New Zealander Kimbra just played the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis last night.

Empress Of

Lorely Rodriguez, otherwise known as Empress Of, was just in Minneapolis a few weeks ago opening up for Jungle. She seemed quite at home on stage, singing and dancing... that is until she started to speak and introduce the band (which I thought I heard was Spencer on keys and Michel on drums). She sounded nervous, but perhaps overwhelmed at the large early turnout.

I got the sense that her songs were deeply personal to her, as she sings about not wanting to feel alone, yearning for love, and forgetting the painful past. She did a couple of songs from her Systems EP (Terrible Records), including "No Means No".

Most people probably heard of Kimbra on Gotye's breakthrough hit duet song "Somebody That I Used To Know" (which she and Gotye won Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo on the Grammy Awards... which was an achieve as she's only the third New Zealander to win a Grammy). But to be fair, Kimbra's been paying her dues with her debut Vows in 2011, but with the Gotye song, it certainly help bring attention to this truly unique artist.

I believe the first time Kimbra was here in Minnesota, it was as opener to Gotye in 2012, but since then, she's been back in Minneapolis as headliner, selling out the Varsity Theater in October 2012. Many of those fans who attended the Varsity show are back to see Kimbra at the Fine Line Music Café last night, lining up at the venue, before the doors were opened. It is always a good indication of how dedicated the fanbase is, especially for such a chilly Minnesota night.

Kimbra, in her typical theatric flair, she came out in a reversal shag coat, singing "Teen Heat"... but then quickly shed it to reveal a custom metallic shiny skirt! Almost everyone with a camera phone raised it up to snap a photo. You can tell Kimbra loved it and played it up, dancing and singing her heart out.

Half of the set was dedicated to her new album The Golden Echo, which came out in August via Warner Bros. From hearing the new songs live, they sounded really fun live, particularly the set closer "Miracle", which Kimbra described the song as "a song about gratitude and celebration".

During one of her scheduled 'talk' time, Kimbra mentioned how she felt 'connected' to Minneapolis, "the home of funk soul" (referring to, but not naming, Prince). Obviously Gotye and Kimbra are massively influenced by the Purple One, having acknowledged this previously during the Grammy Awards and also in various magazine interviews.

Setlist

The setlists were not given to the fans by her roadies, but as photo evidence here, we can show you that Kimbra did scheduled in some reminders, like thanking Empress Of ... but the oddest thing on her list at the very end was "Never Gonna Give You Up", which is a Rick Astley song. Since the text is in red, we can speculate that perhaps the song was optional.

I've only run into a few rare cases where setlists were not given to fans in the front, it is usually because the artist requests this for whatever reason, or they plan on reusing it for tomorrow night, or if the artist want to save it for themselves (a few musicians keep a tour diary for themselves). There is a strong case for the second option since there is no clear indication of "Fine Line" listed anywhere on the set, they were likely just going to reuse it for Chicago's show.

Kimbra and Empress Of are wrapping up their US tour, stopping in Chicago on November 1st, and ending the tour in Allston on November 9th. All limited VIP packages (which includes meet & greet and photo op) for Kimbra are sold out.

Danish singer/pianist Agnes Obel just kicked off her North American tour in Minneapolis at the Dakota Jazz Club.

Toronto's Jennifer Castle decorated the stage with flowers that she found along the long road to Minneapolis. She joking offered to sell the flowers too, along with her entire discography for sale at the merch table.

She started and ended her set with covers, starting with Bob Dylan's "Walkin' Down the Line" and ending with a traditional song "Sailor's Blessing", which she sang a cappella. Sandwiched between were mostly selections from her latest album Pink City, which came out last month on Idée Fixe Records.

For the first night of the North American tour, things seemed to get off to a good start. Agnes Obel affectionately called her landing in the US on a very late flight, "fresh off the boat".

If you are not familiar with Obel, her debut album Philharmonics (PIAS Recordings) sold so well it was certified platinum. The album took home several Danish Music Awards: Best Album Of The Year, Best Pop Release Of The Year, Best Debut Artist Of The Year, Best Female Artist Of The Year and Best Songwriter Of The Year.

So there was a lot of anticipation for her follow-up, Aventine, which actually beat or met chart positions in the UK, and, even landed #1 in Denmark. Aventine, as Obel explained on stage, was a much more personal record for Obel.

We previously wrote that her music is dark, but I should point out that she enjoys playing literally in the dark. This probably has something to do with staging and the lack of available proper lighting... but both Obel and her violinist, Mika Posen, were in darkness. Poor cellist Anne Müller, who sat right in the center of the spotlight...

