Athen, Georgia's Emily Hearn just opened up for Tyrone Wells, on his Roll With It tour, at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night, May 9th. This was Hearn's very first time in Minneapolis.
There were about 200 or more seats in the center at the Cedar, reserved for the "VIP" ticket holders. Most of the seats were filled, which indicate that they sold out on seats.
Joining Emily Hearn on stage is her husband Michael "keyboard slayer" Harrison, who played a number of instruments from keys, shaker, and tambourine. Hearn's 30-minute set had plenty of time for her to tell stories for most of her five-song set... giving us a glimpse into Hearn's often personal songs. For example, "Waking Up Again", taken from her latest album Hourglass, is about the end of Winter - and fitting for Minneapolis.
"Found a Heart" was about finding her soulmate, Harrison. The story, as told on stage, was that they met on a blind date on Valentine's Day 2011. When she found out that he is also a musician, she had him in her band. Harrison chimed in and said that he was basically singing Hearn's songs about her ex-boyfriends... which was "a little weird." Of course, Hearn started writing new, happier songs.
I thought I heard that "The Oak Tree" song started by a melody that Harrison wrote. The song came about from their February tour in Michigan. The two discovered that they were "wusses" when it came to colder climate. Their tiny jackets, their "cute" scarves, and non-snow shoes were just not cutting it in Michigan. Hearing them talk about "scooping" (shoveling) snow, I just got the feeling that they really haven't experience a brutal winter. Even Ben Folds, who had experienced it all, claimed that he will never tour Minneapolis in the winter (it was so cold they just left his piano in the middle of the street).
Emily Hearn's Hourglass is out now. Look for her on the Tyrone Wells' Roll With It tour. Remaining tour dates:
