I previously wrote that King Gizzard had "one of the most ridiculous band names", and I still stand behind that.

We originally didn't see Minneapolis on the D'Angelo "The Second Coming Tour" 2015 US summer dates... but it would seem he finally added us because he was in the area (Chicago) for North Coast Music Festival. Of course, the First Avenue show is sold out. It should be noted that First Avenue is the only non-Festival date, so it should be a very special show.

If you haven't been keeping up, earlier this year, we wrote that Grammy Award winning and multi-platinum selling singer released Black Messiah (#1 on iTunes in 29 countries). This was a great comeback, having been away from the music industry for nearly 15 years.

Also in the news, D'Angelo's debut solo album Brown Sugar and sophomore Voodoo have been re-mastered and re-issued for the first time on 180g vinyl last Friday, August 21st.

D'Angelo and his band The Vanguard continues on their "The Second Coming Tour".

Having previously teamed up on tour, Tim Heidecker and Neil Hamburger are back at it again, stopping by a sold out comedy show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night.

In typical Neil Hamburger style, the drunken, badly done hair comb over, safety pinned suit, Hamburger came on stage gripping three drinks, wheezing and coughing. Stunned at the adoring standing ovation, Hamburger jokingly said he might as well leave now... but then continued telling his "gags". We've seen Neil Hamburger before and we know his materials aren't that funny, but it's more about his delivery and awkwardness that makes it so laughable. Moving away from jokes about his ex-wife, the America's $1 Funnyman mostly made fun of "Leeeegendary" famous musicians Grateful Deads, Blind Melon, Gene Simmons (Kiss), Paul McCartney (Beatles), and Ozzy Osbourne.

Anyway, when not talking about these singers (and their crap), Hamburger's material incorporated bad "Knock Knock" jokes and an incredible joke told in French/American. His French pronunciations and dictations were impeccable.

His fast food jokes including the only thing worth saving at a Taco Bell and bringing your grandparents to Hardee's. The latter, Hamburger wasn't exactly sure if Minneapolis was a Hardee's town (in the West Coast, where Hamburger is from, it's all about the Carl's Jr). Sadly, no jokes about 7-Eleven, but then someone reminded me that no one would find that funny because Minneapolis doesn't have 7-Elevens.

Coming on the stage to Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al", Tim Heidecker knocked over the mic stand and fumbled for the microphone on stage. When the music didn't stop, Heidecker said, "Cut the music!" But the song continued, forcing Heidecker to re-do his entrance. It's all part of the joke, including the badly adjusting and readjusting of the microphone stand, but it was fun to watch him act it out.

I didn't think this was part of the show, but sometime I think Heidecker was a little nervous performing to a completely full seated audience... especially early on in his routine about "Comedy Without a Net". Shortly after telling us about how he was going to improvised... he resorted to using his "net" of handwritten notes.

The first part of his show is truly unique to our show, he's written a few Minneapolis-specific jokes, including buying "mini-sodas" and "mini-apples". The Minneapolis music jokes of Hüsker Don't and the original Replacements got a big laugh. Of course, when the obvious choice of Prince came up, he said there was just too much respect there to joke about.

Speaking of music, he actually had a whole segment on "Women in Music" (Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Madonna) and a bit on Keith Urban and The Zombies (the band).

The other thing was Heidecker must be used to random drunk hecklers at his show that he actually has a safe word ("Root Beer") to have security kick out the offending audience member. It wasn't acting, both Hamburger and Heidecker were visibly aggressive, not happy to hear hecklers hijacking their show. Another comedian once put it into perspective, it's like if the comedian showed up at the heckler's job and started yelling and distracting them at his desk. It's just not cool.

During Heidecker's joke about his wife's consulting interior house decorating website, he asked if anyone in the audience owned a house. When one guy (also named Tim) said he recently bought a house, Heidecker questioned him and his date (Carly) about the house. It turned out that Tim and Carly were Canadian and they lived in a house, but not married. Heidecker demanded that the two get married or "get out of my country!"

