Dreampop band Blonde Redhead are currently on tour in support of their new album Barragán (Kobalt Music Group), stopping by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last night.
Previously unannounced DJ Jake Rudh, last seen at Slowdive at Fine Line, played tracks like Broadcast's "Come On Let's Go" and Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)", as well as other 90s British acts.
It was the last night that New York's Luke Temple, along with his keyboardist / percussionist Austin Vaughn, would open up the shows for Blonde Redhead.
From what I've gathered from their 40-min set, Temple's music is much more serious than compared to his previous band Here We Go Magic. Temple sings about complicated men from the '40s, about the depression, about a poor adopted quiet girl called Mary Ann (based on a true story), etc.
I suspect that some of the live songs were from his ironically named Good Mood Fool, which is out now on Secretly Canadian.
It has been a while, but NYC's Blonde Redhead is back in the Twin Cities. The dreampop/ethereal pop/shoegazing trio constists of Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace. Kazu and Simone traded vocals per songs, back and forth, and they seem to know their set very well (possibly playing the same set every night).
As you can see from their setlist, the majority of it is from the new Barragán album, including the title track, "Lady M", "Mine to Be Had",
"No More Honey", "Dripping", "The One I Love", and "Defeatist Anthem (Harry and I)".
Almost every song had Kazu behind the keyboard or shyly playing the guitar in the background (usually shrouded in darkness) ... all except for their final song, "23", which Kazu stepped out front and center in the middle of the stage while confetti fell from the Varsity's ceiling. "23" is my favorite Blonde Redhead song, and to see it end in such a fashion, was very satisfying.
