British singer Paloma Faith's very first Minneapolis appearance just took place at the Triple Rock Social Club last night. This is part of her eight US dates in support of her third studio album, A Perfect Contradiction.
Opener Marques Toliver had canceled his appearance last minute due to illness, so Faith's live show started slightly earlier than originally scheduled. However, surprisingly, the audience showed up quite early and quickly filled up the main floor. I got to talk to some of them coming through the door, and they all expressed how lucky we are to get Paloma Faith in this intimate environment. One guy was amazed that he could get a ticket at the door, and was more than happy to hand over the cash.
The show started at 8:30, at first with backing band taking the stage, playing the intro to "Mouth to Mouth" as Paloma Faith took the stage last to reveal her outfit for this year. The Spanish or Brazilian dress was colorful and festive, and I'm not going to lie, reminded me of the Chiquita Banana woman, but minus the outrageous fruit headwear. Faith commented on her dress, saying that she would normally dance more, but she "cannot breathe" in the outfit. "This fabric does not respond well to cleaning," Faith said, "It's not because we're eating American food!"
I love it that Faith talked a lot on stage, she even scheduled her chat time on her setlist (see photo). Personally, I like it when singers talk on stage, especially if they tell some interesting stories. I felt like she was really down the earth, hearing her thoughts on things. For example, she's not going to sugarcoat why she doesn't tour America all that often - it's expensive to bring her here, and the label won't put up the money unless the album sells really well in the States.
She then commented on what is selling in America, "I'm sorry, but your top ten sucks!" She's referring to all the "big bum" songs in the charts. Still, she has 'faith' in the market and said, "You know Morrissey, right? Morrissey said never underestimate your audience."
My favorite Faith story is about how the song "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" came about. About a year and a half ago, she was talking to her manager and he said a lady wrote a song for her. Faith didn't want to sing other people's songs, then she heard that it was written by Diane Warren. When she finally got around to googling her name, she discovered that Warren had written hits for all the great artists, from Cher to Toni Braxton to Céline Dion.
Although impressed, she still did not want to do the song, mostly because songs by other people didn't suit her. Faith decided to meet Warren face to face for lunch and let her down gently. Apparently, "every third word [out of Warren] was c***." After turning her down, Warren pretty much called Faith an a*****.
You would think that would be the end of that, but Warren called Faith on the phone on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) and played the song over the phone. The song was perfect, and Faith finally agreed to record it.
When "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" hit #1 in the Australian chart, she received a gift from Warren - a gold bracelet with an inscription that reads, "#1 C****."
Not a surprise, but Paloma Faith played every song off her album A Perfect Contradiction, with the exception of "Other Woman".
Rounding out the rest of her set were two songs ("Just Be" and "Picking Up the Pieces") from her certified double-platinum album Fall to Grace and a Van Morrison cover, "Crazy Love".
We got word from one of her musician was that A Perfect Contradiction will be released in America by Sony Music soon, and will include some bonus tracks (possibly the same version as the forthcoming A Perfect Contradiction: Outsiders' Edition version in the UK). Hopefully the album will do well in the States and will help bring Paloma Faith back to Minneapolis!
