Experimental rock group Battles will be at First Avenue this October 3rd. The current lineup feature guitarist/ keyboardist Ian Williams, guitarist/ bassist Dave Konopka (formerly of Lynx), and drummer John Stanier (formerly of Helmet).

Battles' latest release La Di Da Di recently came out on Warp Records.

All of the bands, including headliner Reflections, Toothgrinder, Yüth Forever, Exalt, Soulkeeper, etc., that played last night at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St Paul, were on point. There was not a single band that I didn't enjoy.

The worst thing about being an adult and wanting to go to a bunch of all ages shows? You usually miss the first band or few because the show starts way earlier than when you get off work. Last night I only caught two songs of the first band, Aurae, and it was the first time in a while that I was truly disappointed that I didn't get to the show right on time.

This was the third time I had seen these guys play. It has only been a couple of months since the last time I saw them but they completely blew me away last night. I support the local scene no matter what, but it is rare that a local band that I'm not friends with has me this hooked. The kids in this band look young enough to be my own children but the amount of talent they have is far more than some of the kids I went to college with who studied music full time.

Maybe it's their professionalism that has me in love. Their set got cut way short last night. Like short enough that they barely had time to tell the crowd who they were. They didn't complain. They didn't take to Facebook and rant about it. They got off the stage and thanked people for their time. That sounds little and insignificant but I can't tell you how many bands I've seen that have their sets cut short and act like little babies about it. Keep your eyes on this band. Seriously, there are big things to come for this band.

By The Thousands was the main reason I went to the show last night. They are amazing musicians and continue to gain the popularity in the scene that they deserve. I remember being one of the only people at some of their first shows. Last night, they had a bigger crowd than majority of the other opening bands and out of majority of the local bands here in the Twin Cities, they are more than worthy of this.

Their music is perfection. It's technical and precise but not overwhelming. When a sample doesn't play on time, they don't stop the song to fix it, they wait it out like true professionals, never missing a beat. It's heavy with bass drops and breakdowns that take your breath away. It's the fact that the second they start playing, you can't help but move a little bit. Each song was heavy and perfect. I have seen these guys countless times now but last night was, by far, the best. It's been amazing to see them grow as a band and I am more than honored to call these boys my friends.

I saw Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men in 2012 at the tiny Fine Line Music Café. It's 2015, and the band will be playing Roy Wilkins Auditorium, which is a million times larger than the Fine Line.

OMAM is currently touring in support of their sophomore album Beneath The Skin (which came out earlier this Summer on Republic Records).

Supporting OMAM on this current tour will be Norway's Highasakite. You may recall that we caught the band over at SXSW 2014.

With their sophomore album Silent Treatment spending 81 weeks in the Norwegian Top 40 charts and earning them Norwegian Grammys (Best Pop Album, Best Composition), two GAFFA awards (Norway’s biggest music magazine) and a nomination for the IMPALA awards’ “Best Independent European Album Of The Year,” it's easy to see why this cinematic pop band will be welcomed by OMAM's fans.

Panic is Perfect to open the show. Panic is Perfect is an acoustic duo, Mike Hoffman and Jeremy Belzer, from San Francisco... we previously mentioned that they were in town with The Hunts in June 2015. We were glad to have shown up early to catch American Scarecrows' full set at Communion (Oct 2014). As described in the review, they had very strong local support from fans, friends and family. Expect the same dedicated fanbase at this upcoming show.

Similarly we caught Trapper Schoepp randomly at with Old 97s in 2013, which Emily described as "probably my favorite live acts this year."

Blues/Jazz singer Lizz Wright recently made a rare double appearance at the Dakota Jazz Club on September 22 and 23rd, touring in promotion of her latest album Freedom & Surrender. Her last Dakota appearance was on February 23, 2011.

The house's introduction to Wright was pretty great, describing her voice as smoky and truly unique. Her voice carried the concert, but in typical jazz shows, the music also played a huge part, often improvising and extending the music beyond its original frame. In fact, the band had a full five minutes to warm up the stage for Wright to appear on stage.

The guitar and bass solos, which were done midway and near the end of her set, served as a nice intermission to let Wright take a break from lead vocals.