Tim got down on his knee with Heidecker's wedding band and proposed marriage. It was all in good fun, no one expect them to go through with it, of course.

The best part of Heidecker show was the encore. He came back on stage and decided to play some The Yellow River Boys tunes on the house piano. If you didn't know, in 2013, Heidecker and his band The Yellow River Boys released an all-urination album called Urinal St. Station (yes, a whole 10-track album about pee). The two songs he played were "Hot Piss" and "Slurp It Up".

With the great Minneapolis jokes and The Yellow River Boys songs, this felt like a truly unique and special show... especially for Canadian Tim, Carly and their faux marriage.

We're pretty excited to have UK's Wolf Alice back in the Twin Cities. We previously caught the band at the Turf Club in May 2015 and noted that "Based on the excited fans and sold out status of the Turf Club, the band will definitely be returning to Minneapolis... except, of course, they'll play a much bigger venue."

As predicted, the band will be playing the much bigger First Avenue mainroom (with new roof!) in our Rocktber month (October 5th). Their entire UK tour is sold out - so I suspect First Avenue will also sell out. Buy your tickets now or you'll regret it later.

Wolf Alice are: Ellie Rowsell, Joff Oddie, Theo Ellis, Joel Amey.

Joining them, will be Drenge, who we saw at the 7th Street Entry in August 2014.... and also, once again, Made Violent, will be joining Wolf Alice again. I actually really love Made Violent, but have mentioned that the Wolf Alice audience was not for them. We'll see if they'll come around this October 5th.

Canada's Wolf Saga (also known as Johnny Saga) will be celebrating his new EP Auburn Nights at Bardot in Hollywood, California, on Monday, September 14 as part of "It's a School Night" shows. According to The Western Gazette, Saga has a style reminiscent of Vampire Weekend and The Strokes, with "charming vocals over a catchy electronic beat."

They referenced the Strokes because Wolf Saga actually covered their song "You Only Live Once", which made it on one of 2014's best of tracks on Hype Machine's Zeitgeist, placing at #1 twice on the Most Popular chart.

Joining Wolf Saga on stage will be Lilianna Wilde (vocals) and Brittany Maccarello (drums).

New Orleans indie-punks Donovan Wolfington just released their sophomore LP How to Treat the Ones You Love via Topshelf Records today, August 21st, 2015.

Regarding the album's lead track "Ollie North", singer/guitarist Neil Berthier said of the recording process, "I think we all lost something in one way or another, some more than others... There was a lot of distracting pain involved in making it."

I said that they seem more comfortable as headliner band... and voila, the porn to be mild blues rock band will be closing out the free show at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall tonight.

Portland's Summer Cannibals recently stopped by the 7th Street Entry on Wednesday, August 19th, in support of their latest album Show Us Your Mind.

Hollow Boys

Locals Catbath and Hollow Boys opened up the show, both with brief 25-minute sets. We previously seen the former with Polyphonic Spree in 2014, while the latter sounded a bit shoegazey. Hollow Boys' set: "Wrong", "Someday", "Spellfreaker", "Melted", and "Savepoint."

Shadow in the Cracks

Closing out the show was headliner Shadow in the Cracks, featuring brothers Jim and Mike Blaha of The Blind Shake. The singer had to sit down during his set because he needed his foot for the bass drum. They were guitar-driven, sometime with distorted vocals and sang depressing songs like "Lonely, Lonely, Lonely Time".

Summer Cannibals

We previously caught the punk/garage Summer Cannibals opening up for Chvrches last year. They're back in Minneapolis for their latest album Show Us Your Mind. Right away, I really like their energy, and I feel singer Jessica Boudreaux sounded like some of my favorite 90s bands riot acts, like The Smears, L7, or even Babes in Toyland. I actually knew a few people that had never heard of Summer Cannibals, but took a chance on the show last night, and instantly became fans.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, only a few songs near the beginning were actual titles from Show Us Your Mind. The rest were either not recorded yet, or were cryptic names for other titles.

