The second annual Ribfest just took place last weekend (July 24-July 26) at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota. For those who attended the Midwest Ribfest, you may remember that it used to take place on a parking lot in downtown Minneapolis ... but after nearly a decade of absence, the free event came back again last year - this time taking place in Shakopee.
There were ten rib vendors, and judging by their setup and numerous six-foot trophies, these vendors are professional traveling cookers. First place winners were awarded $8,000, so there's huge incentives for these vendors to make a living going to different cook-offs.
Rib prices were all the same: three bones for $8 (sometime four for $10), six for $15, and twelve for $25. Bottled BBQ sauces were usually priced from $5 to $8. With drinks (another $8), you're going to drop about $30 if you're going to get a decent meal out of it. It wasn't cheap, but it was sure tasty.
Of course, we got there before English new wave/synthpop band A Flock of Seagulls came on stage. Only one original member (Mike Score) is still in the band, but it was still great to see them on stage. Joining Score was guitarist Joe Rodriguez, bassist Pando, and drummer Michael Brahm.
We've seen various nostalgia acts at W♥M and was expecting them to do their biggest hit so "I Ran (So Far Away)" as the song finale - or at least saving it for the encore... however the band launched into that song! This was followed by their two other biggest hits: "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" and "Space Age Love Song."
At this point, we were wondering what they are going to do after this?
After an hour playing in the hot weather, the band launched into "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)", joking that the first time was only practice... Then "Space Age Love Song" and ending it with "I Ran (So Far Away)", as we originally predicted. This was such an odd choice, to play their three biggest hit songs again in the same set.
On retrospect, repeating their biggest hits made a lot of sense for an outdoor show like this. Casual fans aren't going to stay for the full hour plus set, so getting those songs out of the way would make them happy... Then for the fans that wandered in late, they can also benefit from hearing the hits in the finale.
Looking over their set list, the first three songs were done in favor of dropping out "Messages" and "The Traveller".
We had a good time at Ribfest, despite the heat and lack of shades and if they continue to book good bands next year, we'll make that long drive to Shakopee again... However, maybe we'll just stick to buying the award-winning BBQ sauces and skip out on the expensive ribs.