Of course, the majority of the set consisted of songs from her new album Freedom & Surrender, which critics have noticed was less jazz and more blues and R&B. Wright jokingly said that was because she paused too much during her songs.

Wright was also very particular about how the music sound, and always a perfectionist when it came to her voice. At the start of "Real Life Painting", there was a low sound that she was hearing that was throwing her off. She stopped the song and after a brief fix, they restarted the song.

Setlist

Filling out the rest of their set were a couple of cover songs, including Neil Young's "Old Man", Nick Drake's "River Man" and Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (made popular by Roberta Flack). The latter song, Wright noted that it will appear as a bonus song on Freedom & Surrender, but she loved it so much that she said she'll make sure it will be available on her next wide release.

For the encore, Wright started with a traditional song "Amazing Grace", medley into "Song for Mia", before ending the whole thing with the title track from her debut album: "Salt".

Co-headliners Stray From The Path and Comeback Kid are currently on their Subliminal Criminals Tour, stopping by the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on Wednesday, September 23rd.

When I'm super excited for a show it's because of one or two bands. I go to the show anxious for those bands and kind of let the rest fall to the wayside. Last night was no different. I had my whole night planned out. I knew when I'd get a drink, what merch I wanted to get, what bands I could stand outside for, what bands I wanted to be in front for, etc. I usually know what band I'm going to write about for this blog before I even get to the show. Last night my whole plan went to crap in the best possible way.

Last night was a show that I was legitimately excited for. It wasn't just another show that I went to because I had nothing better to do. I didn't get in for free because of my blog. I paid for a ticket that I got from a local band opening the show and rushed there right after work. My friend ended up ditching the show so I went alone, I didn't care. I was not missing it.

Comeback Kid

Don't get me wrong, I was excited for all of the bands playing but I was super stoked for Comeback Kid. My plan was to just going chill in back and take notes on the other bands before their set, get up close and nice and sweaty while they played, grab a t-shirt from them and then just wait patiently for the show to get over while taking more notes. (Yes, I take notes during shows for the blog so I don't forget the little things.) This strategy has worked for basically every show I've been to... until last night.

It worked great for the first couple of bands. The music was great but the crowd was pretty tame. I was able to hover near the stage and just take in the music (which was a nice change after getting my butt kicked Tuesday night at the D.R.I. show) and take my notes. I went downstairs for some fresh air and came back up to a whole different atmosphere. The calmness was somehow gone and had been replaced with some sort of tenseness. There were kids stretching, taking earrings out (when you have larger gauges, it's normal to take them out when you're about to go into a mosh pit of any sort) and getting ready for something. I had no clue what said something was, but it was about to go down.

Being As An Ocean

Being As An Ocean is a prime example of why I will go to ANY, and I mean any, show. I had heard of them before. I've listened to their music in passing. I never fell in love with it. I fell head over heels in love with them last night. It was one of those sets that gave me the goosebumps and that feeling that I crave. The goosebumps that creep up your arms the second the first note is played and that feeling rushes over you like a tidal wave.

The singer, Joel Quartuccio, was only on stage for maybe a song. The rest of the time he was down in the crowd with his microphone. Talk about a sense of family. When a singer gets on your level, when they throw the microphone in the crowd and keep on singing without it... that's what gives me the goosebumps that I long for. I didn't know any of the words. I couldn't chant along with the rest of the crowd that was going nuts. That didn't matter. It didn't matter that I hadn't listened to these guys much. I felt like I was a part of this... hell, I was a part of that.

Major League Deez Nuts

The show was amazing from beginning to end. It was amazing being able to see Comeback Kid yet again and finally see Stray From The Path. I could go on and on about how great the music was. I could talk for days about the sense of family you can get from a show like this. I could ramble on about how awesome Deez Nuts was or how I really liked that Major League was on this tour. I could write about this show for days but honestly, if you weren't there, you won't get it.

I've missed out on seeing D.R.I. a couple of times now. I've always wanted to go but something else always seems to come up. I finally got to see these guys on Tuesday, September 22nd at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis.... and now I'm regretting ever missing one of their shows.

