Seeing The Both at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis was like 70% music and 30% improv comedy. If you are not caught up, The Both is the latest musical project from Aimee Mann and Ted Leo, from 'Til Tuesday and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, respectively.
Opening up the nearly sold out show was Nick Diamonds, from Islands, who played a brief 40 min set, seated. Highlight of his show was his set finale, a cover of Sinead O'Connor's "Red Football," which he described as "happy clams playing an angry song." The cover is a fitting end to the last date of the tour, especially because today (Sunday, May 11th) is Mother's Day, and I've previously mentioned that Universal Mother (which "Red Football" appeared on) was all about mothers.
The Both (with drummer Matt Mayhall) came on stage to a very full room. Aimee Mann even remarked that she was afraid people were barely standing inside the venue, with fans standing almost outside the exit door near the front of the stage.
Typical with bands with only one album, The Both basically played every songs they've ever written from their self-titled debut album (out now on SuperEgo Records). Making up the rest of their set were extra-long stage banters and selective songs from their past bands, such as Ted Leo & The Pharmacists' "Bottled In Cork" and 'Til Tuesday's famous song "Voices Carry."
As for the banters, they talked about Leo's Knudsen cranberry juice, about Paul Stanley (KISS), Jeb Bush, "New P**** Rules", and their tribute song ("Bedtime Stories") to Scott Miller of Game Theory, who passed away last year. The latter was an important song to the duo, because Miller was the person that introduced 'the both' of them.
