The Screaming Females and Vacation tour just came through Minneapolis on Saturday, August 1st, at the Triple Rock Social Club.
In typical 'triple rock' shows, first of the three bands was local We/Ours (which sounds like "wee hours"), who played songs from their recently released album Pretty Out There. Near the end of their 30-min set, singer Will mentioned that they had "four tapes for sale," which the drummer Justin had to clarify that "we have four left."
Ohio's Vacation was up next. Right off the bat, singer Jerri mentioned it was Marissa Paternoster's birthday, before launching into "Back to the Land". That song is exclusively available on limited tour cassettes.
Vacation was very good, playing punk music with attitude, but none of the sloppiness that plagues typical punk bands. If anything, Vacation definitely had the coolest looking clear guitar.
Since the last time we saw Screaming Females at Triple Rock Social Club
in 2014, I noted that singer/guitarist Marissa had a belt strap to hold her guitar (unlike traditional over-the-shoulder straps). I have yet to have see other musicians wear their guitars this way, so I'm almost convinced that this was custom-made for Marissa.
Marissa rarely spoke between her songs, instead, letting her guitar do the speaking. It is always fun to watch her play on the floor, against the amps, back to the audience, etc.
She ended her 40-minute set with a new song called "Triumph", which she said was from their latest album Rose Mountain, which came out earlier this year.
For the encore song, "Bell" was broken into two distinct parts: the first as a long, long instrumental and the second part had plenty of screaming... living up to the band's name. That wasn't the highlight of the show. As soon as she ended the song and was ready to head over to the merch table, the audience started singing "Happy Birthday To You" to a very humble and thankful Marissa.
