Queens of the Stone Age is currently on tour with Chelsea Wolfe, both stopping by Roy Wilkins Auditorium in Saint Paul last night, May 6th.
The thing you have to understand about these Xcel Energy Center shows (the Roy Wilkins is the venue within the massive stadium - for Minneapolis natives, it is like 7th Street to First Avenue) is that they are notorious for starting on time and keeping to their schedule.
So starting sharply at 7:30pm was Chelsea Wolfe. Wolfe's band played in complete darkness for about half a minute before Wolfe made her grand entrance.
Wolfe played some song from her latest release Pain is Beauty (Sargent Records), such as "Feral Love" and "We Hit a Wall." Hearing the eight songs on her brief set (including a cover of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog"), you hear a range of influences in her music: from punk to gothic to drone to industrial to metal.
About forty minutes later, in typical Wolfe fashion, exit stage left in darkness, leaving her band to jam on.
Like Chelsea Wolfe's variety of music style, Queens of the Stone Age also went through many musical changes, thanks mostly to their many, many contributors throughout the years (so many musicians involved, it actually has its own mini-section on Wikipedia). In many ways, Queens of the Stone Age is a supergroup republic, currently lead by Josh Homme.
Although the band haven't been active since 2007's Era Vulgaris, mostly due to Homme putting Queens on hiatus while he created Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones, and then a few years ago, nearly died due to a knee surgery. But a few years ago, Homme came back to his Queens of the Stone Age project, working on 2013's ...Like Clockwork. The long break was good for him, because these new songs sound fantastic, particularly the loud drumming that started off "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, but I Feel Like a Millionaire."
Of course they didn't play just the new songs, but mixing in old hits like "No One Knows" and "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" (for the encore).
