. And YES he has no issue playing Men at Work songs, which we love.

New York's Here We Go Magic is back with a fourth album called Be Small (available now via Secretly Canadian). For a time, we thought the band broke up, especial with lead singer Luke Temple releasing and touring under his solo material... but with the new tour, it would seem HWGM going strong on their sixth year as a band.

The last time we saw Temple, he opened up for Blonde Redhead at the Varsity in November 2014. The last time we saw HWGM as a full band was at CMJ 2013.

Special guests Big Thief and The Counterfactuals to open the 7th Street Entry show.

Family Force 5 is doing the "Winter Jam" tour, and has added a few dates around the Winter Jam shows... including a date at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis. The last time we heard from this band was when they officially signed with Word Entertainment last year.

Opening up will be Born Cages, who we previously caught in New York on January 2014. The band is currently on tour with FF5 for their latest album I’m Glad I’m Not Me (Washington Square/Razor & Tie).

It's hard to believe that we've been writing about him since 2013....

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats killed it last night at the Turf Club in St Paul.

If you haven't heard of Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, you are missing out. Nathaniel Rateliff is a soul, bluegrass, gospel (hell, can you even categorize him?) singer from Colorado (although he was born in Missouri, he still considered Colorado his home.) His band, the Night Sweats, is just as amazing as he is though they seem to be a bit over powered by Rateliff's amazing voice.

Rateliff has been around for a while now. As we have previously mentioned, when Rateliff is playing solo, he's considerably a passive, sensitive, acoustic folk singer/songwriter... but as Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, it is a different story. With the Night Sweats, Rateliff is transformed into a high energy soul/R&B upbeat band.

Rateliff has played the Twin Cities on multiple occasions and it has always been to a small and humble crowd... until last night. Rateliff has taken the indie scene by storm with his single "S.O.B (Son of a B****)". Last night was a sold out show at The Turf Club and Rateliff more than proved that he was worthy of the crowd and definitely not going anywhere anytime soon.

Land Lines

Denver-based Land Lines opened up the show, in support of their sophomore LP The Natural World (Misra Record and Greater Than Collective), which came out in August. As expected, the trio (Martina Grbac, Ross Harada and James Han) played their latest single "Plans", taken from the new album.

Land Lines has previously shared stages with DeVotchKa, Esme Patterson and Black Heart Procession.... and now fellow Denver band Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats.

Although he may seem like a one hit wonder to those who just hear his hit in passing on the radio, his latest recording Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats is full of soulful songs that keep you wanting more. They played just about every song off of this album, including a new one that has not been recording yet entitled "Parlour". Each song was just as good as the last and each song had you moving around whether you had heard the song before or not. In the case of this crowd, it's safe to say that majority of them were there only to hear the one song they knew from the radio, "S.O.B." (myself included) but that didn't stop them from moving around.

Setlist

Although the set was short, 13 songs total, it hit you like a roundhouse kick to the face. There were fast songs, slow songs, fun songs, deep songs.. it didn't matter what type of song it was, it was powerful and full of feeling. It was hard to take your eyes off of Rateliff as he sang with such conviction.

Rateliff didn't talk much other than to thank the crowd but that kind of adds to his whole persona. He was personable but without saying much. He wasn't afraid to dance around a bit and I spotted him doing the weird leg dance thing that Dave Matthew does when he plays live. You know what I'm talking about.. it's kind of like a shuffle that you would do if you really had to pee but it's amusing and cute and it fit with the music. He stomped around, he played the tambourine like it was no one's business, he was doing anything except for standing still like I had half expected him to.

As soon as he started singing his radio hit, "S.O.B.", the crowd went wild. You can't listen to this song and not sing along. It's catchy, it's poppy, it makes you feel good. It's the kind of song where you would pay at $15 cover and put up with driving in the first snowfall of the season just to hear that one song live. Seeing and hearing that song live was exactly what I had wanted out of it. It sounded perfect with all of the band members singing. There was so much clapping and dancing coming from the crowd that it felt like one big hoedown. There was not a frown in the crowd, strangers were turning into dancing buddies and everybody was having a great time. After a terrible couple days at work, hearing and seeing that live was exactly what I needed.

Last night, Rateliff proved that he is more than his one radio single. I've known that for a while, but after last night, I think many other people realized that.

Leon Bridges with opener Kali Uchis just played a sold-out show in the Mainroom at First Avenue in Minneapolis last night.

This is just a quick post to get some basic information, tour dates, photos, and setlist online, as soon as possible.

Kali Uchis

Columbian born Kali Uchis literally shone during her brief thirty minute opening set.  Dressed in a short turquoise wave-patterned dress, with white boots on and sunglasses perched on her head and singing into a floral vine mic stand, Uchis looked the ray of summer sunshine as the wind, sleet, and cold swirled outside.

Supporting her 2015 EP, Por Vida, the singer and four-piece band were thrilled to be on the road, committing themselves fully to the music, with all just quitting their day jobs (hers was at Whole Foods).

In addition to her own songs like 'Rush' and the set closing 'Loner', she also found time to work in covers of Smokey Robinson's 'Being with You' and Bob Marley's 'Waiting in Vain'.

Like Amy Winehouse, her influences are far-reaching - soul, pop, reggae, r & b, and more, which makes her music hard to pin down, but is commanding of your attention-- one to watch in the future.

Leon Bridges takes a bow

Leon Bridges is also just growing as an artist and performer, becoming less shy and more confident on stage, than when he played SXSW this March, and opened locally for Lord Huron this April.

The 26 year-old has a hit album, Coming Home (Columbia Records) and entered the stage amidst shrieks and screams, in a dark suit and white buttoned up shirt, with his six-piece band in tow, including White Denim guitarist Austin Jenkins, who helped launch his big industry break.

The elegant stage had rows of ruffled burgundy curtains as its backdrop and a series of seven back spotlights hung in a triangular pattern on lighted poles.  Most songs were culled from the debut release, though a few new ones were peppered into the 70 min. set as well.

'Smooth Sailin' featured some noteworthy sax and drum solos, 'Twistin' & Groovin' was inspired by his grandparents meeting in New Orleans, and 'Lisa Sawyer' was written for and about his mother (though her favorite song is 'Coming Home', he confessed).

A friend asked him to write a song about his dog, 'Daisy Mae' and while he kept the title, wisely changed the subject matter.  Main set closer 'River' was gospel flavored and emotional, with only Bridges, his keyboardist, and background singer Brittni Jessie on stage.

The two song encore started with the spry 'Pussy Footin' and ended with 'Mississippi Kisses', two songs about love gone in a different direction.  Mixing the best of the old (Sam Cooke-era type songs and vocals) with a modern spin on things, Bridges is just getting started.