Setlist

As you can see from the setlist, the majority of the live songs were taken from the sophomore album Aventine, including the title track and "Run Cried the Crawling". Between her two albums (and currently writing new songs), she certainly had enough material to fill a set... but her love and affection for other artists had her covering Elliot Smith's "Between the Bars" and John Cale's "Close Watch" (which actually appeared on her debut Philharmonics album).

Also, according to Obel, she's from Denmark, but living in Germany. Obel noted that when she moved to another country, she realized how alien and different other cultures are... and that's what "Dorian" was about.

Obel's been busy writing new songs, and she previewed "Spinet Song" for us. This song was a result of her working with other type of keyboards, like the spinet, which is a smaller piano.

Although this was Obel's very first time in Minneapolis, based on the turnout and dedicated fans, this appearance certainly will not be the last. Agnes Obel and Jennifer Castle continues their North American tour through November:

If you love rockabilly, The Brian Setzer Orchestra is back in town to rock it inside out... Brian Setzer does not need an introduction. I grew up listening the Stray Cats' hits "Stray Cat Strut", "(She's) Sexy + 17", and "Rock This Town", so I love Setzer.

Opener Los Angeles' The Record Company band is described by the Time Out LA as if "John Lee Hooker and The Stooges had a love-child", which to say is blues and rock fusion music. Look for the band to play some tracks from their Superdead debut EP, as well as recent cuts like "Rita Mae Young", on this 2014 tour.

Bear's Den just played the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis last night. It was a great turnout, surprising even the band.

Christof

Holland's Christof was the first musician on stage, of course, asked if there were any Dutch people in the audience. The first three songs on his set were "Cuckoo", "Honey Tears", and "Love's Glory". The rest of his set were newer songs, typical of developing artists, he's constantly writing new songs.

Highlight of his show was when he was peer pressured into letting down his hair, and also a cover of a traditional American folk song, "Silver Dagger".

Dan Mangan + Blacksmith

From Vancouver "the most cities", Dan Mangan + Blacksmith are normally a larger band, but for this tour, their guitarist Gordon just had a baby, so they are a stripped down three-piece for this tour. They announced that their last Minneapolis appearance was with The Rural Alberta Advantage, which I immediately thought was last week, but they were referencing October 30, 2012.

They played some tracks from their 2011 Arts & Crafts album Oh Fortune (including "Leaves, Trees, Forest" and "Rows Of Houses"). Most of their live music featured a trumpeter, except for some rare exceptions when the band stepped off the stage for Mangan to play "Basket" solo.

They ended their set with "Vessel", which is taken from their forthcoming 2015 Club Meds album.

London-based band Bear's Den have been building up a fanbase in the area, having played in the Twin Cities at least three previous times (supporting Mumford & Sons at Xcel in 2013, headlining at Turf Club in March 2014, and Triple Rock in August 2014)... so the band enjoy coming through town.

Andrew Davie

In fact, as singer Andrew Davie was about to say, "I don't want to compare and favor some cities over..." and before he finished, the audience shouted out, Minneapolis. "You said it, not me!," Davie said. Then jokingly, "You guys sucked!" It's clear that Bear's Den are having a wonderful time building friendship and bonding with their fans, new and old.

They spent their time in the green room at the Fine Line watching music videos by Shania Twain, and Davie said, "It felt good." Twain became a running joke throughout their show, as Davie started singing lyrics to "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" right before "Stubborn Beast". Then when they announced they were going to play a cover, the audience immediately snapped back, "Shania Twain!" ... which sadly, they were unprepared for. Instead, we're given a great cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark".

Bear's Den basically played almost every songs known to them, including every song from their debut album Islands, which landed October 20, 2014, on Communion Records. Even towards the end of their set, the band teased, "Yep, that's the very last song we will play. There's absolutely no way we're playing another song..."

Of course, they came back for the two-song encore: starting with "Don't Let The Sun Steal You Away" played in the audience with three acoustic guitars, and then "Agape" on the traditional stage.

If you enjoy folk rock music in the style of Mumford & Sons or Noah and the Whale, you might want to check out Bear's Den. Their music, some electric, some acoustic folk, have a tendency to build up to an explosive satisfying ending.

On a beautiful Monday evening in New Orleans, I made my way to the newly renovated Saenger Theatre to see Mr. Ray LaMontagne with The Belle Brigade.

The Saenger Theatre was built all the way back in 1927. The Saenger had been closed since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and reopened in 2013. Recently, the Saenger has hosted some major musician acts such as Dave Matthews and David Gray and still screens films and hosts Broadway Theater shows.