The oddest moment was when Marc Swart said something how it was nice to be back in Minnesota and how he saw a loon. Boudreaux clarified, "Like the animal?!? He's lying, we've been inside all day." Maybe she should have dedicated their song "Full Of It" to Swart.

Midway into their 30-min set, they mentioned how beautiful it was here, and a fan suggested they move to Minneapolis. When the band said, it was too cold... of course, no one disagreed.

October 7th - Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular (NY Comic Con)
For the first time in the US, the Doctor will land at his adopted home city of New York, with performances at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY during New York Comic Con. The night showcases the music of Gold, who has been the composer for the series since its re-launch in 2005, and will feature well over 100 musicians, singers, and monsters live on stage. Michelle Gomez (Missy, the latest incarnation of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis the Master) will host the performance.

Norwegian singer Jenny Hval will be back in town at the 7th Street Entry on September 1st, in support of her new album Apocalypse, girl. We previously saw Hval at the Turf Club in April 2014, and mentioned that despite the snow in Minnesota in April, Hval was not impressed: "We have snow where we're from... I'm very disappointed." Fingers crossed that there won't be snow on September 1st.

One of the hardest touring band The Delta Saints just stopped in Minneapolis at the 7th Street Entry last night, August 17th.

Loons in the Attic

Opening up the show was Loons in the Attic with a bluesy rock 30-minute set consisting of a few tracks from their self-titled EP (Feb 2015), including "Fireball", "Uptown Too" and set closer "Struck Dumb".

Porno Wolves

Next was Porno Wolves (not to be confused with Rhode Island's Wolf Porn) who could probably play well over their 50-minute-ish set of rock jams and weeping guitars. This made me think that they are used to headlining or just not used to opening with short sets.

Highlight of their set was when guitarist Steven Schwartz pulled out the alto saxophone for "Light" and singer Ryan Bachman commenting that "It's about to get real dirty."

With over 200 shows a year, you can tell right away that The Delta Saints was no stranger to setting up their gear and stage in an impressive under 10 minutes. The Nashville band previously appeared in Minneapolis with Blackberry Smoke at the Varsity Theater in February 2014, so they're well aware of Minnesota's harsh winters... and was smart enough to book a headlining show in August.

Right away, a fan told me the story of the Delta Saints. Originally the bayou rock band never intended to release a proper album, but after years of touring, their fans demanded they record an album. They said, sure put your money where your mouth is... and their fans were more than happy to fund the Kickstarter for their debut album Death Letter Jubilee.

Of course, the new tour is for their latest album Bones, and as you can see from their setlist, the first part of their set was Bones-heavy. The album just came out earlier in August, so you can tell fans weren't familiar with the newer material. When the title track "Death Letter Jubilee" was performed, that got the biggest feedback from the crowd.

On the second part of their set, singer Ben Ringel finally started introducing some of the newer songs. For "Soft Spoken", Ringel jokingly said it was how his girlfriend's father sounded when he met Ringel.

Ringel also noted that following the love song "My Love", was the anti-love song Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain."

After an extended drum solo and guitar jam, the band ended their set with "Cigarette"... and quickly disappear for a few minutes before coming back for the inevitable encore for "The Devil's Creek."

The Delta Saints' latest Bones is out now.

Rachel Platten just appeared Out of The Blue—

In addition to her sudden fame with worldwide hit, ‘Fight Song’, singer-songwriter Platten is in full-tilt promotion mode for her upcoming full-length album, due later this fall.

On Sunday, she sang in gold sneakers at the Teen Choice Awards at the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, and Tuesday morning, she’s in New York to perform on the Today Show, so what to do in-between? Why, make a stop in Minneapolis and perform to a packed rotunda at the Mall of America, as part of Pepsi’s Out of the Blue summer concert series.

