Seattle's Minus the Bear is currently on tour in support of their latest Lost Loves (Dangerbird Records), a compilation of rare and unreleased tracks.
The band sold out their appearance at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis last night.
Louisville's Young Widows opened up the show, playing tracks from their latest Easy Pain (Temporary Residence). The band played without the venue's light, instead choosing setup their own light setup (with plenty of backlight and one lone spotlight on the singer). From what I've heard of the band's music, it sounds like to metal/hardcore.
Minus the Bear is a bit of a supergroup, featuring various band members of Botch, Kill Sadie and Sharks Keep Moving, and other side projects. If you follow Seattle's music scene, you've probably heard of Minus the Bear and their almost cult-like status. Although their albums broke in the Billboard 200 and they consistently sell out 1000 cap venues, the band remained relatively independent... and that's just how their fans would like it.
In addition to latest Lost Loves compilation, this was a tour was also for the ten year anniversary of their third EP They Make Beer Commercials Like This, which originally came out in 2004 (but re-released in 2008 by Suicide Squeeze Records).
Naturally with the 10th year anniversary of They Make Beer Commercials Like This, the first section of their set was devoted to the entire EP, which they played from start to finish ("Fine + 2 Pts", "Let's Play Clowns", "Dog Park", "I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien", "Hey! Is That A Ninja Up There?", and"Pony Up!")... But wait, if you were wondering what happened to "Houston, We Have Uh-Oh" (which was the extra track on the 2008 reissue) - yes, that was taken care of in the encore.
The rest of their set were various classic tracks from the band's back catalogue, with plenty of hits, including "Dr. L'Ling" and "Knights", which got some of the loudest cheer from the audience.
If you ever wanted to hear They Make Beer Commercials Like This live, you definitely need to catch Minus the Bear on this tour. Young Widows' last date with the band will be in Des Moines, which Minus the Bear's singer Jake Snider commented that they will surely be missed.