Opening the night was a band called The Belle Brigade. Dueling female vocals on the drums and male vocals on lead guitar from siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska, compliment this awesome four piece folk rock band. I loved the drummer's final track, "When Everything Was What It Was" from their new album Just Because (ATO Records), watching her bang the drums with her hair flying all over the a classic rock band like it was from the 80s.

Headliner Ray LaMontagne performed an elegant two hour set. Ray has a distinct look with his top gay and mountain man beard. His confidence on stage was mesmerizing along with the psychedelic animation video in the backdrop during the set.

His recently released album Supernova (RCA) got plenty of playback, as expected. "Julia", "Supernova", "Airwaves", "She's the One" were all highlights of the night, and are some of the many hits off the new record. Ray of course also played monster hits "Jolene" and "You are the Best Thing". I was having too much fun!

LaMontagne is a true talent and I put him in the elite group of the likes of Dave Mathews, Jack Johnson, John legend, you name it it, the man can do it all. He's got soul, country, blues, and one if the best voices in the world. Ray is complimented by a phenomenal band with two other guitarists and a cello/bassist that was rocking out hard! Seeing him with the full band was quite the treat and I would also love to see him perform an acoustic set.

Be sure to catch this man on tour if you have the opportunity.

CONSTANTINE

Of all the comic book-related television shows that I follow, I'm most excited about Constantine. I know the source material very well, having own nearly all the 300 issues run of Hellblazer comic book. My favorite stories are the ones by Garth Ennis, who I thought brought a much better pace (and violent) to the horror comic book. Jamie Delano is a good writer, but his stories takes so long to build up... and they really feel very British to me.

So the new live action Constantine show just aired on NBC and I have to admit, they got the character right: a blond British guy in a trench coat with his cab driver friend Chas. I am one of the few people that actually like the Constantine movie, even though they got the character wrong... but if you've seen the movie, then you're probably already familiar with the TV show.

I'm probably just nitpicky, but the Astra little girl character in the comic book is white, and she's missing an arm. They reference the 'Newcastle' storyline in the show, but they gloss it over and didn't mention the child molestation thing that caused the demon to manifest in the first place.

Constantine is sometime not a very likeable character, especially when he sacrifices his friends like pawns.

Some things:

Constantine is a chain smoker... which lead to a great storyline about how he got lung cancer (and how he tricked to get a healthy set of lungs!). In the TV show, he's not smoking (or perhaps gave up smoking).

Astra is missing an arm in the comic book, thanks (or no thanks) to John Constantine.

Dr Fate's helmet is shown in the show, let's just keep Constantine away from other DC 'superhero' characters. I never want to see Constantine hanging out with Batman (which he does in the new 52 and that's why Justice League Dark sucks...) The only exception is Swamp Thing, otherwise all DC characters in tights should not be in this Constantine world.

While Ritchie (the computer hacker) is a Constantine friend from Hellblazer #7, I do not believe Liv and her father Jasper actually appeared in the comic book. Let's hope to see Map brought to life.

I just read that the pilot received poor rating and that the show will likely be cancel. I hope not, I want to see more Constantine!

THE FLASH cwtv.com/shows/the-flash With the success of Arrow (based on the Green Arrow comic book), the CW developed The Flash. Some minor complaints: Like Arrow, this show suffers from "the CW" style: the over dramatic acting, the love drama, etc. I find it hard to believe the entire S.T.A.R. Labs is run by a guy in a wheelchair and two high school drop smarties? Flash's 'Rogues Gallery' is stupid. I mean, Mirror Master and Captain Boomerang? Lame, right?

GOTHAM fox.com/gotham So, this is the non-Batman Batman show, Gotham. I'm not sure how I feel about this series ... I wish this show to be is a crime drama, you know, like a 'Detective Comic' show? Some minor complaints: There's no Batman. Some of the Batman villains are here: Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin), Edward Nygma (Riddler), Selina Kyle (Catwoman) ... but do we really care about these people (especially because we know how they end up?)

Nashville based recording artist Alice Peacock will be in Minneapolis at the Dakota Jazz Club on November 2nd. We caught her show in 2010 and noted that it felt like a comfortable house show, full of friends of family... possibly due to her strong ties with Minnesota, because she grew up in White Bear Lake in Minnesota.

I've said it before, but I had a blast at Quintron and Miss Pussycat in 2010 at the Triple Rock Social Club. We tried to cover their show last year, but unfortunately it didn't happen (we saw another animal band, Noah and the Whale at the Varsity Theater on October 8, 2013 instead).

So, anyway, after three years of random singles and a Grammy nomination for songwriting ("Chatterbox" 2012), Quintron's debut LP Spellcaster II: Death In Space is out today (October 28th).
