Synopsis
The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again… and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

I just saw Edge of Tomorrow, the upcoming film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and it's really good.
The movie is actually based on a Japanese book called All You Need Is Kill (オール ユー ニード イズ キル), written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka with illustrations by Yoshitoshi ABe. The book was turned into a manga by Ryōsuke Takeuchi and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, and now a U.S.-production movie called Edge of Tomorrow. I understand why the studio decided to change the name, but personally, I would've been more excited to see a movie called All You Need Is Kill (that just sounds so cool.)
The story follow Major William Cage (Cruise), a coward forced to partake in the United Defense Force against an alien force that had taken a section of Europe. He's killed right away, but then found himself repeating that day over again. Through mistakes and repetition, Cage would become an amazing ground soldier and soon teams up with Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt) to learn how to ultimately defeat the enemy.
The mecha/exoskeleton suits used in the movie looked really cool, and the mecha reminded me of Warhammer 40,000, a little Starcraft and little Matrix and even Aliens (mostly for the Space Marines.) While the tech looks incredibly cool, I found the aliens 'Mimicks' not that interesting. They're all CG and they are constantly moving so fast that it's all a blur most of the time. I just had a hard time believe that they are dangerous because they are moving too fast? I don't know, perhaps when it comes out on Bluray will I get a chance to slow down the action.
Anyway, we've seen the time-loop concept before, particularly with Groundhog Day and Run Lola Run, and in these time-loop stories, it's really hard to keep showing the audience the same scene over and over again. Fortunately, director Doug Liman found a way to make each repeated day really fun and entertaining.
As for the soundtrack, it's mostly orchestral, but when the end credits started to roll, it's John Newman's 'Love Me Again' song triumphantly blasting over the cinema's speakers.
Warner Brothers' film Edge of Tomorrow is rated PG-13 and is available in 3D. The movie comes out in theaters on Friday, June 6th, 2014.
