Since signing up for PlayStation Plus, I've been pretty disappointed by the games offered on PS4. No complaints about the PS3 games (highlight was free Dead Space 3 and Crisis 3)... but PS4, the free games are simply lacking. That's because there really are no decent games on the (new-ish) system, which has been a constant complaint from me from the start. I'm just dying to get any decent games on the PS4.
Anyway, one of the free games this month (November), was the addictive SteamWorld Dig: A Fistful of Dirt, by Image & Form, which I just beat a few days after downloading it.
You play as a robot miner in a three-robot town (which will grow as you level up). Your main mission is to just mine and collect valuable minerals to sell and upgrade your character. It's fairly a simple game and you'll have no problem getting the hang of it.
Here are some tips if you're playing the game for the first time:
Upgrade your torch and pouch right away. The torch goes out fairly quickly. To me, the limited light is the most frustrating thing about the game... to prolong it will let you spend more time in the mine.
Minerals do not respawn... so you'll have to be smart about how you spend your money because the minerals are limited.
Go into all the caves within the mines right away to get new powers... The first few times I played the game, I avoided the caves because I didn't know what were in them.... on retrospect, the caves are very easy and only serves to make your character better.
I have no idea what to do with the Saloon robot floozy... so you probably don't have to talk to her.
As for the music, it was obviously inspired by Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly. I'm actually a big fan of the spaghetti western genre and had a kick out of hearing similar-styled soundtrack.
The company's next game will be called SteamWorld Heist, coming out Spring 2015. According to their FAQ, this is not sequel, but "a sequel to the sequel".