D.R.I., standing for Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, is a legendary punk band from Texas. They have been around for-freaking-ever (their first release was in 1983... before I was even a thought). That being said, this was obviously not their first tour. They've done this for 20+ years and for all 20+ years, they have been killing it.

Let's first talk about the fact that Kurt Brecht, the singer of D.R.I is still working the merch table. I don't mean that he hangs out around the merch table before and after the show because, let's be honest, everyone does that to "get to know" their fans. No, Kurt IS the merch guy. A friend that went to the show with me wanted to get some merch so he skipped out on the last two songs only to find out he was unable to buy anything until Kurt was back there because he was in charge of all things credit cards. This sounds small and insignificant but as a kid growing up and listening to bands like D.R.I, this is everything. It breaks down all barriers between rockstar and fan. It's the reason I love what I do and keep on going to all of these shows.

Last Tuesday was the first night of a two week tour with no breaks. These guys are 50+ and playing 14 days of straight shows. Younger bands can barely handle a four day grind, let alone a 14 day grind. It's not just that it's a 14 day grind, that would be relatively easy if you are playing slow and calming acoustic music. These guys aren't. These guys are going balls to the wall punk and never slowing down once during their hour and fifteen minute set. It made me tired just thinking about it. Hell, I'm exhausted after three days of straight shows (two more to go on this bender) and I'm not even playing.

The crowd was insane from the beginning of In Defence's set all the way to the bitter end of D.R.I.'s set. There was some sort of thing resembling a circle pit at all times. There were people falling, people flying, people just going crazy. I assumed my usually position on the outskirts of the pit with my arms crossed and just took it all in. I am not typically one to shy away from a pit, but last night was a bit too intense for me. People were still helping out people who had fallen down (you're family in a pit no matter what genre) but the rate of people falling down on the hard concrete floor was immeasurable. It wasn't that people were being too rough, it was more the spilled beer on the ground and just the amount of bodies going every which direction at all times. It was a recipe for disaster.

Out of all of the shows I have been to since I've started this blog, this show had the most injuries. It also had some of the nicest and most protective people at it. There were people walking past me with their noses covered up with their hands but you could still see the blood streaming down their arms. People would fall on the ground and just lay there until they were plucked up by someone who was dancing past them. It would take these people a minute or two to figure out what was going on but before you knew it, you lost them in the pit again. Dumb? Maybe. I'm sure going back into a pit after getting a concussion is not the smartest idea but that's what everyone did last night and to be honest... I have done this plenty of times. Hey, they say falling asleep after getting a concussion is bad, being in a pit like this, there's no way you're falling asleep.

The music sounded just the way I wanted it to. The songs were fast and dirty. They made you feel something, I don't know what I felt, but I definitely felt something. It sounded like the CDs I grew up obsessing over only with more energy. There were really no "face melting" solos but you don't need that at a show like this. It doesn't fit. What does fit are one to two minute long songs with simple lyrics that you can relate to or that bring you back to your childhood. One to two minutes of pain or anticipation of pain (depending if you're in the pit or on surrounding the pit) followed by a quick break so you can catch your breath. That's exactly what we got during all of D.R.I's set.

In Defence

Now that I've talked your ear off about D.R.I., let me at least touch on In Defence, one of the opening bands.

I have seen these guys multiple times now. They are from the Twin Cities but have been touring recently and it seems that they haven't really been playing out as much as they used to. Good god did they nail last night's show. They fit the line-up perfectly, they were full of energy like always and they were entertaining. In Defence has songs about everything from pizza to tacos to star wars to dungeons and dragons to a refrigerator that eats people. I know that makes them sound like a joke, but they aren't. They are all great musicians and truly are talented. Having funny songs just makes me smile and love them that much more.

The other great part of In Defence? I saw Ben Crew, the singer, in the pit during D.R.I's set more than once. (I think I saw the other guys too but Ben was directly in my line of vision) This is one of the main reasons the Twin Cities music scene is so great. People supporting people. Local bands supporting local bands. Touring bands supporting local bands. Touring bands supporting touring bands. It's cliche and I mention this in almost every blog but, the music scene here is a family. One big happy, sweaty, clusterfuck of a family.

I can be very biased when it comes to seeing bands live. All bias aside, D.R.I. is a legendary band with a great live show. If you ever get a chance to go see them live, take it. I know I say it all the time, but I mean it this time... You will not regret it!

French-Cuban duo Ibeyi (twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz) recently stopped by Mill City Nights in Minneapolis, their second appearance in the Twin Cities this year.

Opening up the show was London's Vicktor Taiwò. He's accompanied by guitarist Ryan, who provided all the music and loops during Taiwò's 30-minute set.

Based on the darkened lighting (mostly in near-darkness) and his deep personal lyrics, I got the impression that Taiwò was really shy about bearing his soul for us on Tuesday. Most of his set was taken from his Juno EP, including the first two, "Paradise Island" and "Curse". This was followed by a new song and then "Digital Kids", a song featuring Solomon on the studio recording.

Since we had just seen Ibeyi earlier six months ago, at the Cedar... their set remained relatively unchanged. There's really only so much music you can arrange if you only have one album. Comparing their setlist from March and now, I can see that they've added a few more songs (including a bonus song "Chains") on their new set, so they can fill an hour.

Also, a brand new song was played for us, they called it "Fly", which they played right before their Jay Electronica cover song "Better In Tune With The Infinite".

If you've seen the earlier show, this is basically the same show, complete with the explanation of the daughter of thunder ("Shango"), the daughter of the sea ("Yemaya"), and of course actually repeating their most popular song "River" at the encore. They didn't finish the song, instead, leaving it up to the audience to sing back the chorus.

The biggest surprise of the night really had nothing to do with the music, but instead was about who was in attendance. They had sectioned off the entire balcony for his royal purpleness Prince, along with three women friends and two bodyguards. The group showed up around 10:30pm and remained at a table watching the entire show. Prince is a big fan, having tweeted out "Twin Sisters/Twin Cities : Welcome Ibeyi !!!" just prior to their show.

Ibeyi's self-titled debut album is out now on XL Recording.

Back in 2010, Chris Stamey, best known as the co-founder of 80s indie-pop band the dBs, had the idea to put together a collection of his favorite musicians and perform Big Star’s Third (also known as Third/Sister Lovers). Stamey had successfully done a similar thing with an Elliott Smith tribute a few years prior and decided to tackle the influential band’s classic, brutal third studio album. As Stamey explains on the Big Star Third website: “It struck me at the time that this was “concert music of a generation,” that regardless of who performed it, it should be heard out in the air, not confined to earbuds, cars, and living rooms. In the same way that Mozart and Beethoven, in their day, were heard.” And thus, Third, found new life in the instruments and voices of such talents as Mike Mills from REM, Mitch Easter of Let’s Active, Ken Stringfellow of the Posies (and the 90s incarnation of Big Star), Stamey himself and surviving Big Star member, Jody Stephens, as well as Charles Cleaver, Audley Freed (Sheryl Crow and Black Crowes), Brett Harris, and Skylar Gudasz.

All these years later, Minneapolis is finally being treated to this once-in-a-lifetime event: a performance of the album with a chamber orchestra.

As a fan of every single musician involved in this project and a dedicated listener of Big Star (and the creative musical minds therein), I am beyond thrilled for this show. Third has so many incredible moments on it: the emotional devastation of “Holocaust,” the reverb-wrapped “Kangaroo,” the transcendent love ode “For You,” the joyful bombastic “You Can’t Have Me,” the shimmering melancholia of “Nighttime.”

Big Star tapped into something special, something very human, a beauty that has resonated with people for over four decades. It’s hard for me to overstate just how important this band and their music is. I can already predict that this September 30th performance will be an evening no one will forget.

We love Ash. We've been following the Irish band for a long time now, and a few years ago, they famously said they would "never" release an album. Instead the trio concentrated on just recording singles (ultimately those singles were collected into their A-Z compilation).

Anyway, as we have previously mentioned, the band backpedaled a little, announced that they have recorded an album called KABLAMMO!... and they are heading out on tour in support of the new record. The world tour will take them first to the USA and then all over Europe, and ending with a five dates for Ireland.

