As part of their tenth anniversary as a band, Who's Bad, the Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band, stopped by Minneapolis' Mill City Nights on Saturday, April 19th. You have to keep in mind that it wasn't just seeing a live cover band, but it was more like a celebration of all-things Michael Jackson and his music.
Their sold out show started with local DJ Ben Michaels (who played various mashup 80s and 90s songs) and opener Ladyboi. The thing to note about this band, besides from the cross-dressing/high-heels wearing singer, is that their drummer is Michael Bland, from Prince's New Power Generation.
Ladyboi kicked off their set with "Don't Go Tellin' On Me", which is a great song, however the highlight of their show was probably their cover of Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me." When they started playing that song, it suddenly dawn on me that obviously Boy George was an influence on Ladyboi's style and music.
Who's Bad took the stage after we watched a brief video of various Michael Jackson footage, particularly the mad fan frenzy from Japan and fans rushing the stage to get as close as possible to the King of Pop.
They are such a dedicated tribute band, that they feature two Michael Jackson (from Billie Jean-era and modern Jackson), sung by Joseph Bell and Taalib York. As soon as they started dancing, especially the infamous moonwalk, you can tell that the band's been studying and analyzing all of Jackson's moves for the past decade. They've perfected it, and every time you saw a sweet move, the audience goes nuts. Even if it wasn't the real Michael Jackson, it sure felt like it.
As you can see from the clip of "The Way You Make Me Feel" on the Who's Bad Interview, everybody was smiling and singing and having a great time dancing on (and off) stage.
That's not all, the band didn't just do Michael Jackson covers, but in the middle of their set, they did a medley of Jackson Five songs, including "ABC" and "Stop! The Love You Save", for fans of the Motown-era Jackson.
It's only near the end of their hour and a half show that they started doing all the massive hits, ending on such a high note: "Billie Jean", "Beat It", "Thriller", and their signature song, "Bad". Every song was an instant sing-along, it was pretty amazing.
The hits continued with their encore, which included my favorite "Man in the Mirror" and "Black or White". After the latter song was played, both Joseph and Taalib came on stage for a final appearance.
Who's Bad are currently on their 10th Anniversary tour, be sure to catch this band and 'just enjoy yourself and let the madness in the music get to you.'
PS, as a special bonus, everyone that attended the show received a special poster of Who's Bad at Mill City Nights.