Some of the faithful had been waiting over eight hours for her, with wristbands for her post-concert meet-and-greet, quickly snapped up before midday.  The 34 year-old is riding high on her anthem song, which has gone platinum domestically and hit #1 on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, and has inspired young and old, and those overcoming all kinds of obstacles, with her empowering lyrics.

The Fight Song EP is her first for major label Columbia Records and Platten was quick to enter and leave for her brief five-song, 20 minute mini-concert.  ‘Beating Me Up’ from the EP was up first, about a failed relationship, though not from lack of trying.  “This is incredible!” Platten gleaned after, surveying the filled floor and railings filled with people on the other four levels.

‘Lone Ranger’ followed, a song about her “gypsy traveling” and independence as an artist, also mentioning that she had previously been to the mall as a shopper and was excited to be now actually performing there.

Platten, accompanied by keyboardist Dallin Applebaum and drummer Craig Meyer, then went into a new song, ‘You Don’t Know My Heart’, another anthemic song of love-lost and self-worth.

Another new song, ‘Stand by You’ was described by Platten as “one her favorites” of the new tunes she’s currently recording, a number that builds and could easily be done backed by a full choir.

“You are awesome, thank you very, very much for all of the love today”, Platten exclaimed, before going into her biggest song.  “If you have a dream, please believe in yourself” she told the audience before the biggest cheers of the day went up.

“I still have a little fight left in me”, ‘Fight Song’ ends – and based on the rabid reception at the Mall of America today, Rachel Platten may have seemingly come from out of the blue, but you’ll be hearing her name for some time to come.

The album is out today …

This time they really mean it – “All Bad Things Must Come to an End”

When Mötley Crüe and Alice Cooper came through last November as part of the Crüe’s Final Tour, many thought it was the last local farewell, with people paying in the thousands on the secondary market, for prime seats to their heroes’ last ride into the sunset.

But, time and the allure of additional money earned, was too hard to pass up, so the band has made another leg around the country, stopping again at major markets and hitting secondary cities as well, so that as many as possible can get their last glimpse before it all winds up in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve.

The Cringe

New York City-based band, The Cringe opened the evening’s festivities with a set of straight-ahead classic rock, wearing their influences on their sleeve.  The band, led by guitarist/vocalist John Cusimano (who happens to be married to chef Rachael Ray) has completed their fifth album, Blind Spot  (Listen Records) for an October 16 release and opened with new song, ‘Anything You Say’.

Black Sabbath’s ‘Paranoid’ was tacked on the end of the band’s own, ‘In God We Trust’ and Thin Lizzy’s ‘Jailbreak’ finished their 30 min. set, with Cusimano leaving the stage for a run through the floor to high-five fans along the way.

Alice Cooper

A classic Vincent Price introduction led to the curtain fall and a canvas backdrop of a close-up of Alice Cooper’s eyes as the shock rocker and band launched into the opening ‘Black Widow’ of its too-short 50 minute set.  Alice, at a spry 67 years young (thanks to sobering up and a regular golf game), brought most of his theatrics to the set, including a giant walking Frankenstein; top hat, tails, and cane to throw out funny money and necklaces; and the classic guillotine (but where was the snake?).

The band was generally tight, led by triple guitarists Ryan Roxie, Tommy Henriksen, and Nita Strauss (she recently of Iron Maidens tribute band) with Strauss ably replacing the departed Orianthi, though maybe playing with slightly less flash.

Alice was entertaining as always, and in reasonably good voice, though somewhat on auto-pilot, as he didn’t say much between songs, perhaps eager to get as much music in, as the 50 min. set time allowed.

As a reflection of the audience’s age, later Cooper hits like ‘Poison’ got as much or more applause than some of the ‘70s numbers.

Instead of a full Hollywood Vampires medley from his upcoming covers record, we only got a portion of Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall part 2’, added inside an entertaining ‘School’s Out’, so we’ll take his set as an sampler plate to whet the appetite of everyone to experience a full Alice Cooper show.