Although they will be previewing new songs from KABLAMMO!, they'll also be playing the hits ("Kung Fu", "Girl From Mars", "Goldfinger", etc.) as we have previously mentioned from their 2013 Varsity Theater show.

Tremonti is named after frontman Mark Tremonti, best known as the guitarist of the American rock band Creed. Co-headliner Trivium is a metal band from Florida with six studio albums and countless tours under their belt. They will be releasing Silence In the Snow on October 2nd through Roadrunner Records.

Opener Wilson is a hard hitting rock band from Detroit, MI. They recently released Right To Rise on Razor & Tie Records. Metal Injection declares Wilson, “sounds like He Is Legend and Andrew W.K. got together and wrote a hooky, riff-stuffed party anthem that demands to be blasted.” After listening to a couple songs online, I can hear it and am now super excited to see what these guys do in a live concert setting.

Legendary shoegazing band Ride will be headlining Mill City Nights next Tuesday, September 29th. After the British band broke up in 1996, founding band member Andy Bell went on to play bass for Oasis. Of course, Oasis broke up and Bell moved to Beady Eye (basically Oasis without Noel Gallagher), but we ultimately know what happened to Beady Eye....

So this is really the perfect time for Ride to reunite! Fans who never caught the band in the 90s will finally get a chance to hear Ride live next Tuesday.

We caught Stereolab's Lætitia Sadier on tour in 2012 at the defunct 400 Bar. Recently, we were lucky enough to have caught her with Helado Nego in March 2015... but she didn't do any of her songs.

That's about to change, as Sadier will be headlining Icehouse next Tuesday with Deradoorian.

We've seen Angel Deradoorian a few times now. She recently released her solo debut album The Expanding Flower Planet on Anticon Records. As we previously mentioned, the former former bassist and vocalist for Dirty Projectors has been compared to Björk.

Seattle's Noah Gundersen is currently on tour in support of his sophomore album Carry The Ghost, stopping by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Monday, September 21st.

Ivan & Aloysha

Ivan & Aloysha was the opening act of the night. They have a great indie folk-rock sound with yet another very powerful vocalist. These guys gained a lot of popularity when NPR named them one of the top 100 bands at SXSW back in 2010. It seems like they have only grown since then. There was a group of kids next to me that were clapping along to every single song. I&A kept the audience engaged the whole time. Their songs were upbeat but not fast and out control.

As you can see from their setlist, despite having the majority of their songs from the new 2015 album It's All Just Pretend (Dualtone Music), the clapping group definitely knew, and sang along, to all the songs.

While much of their 45-min set went without a hitch, shortly after "Modern Man", singer Tim Wilson accidentally dropped his inside his acoustic guitar... which made for an awkward moment as he tried to fish it out.

Noah Gundersen was the headliner of the night. There was no shortage of people at The Fine Line to see him perform.

Noah's songs have been featured in shows such as Sons of Anarchy and The Vampire Diaries. His voice is smooth and powerful. During his song Ledges there was a quick a capella part that really showcased just how powerful his voice is. It was the kind of moment in a song that gives you goosebumps.

Noah was accompanied on stage by a band that seemed to be playing musical chairs with their instruments. The drummer and Noah were the only ones that really stayed in the same place with the same instrument. For one song his sister (who was featured on violin majority of the night) ended up on a keyboard. I would look down at my phone, then look up, and all of a sudden she had a guitar in hand. That just goes to show how truly talented these musicians are. And they would have to be super talented in order to keep up with Noah's incredible voice.

His whole set was like a rollercoaster. He would play a very slow and quiet song and have me to the point of nodding off with his soothing voice. Then the next second, the drummer is banging on the drums about as loud as any other rock band. Noah's voice was able to keep up regardless of the style of song and that kept me, a person who can't stand watching acoustic/ singer-songwriter stuff live, interested and wanting more.

Favorite comedy moment of the show was before the band played "Empty From The Start", Gundersen poked fun at the balcony people for paying more for their tickets, "You balcony people looking down on us and throwing your dollar bills... just kidding. Thanks for paying extra." However, as soon as he acknowledged the "lower level people", there was a loud cheer.
