Raz Simone brought a Friday-night energy to The Pourhouse last Wednesday night with an amazing, non-stop, high-energy performance. Leading up to the concert I was busy becoming acquainted with Raz’s music through his website and himself thanks to an interview he granted me.
During the interview Raz admitted that his new album, Cognitive Dissonance, is a little on the dark side but that he’s gotten feedback from his fans that his music is like a light in the darkness. I couldn’t agree with his fans more.
In person, Raz outshines his “8 Rangs” by constantly moving through and speaking with the audience. So it was very apropos that Raz opened up with “8 Rangs.” At the end of the song he jumped into the audience where he stayed to perform one of two songs from his debut album Solomon Samuel Simone.
Raz continued to chill in the audience with perhaps the most chill song in his new project: “Still Mobbin.” By the end of the song, Raz cleared a runway to the stage in which he sprinted down then leapt over the barricades and onto the stage. Raz had the audience in his hand at this point.
Raz’s next performed “Thirsty,” which his DJ, Jay, started off by squirting water into the audience while Raz jumped into the crowd for a second time. Raz hit the upper deck of The Pourhouse during his next song “Hometown.”
Next came the most emotional song on his set. Raz performed “They’ll Speak” in Acapella despite his voice a bit on the raspy side. As he moved around the floor with the audience circled around him, some ice fell from the upper deck onto Raz. He didn’t even flinch. Raz kept right on with the performance and that’s when I knew that he’s someone to watch for. He’s all about his music. Even though he wears 8 gold rings he also wears an old Seattle Mariners baseball hat with a big salt stain.
Raz ended with “Cold” from his Solomon Samuel Simone album. Raz’s best quality is his ability to elicit empathy. The crowd was under his control the entire time as he captivated them with his lyrics, enthusiasm, and showmanship. I highly recommend everyone go check out his music and tour dates on his website.