Mötley Crüe decided to soften everyone up with a family-friendly ‘Sound of Music’ intro track before things turned dark, a beating heart could be heard, and the band entered to dive in head first into their 105 min. set with the motorcycle intro roars of ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’.

The foursome was all dressed in black- guitarist Mick Mars more mobile and playing stronger than expected, drummer Tommy Lee shirtless and still clearly having fun, and bassist Nikki Sixx in spiked hair and warpaint, singing into a flaming and dangling pentagram mic.

Pyro was plentiful, with explosions happening numerous times during just the opening track and the band continued in high gear with ‘Wild Side’. Singer Vince Neil, while still entertaining, has lost some of the range he had during the band’s glam days, often holding the mic to the crowd, instead of trying to reach some of the high notes he once did (especially on the early songs).

Spoken profanities were as plentiful as the pyro (always expected at a Crüe show), though Sixx, clearly the heart of the band, did make a heartfelt speech mid-way through about the band’s history, using a knife analogy and telling of their perseverance and overcoming all odds.

Momentum slowed midway through as Neil strapped on a guitar for ‘Same Ol’ Situation’ and ‘Don’t Go Away Mad’ and a handful of newer songs that were less familiar to the crowd.  Each musician had their individual time in the spotlight as bassist Sixx strapped on a flame-throwing guitar, Mars laid down a solid solo, and drummer Lee, (always one to top himself with his drum solo) spun and rode a mobile drum kit on a rollercoaster set up near the venue’s ceiling, playing ruthlessly along to classic rock and hip-hop beats while in transit.

After an arena-raising ‘Dr. Feelgood’ and ‘Kickstart my Heart’ (two of Mars’ greatest intro riffs) ended the main set, the band re-emerged on a smaller b-stage, located behind the soundboard, that raised and lowered 25 feet with a dozen diehard fans who paid an additional $745 for the privilege, in tow.

A sing-a-long ‘Home Sweet Home’ was accompanied by the photo retrospective video on the screens and lit cellphones and lighters were in the air everywhere.  The band made their way back to the main stage to take the final bows we would see locally, to the outro tune of Sinatra’s ‘My Way’, which seemed a more than appropriate song to end it all.

After thirty-four years of addictions, internal squabbles, record company woes, scandals, deaths, near-deaths, and so much more, Mötley Crüe has earned the right to go out on their own terms… which is just what they are doing.

Here is the wrap-up for last month: July 2015.

The Minneapolis summer festivals officially kicked off last month with Rock the Garden, and continues into July with the biggest music festival of July: Basilica Block Party and Vans Warped Tour. Personally speaking, this year's Basilica had a killer lineup with headliner Weezer and Nate Ruess (of fun.).

Traditionally, July has always been a slow month for music, speaking from personal experience - shows in July don't have the best attendance. I believe people go on vacation, travelling, living out on their cabins, or don't want to leave their air conditioned home. The shows that do really, really well are early outdoor shows - for example the Cabooze Outdoor Plaza shows (which we only attended the Switchfoot/Needtobreathe show).

Older, established bands who know their market prefer to tour Minneapolis in the Summer were: Toad the Wet Sprocket (who had a side show in Minneapolis from their regular tour with Smash Mouth), Say Anything (who was experimenting with a four-piece orchestra on their set), Indigo Girls (a nice reunion of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers), Veruca Salt (their second appearance in Minneapolis after reuniting with all the original members), Flock Of Seagulls (at the second annual Ribfest in Mystic Lake), and Everclear (with Toadies on their annual 90s revival Summerland Tour).

Other highlight in July: Blur's first show in Australia in 18 years took place July 25th in Sydney. Freezepop making a semi-rare Midwest appearance at the Nether Bar on July 18th.

Also what a great way to end July with soul music at the Secret Stash Revue at First Avenue. The show featured Sonny Knight and the Lakers, Wanda Davis, and others.
